Was sent by MDB. I was not disappointed. Keep the Pokémon TCG runs coming. Major nostalgia and I enjoy seeing TCG runs. The videos are great lengths and the narration is superb. You’ll start dripping in subs soon.
I recently just started playing GB1 again, and one of the first people you can talk to in the Rock Club tells you: "Gee! I Lost! Matthew's really good! He'll probably inherit the legendary Pokemon Cards!" After watching this challenge it made me giggle.
Ha! Well that’s good to know. I haven’t played the physical copy in about 20 years, so now I feel better about definitely not cheating with save state.
@@remvaizor3522 You can save between matches in the Elite four in Red and Blue, but that doesn't mean you're supposed to. Obviously it doesn't really matter, but the idea is that you have to defeat four (or five) bosses in a row. More competitive players will attempt to do them all in a row without saving because it means you have to have a good team or play very well to get all the battles to go your way in a row. An inferior team could get through the four matches with saves by simply playing until the luck goes your way. Having the four (or five) matches in a row is a way of eliminating luck based strategies. Like I said, it doesn't actually matter. But the whole premise of having to battle the final bosses all in a row is to make luck a less viable strategy. In a contest like this (with only Parasect-line pokemon even against a fire boss), it certainly makes sense to save your time and sanity with saves.
@@IsaacTheSalsaShark You can swap decks in between opponents in this game as well, to take advantage of type advantage. The game intends for you to be able to save as well, so the challenge is intact.
Never really played the TCG and kinda forgot that it wasn't a typical Pokémon game so that "two Muks and a Mewtwo" line out of nowhere for the Science Club leader absolutely sidelined me lol.
Going by Matthew's statement at the end, that implies his cards were Legendary Pokemon Cards all along. Which makes him look even worse since he can't even utilize their full power very well at all.
I’m loving these TCG videos so much omg. I know content has a limit since there are so few Pokémon TCG video games released, but I’ll watch whatever challenges you cook up! I had an idea for one that I thought was interesting - beating the game using moves that only deal indirect damage, like cat punch on meowth. I’m not sure how many Pokémon actually have moves like that that don’t also deal direct damage, but it’s a thought!
If you do future challenges, pack farming for the challenge cards can be greatly sped up with the DownA glitch, unless of course you want to play the matches for fun. If you aren't aware of the glitch, you just enter the check screen with 'select' during a duel. If you have bench pokemon, move the cursor to bench but stay on the overview screen, not the party screen. Otherwise, leave the cursor on your active pokemon. Then press 'down' and 'A' on the same frame. 50% of the time the match ends and you win. 50% of the time you get stuck in the party screen and need to press 'B' and then 'A' a frame later to redo the glitch.
Man, I love this idea of using different pre-made decks from different NPCs and using to beat the game. I grew up with this game and want to give it another playthrough soon, thanks for showing me a different way to play!
29:40 Speaking of save states, I think it would be alright to use one after going through the game's long tutorial, but before you pick which of the three decks you want to start out with. Would save a lot of time whenever you start a new challenge.
I don't understand why using save states on the final four would be considered cheating considering they GIVE you a free save point before the match to save scum...
I’ve since changed my stance on this. I only meant that like, in the universe of the game. The Grandmasters want your character to win one after another.
>using save states on the elite four You know... they let you save in game between matches. When they ask you if you'd like to prepare, you can write to the diary. You don't actually have to start over from scratch if you lose a match.
With having this being Matthew's Deck Video in mind, I can not look at the Box Art for Pokémon TCG's bottom right corner without reading the words "Incel Limited Edition" instead of "Incl. Limited Edition".
Regarding Courtney's odd favor on switching Moltres, the AI was banking on Moltres' Fighting Resistance, so you couldn't take her down easily, even if her Pokèmon was fully powered. Odd to be sure, but sure as hell worked. And the Twice-Use Defender find was interesting! So it prevents damage from a self-damaging move from the Player's Turn _and_ prevents damage from opponent Pokèmon! I just found you recently and you're definitely one of those "Amazing And Underrated RUclipsrs Buried By The RUclips Algorithm" channels. I'm subbing AND commenting so the algorithm overlords give you the alignment you utterly deserve. Cheers, man! You're by far the most entertaining RUclipsr playing this old, but definitely gold, Pokèmon TCG on the Game Boy, intros and outros included!
You beat them with Matthew's deck... But what about Imakuni's deck? Include a rule forcing you to use his special Trainer Card and... Only downside is that outside of trading, you can only get 2 out of the 4 Imakuni? cards you'll need.

"he gets two muk and two mewtwo, how do you think it went?" I love this series. This game was one of my favorite and i'd like to propose a challenge that I think will be easy. Can you beat pokemon tcg with just a deck of 4 hitmonchans?
Loving these TCG challenges. Keep it up! If you're looking for suggestions, maybe a deck with Pokemon and trainer cards limited to 1 of each type instead of 4?
Oh interesting… that sounds like it could work. I want to find the right balance between a fun and challenging idea, but not mind-numbingly difficult where I’m playing the same fight 20 times over. This is something to consider though 😊
Rhyhorn is a Ground-Rock (not Rock-Ground) pokemon, so the card creators figured it was more of a ground type, than a rock type, so they gave it a Lightning resistance like all the pure ground type pokemon.
Great Series! Love the whole concept of taking one of the kids deck and putting it to the test! I cant imagine taking a rock deck to the grand masters rock resisting cards, so Im glad you pulled thru with a victory! Loved how you went to Matthew in the end too, absolutely hilarious!
I don't know how I found your channel but this old tcg game and its challenge runs give me life please continue with them also like someone else that like paras woot
There’s no point in making you waste time and suffer…… if you need to use save states then you go ahead. The point is “can this deck win” not “final destination, no items, no hit, iron man”.
Love the fact that you’re doing challenges on the TCG Gameboy game, which is one of my favourites of all time. Also, your videos are super entertaining and funny. Looking forward to more!
Just tried a Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan only run. Couldn't get past the Moltres deck. Tried an Exeggcute\Exeggutor run next and couldn't beat my rival with his Charmander and Growlithe deck. Even when he started with Seel I couldn't knock anything out fast enough to survive. These challenges are HARD!
If you want to make your setup easier, you should be able to edit the rom so that one of the starter decks points to the same deck used by the computer opponent you want to copy. There's a disassembly project that should allow you to pinpoint the addresses needing to be changed.
Oh snap you did do a Matthew series lol I mean really is my deck any different for the sequel game relying on Dark Ninetails and Moltress? It's just a big jar of pennies and like "oh you need to flip a coin for my magmar's sand attack? HERE USE ONE OF MINE" (Dumps the jar like a football coach)
These older cards rely sooo much on coin flips. But I get that there needs to be some level of randomness. And being Matthew for a day was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.
I mostly play MTG but I enjoy your challenges so far. Your stall strategy from the last video against Ronald was genius. I love this b/c you have to come up with ideas based on what you have against an AI that's 20 years old yet still can be pretty challenging. I look forward to more

Fighting that ninetales with dancing embers reminded me of when I fought it. I had a Pokémon with all 80 points of health, and I was like “well I’ll be fine as long as there’s at least one tails”… they were all heads.
This strategy is surprisingly viable given how terrible the AI is in this game. They could be holding a gambler in their hand, with 0 cards in their library and still not play it. Problem is this strategy can be very slow and grindy.
