  • We are very sad to learn of the passing of our dear friend, Steve James. He visited us many times at Dream Guitars, and recorded a number of times for us in our studio. His wit and skill were such a blessing; his playing a joy to behold. He will be missed. We'd like to offer the following as a memorial.
The exceptional Steve James with a performance of "Amos Johnson Rag"--a tune he learned from Sam McGee. Steve breaks the structure and chords down after the song, providing insight along the way, in a mischievous and intelligent style that is pure Steve James.

I play guitar today because of "Two Track Mind". Good fortune, Steve. Fly free.

Rip Steve. Unfortunately I never got to meet you or see you play live, but benefitted greatly from the purchase of a lot of your books, cd's and videos. Your legacy will live on through these products and more importantly the lives of those your music touched.

Thank you Dream Guitars. Steve James was one of the greatest country blues artists, and you all should get his Two Track Mind album. He is a great singer and incomparable finger picker with great and unique style. I had the great pleasure of listening, watching, and meeting Steve. His respect for the masters and his breadth made him unique. And we have lost him. We lost the greatest.

I will certainly miss Steve. I saw him play live several times in the 80's when we both lived in Austin. I have a couple of his instruction books and learned several tunes from them, as well as some of his recordings on Antones Records (from the 90's) I first learned Amos Johnson rag from his book on country guitar, (written under his given name Steve Chichetti). This video filled in the details of his embellishment of the bridge. Thanks for one last lesson, Steve.

Sounds like he's beating the crap out of it. Which nowadays at least to me, is not the thing to do. But with him, it's THE thing to do! Love this video.
