      Yes. The exact opposite of what we've got now: entire grievance groups and/or a generation of narcissistic people who believe society OWES them and they have no responsibility at all to anyone else. We had this conversation when Riley Strain disappeared in Nashville and people were asking why his frat brothers didn't stick with him when he was kicked out of that bar. Not even one friend went with him. The response of us older ones thought it was shameful there was no buddy system in place. The response of the younger people asserted they are going out to have a good time... not to be somebody's babysitter! I'm like..... ummmm, can't you do both? Balance is the key. Enjoy yourself, look out for yourself, but watch out for each other, too.

    So what do we call Ayn Rand herself? Clearly she is not selfish by the traditional definition. I guess from what I've heard from her talk on love, she would say she is indeed selfish, because making the world a better place for others makes her happy? Btw I find it interesting that her idea of selfishness is actually similar to what many Buddhists preach, they say something like "in order to best help others, you first have to help yourself and achieve happiness, happy people become good people".

    All human beings, indeed all living things, survive through a combination of competition and cooperation. Wolves hunt in packs, but the biggest wolf eats first. People compete with each other for property and resources, but cooperate to protect their communities.
    This paradox of competition / cooperation is fundamental to life. In my view, altruism is basically an attitude of prioritizing cooperation. Rand's ideology prioritizes competition.

I do believe in altruism in order to have a whole life but it requires that everyone pour into everyone's cup and that's just not going to happen. @@trolli101 Perhaps one is mixing anthropology (materialism, biological) with psychology by juxtaposing them; men are born evil and selfish in nature is self evident without the artificial "education" of actuality (reasoning). To say is not genuine I completely disagree, psychology doesn't follow conditions nor propositions of validity but only contradictions. Altruism is conceptual a understanding of actuality (Education understanding the parts). Even though my inner feelings are saying is not beneficial to me, reason is telling me is for the greater good through the artificial social construct such as "education understanding the whys and parts." Character is a social construct and yes altruism is also artificial and social construct so is self interests but not selfishness.

    • @johnnynick3621

      No Crypto.... altruism NEVER brings happiness. Being KIND can bring happiness. Being generous can bring happiness. Caring for those you deem worthy certainly brings one happiness.
      But none of those things are part of altruism.
      Altruism requires that you put the lives of ALL OTHERS before your own life.
      Putting the lives of YOUR children before your own is NOT altruism.... it is selfish, and it is natural.
      Helping a neighbor or friend that you like to pay their bills is NOT altruism. If you like them, you did it for selfish, natural reasons.
      Altruism REQUIRES that you get NOTHING from the transaction. No sense of joy, no accolades from others, no pride.... NOTHING.
      Altruism is helping those you despise.... because then you get NOTHING in return.
      Making a charitable donation to the World Federation of Nazi Pedophiles might qualify as altruism.... assuming you despise Nazi pedophiles.

    • @cryptocoin5318
      @cryptocoin5318 Месяц назад

      @@johnnynick3621 Again, anything under human psychology is "contradictory" [distribution] and not propositional [analytic definition] meaning "happiness" under psychology is "subjective" and "temporal" as well as having good reasoning behind the intent (happiness). There is also a fine line between foolishness and prudence by helping neighbors pay their bills, of course, depending on the circumstances and context but regardless that is being "charitable" not altruistic at all and that discussion has to do more with "Character" not altruism at all. Altruism is the "bigger picture" is big not two people or 3 is an institution, society, or the planet or the cause (Big) for the greater good. Now to address your point, does altruism bring happiness? Yes under Human psychology meaning not to you but yes to many. "happiness is one's own imagination" THE SKY'S THE LIMIT.
