Leica T (Type 701) Hands-On Field Test

- It's not often that Leica introduces a new camera system, so we were excited to check out the first camera in the new Leica T series. It's expensive, has a unique uni-body design and a very clever touch screen interface. Is that enough for it to compete with the amazing mirrorless cameras recently released? TCSTV's Chris Niccolls takes a look.

The price of this camera is just off the charts insane. In US $, the body is $1850, the 18-56 lens is $1750, the 23mm is $1950, the viewfinder is $595, the T-mount adapter is $395, and extra batteries are $140 each. I know Leica is a luxury brand but this is beyond ridiculous.
Great review as usual though :-)
Chris, I'm a huge fan of your shots in these reviews here. I've found them to really inspire me when I'm out shooting, they have this look to them that makes you remember them. Your way of seeing patterns and interesting formations is fascinating!
That was probably the funniest and most entertaining review you guys have done to date, loved it!
The best honest review so far .👍
Love your honesty about the product thanks
I love your reviews. Very relaxing and informative.
Brilliant review as always :)
Wow he’s so handsome!
my fav camera review channel !
Excellent review Chris.
" What a fashion accessory " 👏👏👏 you sum up the Leica T so very aptly.
Great review as always!
What lens did you use with your GH4 for filming?
Snow in May? Wow, we thought we had it bad! Liking the chilled music at the end guys! The Camera Store
You do such great reviews and articles.
Wow great review
Finally some competition to Hasselblad Lunar :)
That is a strange was to spell Sony NEX-7.
Finally someone has put the extensive usability knowledge from the smartphone industry into a camera. Surprisingly it's not Sony.
Does the screen accept two-finger gestures for zoom-in and out?
Thx for the review.
"Theres a lot to be said for love"
Class review from the tube's best (with Kai of course)
The detail from that GH4 is just astonishing and shadow detail is great, absolutely loving it. As for the Leica, mmmm its something that I think is better sitting on a desk to admire rather than being used as a camera, thats just me though :)
Enjoyed your 6 years' old review. Thank You. I enjoy shooting with my Leica TL2, SL and both film and digital M just as much as my Rolleiflex 2.8f and Zorki-4K. They are not tools of my trade (for that I have my Nikon D850 and D4s). They are TOYS which give people pleasure and enjoyment. What is a "value for money" toy? Guess we have to ask ourselves another question first "What value are you looking for?" For example, an OO guage model railway set can cost as much as a Leica Noctilux M 50mm f0.95 or a ticket on the Seven Stars Kyushu Train in Japan. Perhaps we should classify Leica as an Adult Toys manufacturer but not of the silicone kind.
great and honest review!
Great point about "loving the camera" despite its flaws. If you enjoy using a camera you tend to use it more. Not for me, I think, but good point nevertheless. Great review, as always. Thank you guys!
love it or hate it, i like your presentation that you speak with so much love ahha
The first camera with L mount. The entrance of Leica to the mirrorless revolution. Of course many believe that the digital Leica M mount rangefinder cameras are mirrorless but frankly they are not.
The mount was originally named T mount. Afterwards as TL mount for aps-c lenses and finally L mount.
Leica isn't very focused on the introduction of new L mount (T or TL mount) lenses anymore. Leica is interested more in full frame L mount lenses. The L mount alliance of Leica, Panasonic and Sigma is about full frame L mount lenses and cameras. Nevertheless a Sigma autofocus full frame L mount lens can work with autofocus on the APS-C Leica T mount camera without any adapter.
Keep in mind that L mount alliance permits differences with autofocus technology from each manufacturer but there are some basic common specifications for compatibility reasons.
good review. like always
great reviews!
A great review, explaining the virtues and the flaws of the camera. I come away from all your reviews well-informed and knowledgeable about the camera being reviewed. Well done.
Think I'll stick with my M3... Great review!
Good and honest review. But something tells me there's a problem with the audio of this vid, was it not in sync with the video?
"...there's a lot to be said for Love."
Nice to see an unbiased review. ehm ehm ... Steve Huff
I wish I could give two thumbs for the sole fact that he mentioned Manowar!
Nice review guys as usual.
Where is Jordan? Still obsessed with the GH4?
Filming this episode. With his sweet, sweet GH4.

You do nice reviews) How about Leica X, SL?
Yei! Colombia!!
which camera did you shoot this video with?
I really liked seeing how Chris Niccolls struggles with the Leica T. His head is telling him one thing and his heart is telling him another. For me, no built-in viewfinder is a no go. I am hoping that Leica will build upon the foundation of the T in their next camera and fix its weaknesses. I don't see Canon or Nikon making an interface like this anytime soon. Leica has an opportunity to truly innovate. Let's see if they run with it.
Is the price difference worth it for the GRii I use? Or maybe the GRiii? Thank you!
What is the filter size for the kit lens?
I say Bon Voyage Chris, don`t forget your main man Jordan.
PS- The Port tour in Porto is a killer on the liver.
Chris, EIZO is the monitor company. FYI.
OMG Jordan looks so young
well for 3rd party straps you can either make your own hooks to fit into the camera or take the original strap and cut off the strap and cut out a hole in the hooks to add any 3rd party straps..
I just don't understand why anyone would spend that kind of money for a sub-par camera. I could buy a REALLY great mirrorless AND a couple of super lenses or I could buy a mid-range DSLR, for that same price. I would also get a camera that would be useable in nearly all situations and provide decent video too.
I guess those Leica badges are REALLY expensive to make. ;)
The video that the GH4 puts out is simply phenomenal. I watched it in 4K (after waiting forever for it to finish queueing) and I don't think I've ever seen detail like that, not even on a TV from "professional" shows. The tree at the beginning of the video was tack sharp, it looked photographic-sharp, not that general-blah-sorta-sharpness that video usually provides. I think I have found my next camera (not the Leica, sorry, but the GH4). I wish my monitor had FULL 4K, it only does 2880x1800, but it's still such a massive improvement over any of the HD or 1440p stuff I've seen. Great job, guys, as always.
leica isn't for people like you, cause you don't get it.
sultanabran1 Obviously. :)
I wouldn't buy an overpriced, underperforming camera because I don't have virtually unlimited money. If I had money to burn, I would probably own a few leicas, especially a couple of the old black and white models, or the newer "Monochrom". Having a camera that was designed from the ground-up to shoot black and white would be amazing, as a lot of my pictures end up in B&W.
Same people who would spent 8000 dollar on a wedding photographer or hundreds of dollars on a photo print.
Did u also reviewed TL2 ?
great review. that camera looks like some clunky funky bullshit to me.
lol at the tagging at 6:01.
that being said. :). i love that
2160p! :D
Is that a 1" scratch in the upper left corner of the screen, or is it a screen protector bubble? I worry about the scratch resistance of the big back screen.
Screen protector. You can see it peeled back when we show the menu screen close-up.
If you look around enough, you can get this for £1,300. With the lens!
So, basically a ridiculously overpriced Canon EOS M, albeit in a super sexy body. And without IS on any of the lenses. I do love the app aspect of the touch menu, though.
dont worry buddy this camera 4 years later is worth 400 dollars now so its very affordable
You forgot built by hand by someone paid a salary in Germany
@@mikeyestrada1674 i dont think so. let check the price of M8 after 16 years !!! still ridiculous price !
"Having said that..." Chris..."having said that" :)
Don't worry. I still say "that being said" all the time too lol
You took two pro cams to the consulate and weren't harassed for "terrorism"? I'm moving to Canada.
shot on the GH4?
Yes, and I loved using it! We'll be using it on a lot of future episodes!
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Does it have a crack on the screen @3:11
I like thw Leica
Does Chris listen to Moonsorrow? If so, I have gained so much respect for you.
Haha, I actually yelled out "hell yeah" when he said that!
It is a luxory gadget. I'm into industrial design and I say also it's pricing is normal for this industrial design.
I love how you say industrial design like we said that there was a little bit of gold in sneakers when we were growing up.
I know it's a new system, but why couldn't they just keep the same mount? Wouldn't it be logical to do so?
Leica T.....
For the super rich non photographer.
"Looks damn good on your shelf" is the best value Leica T brings.
Leica. The only company who can bring out a product, overpriced by thousands of dollars with so much wrong with it and the users just consider it a "quirky" camera as opposed to a sub-par one.
Yup. Not 5 minutes in and they've talked me out of this one.
Pretty much matches my initial thoughts after playing with one at the launch.
Is that a giant scratch on the left hand side of the screen?
Screen protector. The film that's come with all screen, not an aftermarket really good one.
Liebe Grüße aus Wetzlar, Deutschland! Sehr guter Test.
Leica has always been a camera not technologically great compared to other cameras BUT it has always been a well loved camera. Even for the M type240 its a modern camera with no AF but dang so desired.
Great review. I cannot afford a Leica (yet) and I agree with Chris. If I have that much money, I would just take my fuji x100 and go to Germany instead of buying a camera made in germany 😜
👍
No peaking!?!
So the Leica T & Nex C3 using the same sensor but 10 times the price?
the body housing itself is probably responsible for most of that cost.
if it's not 10x more expensive, it's not leica, body housing it's not that expensive, A7 can be FF with that price, it's brand that make it expensive.
MANOWAR!
They will rock you forevermore.
Looks like a second coming of the EOS M :P
I suspect that if this had a Vivitar badge on the front it would be dismissed even at a quarter of the price.
How true. That is why I buy the Lumix clones of Leicas.
Dear Chris you should have concluded this review at "hell no!" :)
Following your findings I concluded that the only rationale for purchasing this camera would be an emotional one. There are to few pros and two many cons for making educated decision to purchase this slick aluminum shiny little camera with amazing display (and red dot, don't forget the red dot!) :)
Nice objective review as always :)
1. What happens to nice finish or touch screen the first time you drop it?
2. Why is Leica so expensive? I mean ok the lenses whoohoo, but the electronics is just like the rest just much more expensive.
3. Why always 3.5-5.6 on 18-55/56 or 18-105 or 18-200. It seems like the companies try hard to get this range?
br
Henrik
In before HD!
Love is blind
Solid Aloominum ????
So basically crap internals in a fancy case with a price tag that is the result of a group of people break-dancing on a number pad till dead when determining the price markup.
Can you say Leica Lunar? NEX6 with NEX 7 dials and a new useless T mount. Isn't hasselblad almost going under now???
Viva colombia.... That´s because i am colombian...... And to make it clear colombia is an intertropical country, so we dont have snowy winter, but we have climates because os the andes......
Do you remember mr and mrs smith?? Brat pit was in a desert suposed to be bogota.... Wrong... bogota normaly is green and about 15celcius 60 fahrenheit..... all year....
And we also have tropical islands... coconuts, sand and more.... caribean coast.... really hot flatlands..... pacific coast..... rain forest.... high mountain climate.... A paradise for everyone.....
You are invited to take photos in colombia..... and everyone is.... so bring your leica.
And if you come.... give me a call I can be a tourist guide.
And remember... in colombia the only risk is wanting to stay.
Your strangest review. "Bad, bad, sucks, adequate, But, I love this camera!".
Looked like 2 messages: Panasonic/Sony disposa-camera buyers have nothing to envy, but if you are an experienced photographer (like you), you're going to love this camera.
your a funny bastard Chris!.. enough overpriced toys coverage..more gh4 please - do some comparison shooting both still and vid against a MkIII....love your work fella's!
Mmmm... looks kinda like a lovechild of Samsung NX300 and Sony NEX-7...
also I had a canon t2i and at 3200 and it took sharper images than the leica t.
consulado colombiano ;)
Yeah, pain is a turn-on for some people. So GO LEICA.
Personally, I think this camera is ridiculously overpriced for what it can do. But if Hasselblad can find suckers to buy the $12,000 Hasselblad HV (which is really just a $2,000 Sony full-frame with a different body), then Leica shouldn't have any trouble selling this. I'll be saving my money for something with top of the line image quality, aesthetics be damned.
So in Arizona during summer months you will probably be able to fry eggs on that hand polished aluminum body. lol
can tell me what makes leica so special?
The little red dot
Fashion statement.................hipsters get your credit card ready, how awesome would you look if you had this camera sitting in your favourite coffee house with your tightest pair of skinny jeans that you know are preventing you from having any chance of children in the near future, looking at your mint green Vespa parked outside, if you ask me it's a winner..............fashion statement has it come to this? Great review thanks again.
Lol maybe just maybe
Aloominum ????
I don't know why cameras that are focusing on stills have any video capabilities. I would rather them spend time and resources on other parts of the camera...give us a leaf shutter or on board image stabilization or a built in ND filter... I would rather have any one of those things over video in a dedicated stills camera... if I want video on my stills camera I'd get a gh3/gh4... which I have. I don't know why anyone would get this camera...unless you're super rich and buy nothing but Leica... if you want a great Leica experience...buy an M3 with a lens and you'll still have money left over to maybe buy another lens... it's film but you don't get much better than that and if you need a light meter then get an M6. Leica made their name on these cameras. I'm not going to fault them for trying with the T...but I did expect more.
what a joke of a camera. I can just see people buying this and defending it just because they wasted 2 grand on a pretty chunk of aluminum.
why do people accept all these faults with a camera made by a company, thats been in business for decades.its love of a fantasy that you think you are getting.
*a century
That's a step forward for Leica but, hell! anybody with a minimum sense of photography would rather go Fuji or Olympus... why put 2-3 times the price for lower IQ? (I may have understood if the T was offering higher or equal IQ)
6:23, cute girl
8:20, you scared that woman
I will just get a X-T1 or A7 and save the rest for a vacation with a model.
I'm so rich and successful. Let's buy a crappy camera. Just because I have the money. I bet 50% of sold units have a shuttercount of less than 100. Doesn't it look good on the shelf? Finally something to talk about with my customers in a meeting.
You make it sound very much like an Fuji X-E1, lots of flaws and quirks, good image quality, average AF and not great video, in a nice looking body.
Sounds like way too many caveats @ this point. I think my best bet is get a gm1 with the panasonic leica 15mm. The alternative sony is too small for my hands
Why so much fuzz about the aluminum body? It's the same that the ipod nano has been using for 8 years! Leica management should change asap
