The first thing I do is put an ND filter, so my front element will never be exposed to dust or be touched by mistake.
Because I never have to clean my lens element, It will never get any micro scratches & it also ensures coating remains like new & I get better value while reselling.
Because the ND filter is always on, elements can never get dirty & the filter does get dirty but it's easy to clean or replace it without having to worry too much.

Great technique and it was something that I was using too for my DSLR! I did a similar thing when I bought my Canon EOS R5, but I kept all my EF lenses from my 5D Mark IV. Using a drop-in filter adapter, I can use the same filters on the back of all of my lenses. This has one more advantage. I can now use a variable ND filter with my wide angle lenses, which was previously impossible because of the dark X pattern that you get if you use such a filter in front of them. The reason is, that the light enters the wide angle lenses at different angles in the front element, and the variable ND being two polarised filters in front of each other, are dimming the light differently based on these angles, thus generating that X pattern instead of dimming the light universally. However, in the back of every lens, the light rays are not diverging that much to hit the sensor, and the dimming works properly for all the lenses that I tried! Another benefit is that you’re also able to put any filter in ultra-wide lenses with elements so curved that they don’t even have filter threads.

This is one thing I'll miss if I replace my lens line with native RF. Right now, I adapt older EF/S with a Meike VND drop-in adapter, which allows me to use a VND of 8 up to I think 64 or a CPL all behind my glass. So regardless of what I mount, I have 1 VND or CPL to rule them all since I'm not restricted by the size of the filter threads on different lenses.

Useful if you use special filters for effect frequently - but I generally get a clear lens filter for every lens to protect the front element from dust, damage, etc. as an event photographer. Then you *can* clean the lens with your t-shirt, and when the filter is scuffed up, toss it and get another $40 filter instead of a $400 or $1400 lens!
