Welcome back Lisa. I'm so glad to hear that I can get the Sailor Tuzu section to move to a non-triangulated location. I bought two of these pens, and really like the way they write, but cannot get the section to a comfortable position. Yay, maybe I'll go back to using them if I can get a comfortable grip on the section. I have given pens as gifts, in hopes to spread the pen-love. Mostly, I just buy for my personal use. Thanks for another great show.

I hope your Pelikan Hub was a good one. I had a great time at the one I attended in Darkest Saskatchewan. And Pelikan's ink of the year is the best shimmer ink I've met.

Welcome back Lisa and Brian, I hope I can get one of those Japanese pens! I buy all of my pens for ME & I want so many pens… However, when a friend or family member becomes fascinated while watching me use my pen, I will sometimes surprise them with the pen or gift a similar one. There are some pens that will never leave my hand, pens that I love for the era of my life that they represent & those I use for work. I custom grind my nibs & I have an old Waterman that I have crazy love for. Cheers!

Nice show and I like the addition of the CC for comments and other related items. I purchase pens for myself and occasionally as a gift. Gifting a pen is not easy as you are never sure if the recipient will take to the concept fountain pen usage or not. You just cross your fingers and hope for the best.

I buy pens for myself, but I did see a Retro51 Limited Florence Nightingale roller ball for sale at another US retailer and had my wife’s name and RN engraved on to the pen. She looked at the box and said a pen ….why are you buying a pen for me….she was miffed….. until she paused to look at it…then she actually seemed to appreciate it as a nurse. (Apologies I cheated on Anderson Pens and shopped on line elsewhere but apparently you were not carrying it…forgive me). PS I am enjoying the new Pilot from your shop it arrived and is awesome….and thanks for the note Lisa.

When I was a kid my grandma tried to deter me from coffee by telling me I will grow a tail if I drink it (commonly used tactic in the 1970s/1980s in Croatia/Ex-Yugoslavia). Only made me want to drink it even more.
Those Hobonichi covers are great - make me want to get a 5-year journal so I could use them.
I give pens as gifts as much as I can - spreading the joy of writing.

So excited for the pen hub tomorrow. I haven’t yet bought a pen for a gift, but I have enough pens I could conceivably give one away. It almost seems too personal, though.

I first had coffee in my baby bottle as far as I know. I definitely give pens as gifts and pretty much have done so since I worked in a big stationery store in high school. I graduated in ‘82, so that’s been a while!

Yellow inks are my new jam and go so beautifully with autumnal ink palette 🎨. That Iroshizuku will be coming to me 💛. I do give pens as gifts, cast a wide net and have snagged a few converts. I think of myself as the Johnny Appleseed of fountain pens. 😊

Welcome Back, Lisa..and HAPPY THURSDAY! Does gifting a pen to myself count? 😊 The only other person in my life who has shown any sort of interest is my military son, who wanted a nice, functional, understated yet noticeable fountain pen that he can put in his uniform and easily withdraw, uncap, and write. Oh, and he didn't want black or bright blue ink...something dark but acceptable in his office. So, on his 25th birthday, I gifted him a charcoal Lamy Safari with a black nib and a bottle of Robert Oster Thunderstorm. He loves it and writes with it daily...and he's received so many comments about his cool pen...so excited to gift him another pen for Christmas!

Welcome back from up-state N.Y. Lisa. I do enjoy visiting my son and his family in that area when given the chance. I feel the fascination of writing with a 70-100 year old fountain pen that works as well as the day it was new should be shared with as many people as I can. I enjoy giving vintage pens as gifts. I'm not sure everyone who gets one agrees but they can't say my gift wasn't unique.

Sure you were helping your mom. That's what people say when they are visiting Up State NY. That's another way of saying visiting a lock up for a few days. Just joking hope you didn't work too hard with your mom.

They make great gifts. I think that it is fun to get someone interested in fountain pens. Then number of people who end up being friends and talking about pens is much greater than the people who say they cant stand that you got them addicted to another hobby! Thanks for the videos.

Thanks for being so enthusiastic about the Tuzu. I guess I'll buy one. I just made an orange Lamy Al-star a present filled with Diamine Pumpkin vor a 62nd birthday. So, I do both buying mountain pens for me and trying to convince others that the nicest way to write is with a fountain pen. Bye for now!😊

Hi Lisa from Syracuse. I have a blue & orange hobo cover from last year but for me it’s for the Mets. I’m with you Brian, I like it quiet in the am. I have tried gifting pens. Grandson has a Shark but only used it once when I gave it to him. He was 8. I sent daughter #2 a set of Varsity pens. She enjoyed them but didn’t want more. Daughter #1 went to the Philly Pen Show with me. She liked the Metropolitan. I’m not sure if she uses it much. I tried.

Great show! I have given a few fountain pens as a gift, but only to people who really show an interest in trying them. I don't have any friends who like them, and some who actually dislike them intensely! Clearly they haven't had the experience that I have with them. And once in a while I give a Retro 51 rollerball to someone. But that's it. So I give myself fountain pens and Retro 51s...many, many, many times!

Thanks Andersons! And welcome back Lisa.
Most of my pen purchases are for myself, with occasional gifts to others. Fountain pens are a very personal choice, it's really hard to buy a fountain pen for someone else. Having reached a point of resistance to acquisition, I'll "gift" a pen to myself as recognition of some accomplishment or special occasion.

I mainly buy pens for my collection, but when I come across a pen that I think someone will like, I usually purchase it for them for their next special occasion gift. For example, the Monteverde tool ballpoint pen was a great gift for my dad, who collects tools and is always building or engineering something. I think most people appreciate a good pen at some level (even one with a level built-in...see what I did there 😜).
Thanks for another great episode. 🥰

I mainly buy for my collection, but the times I did buy them as gifts I did it for close friends. I did pen friend gifts in that I bought two different Lamy Al stars in two different colors that went together, swapped the caps and I let them choose which one the wanted and I took the other. That way everytime I wrote with it I am reminded of the good friend. To me it is sentimental but also I got a new pen as well 😀

  • @larryjensen303

I tend to buy pens only for myself. My attempts to gift them to others hasn't worked out very well. I used to provide clients who were signing documents a Parker with gel ink (which I thought was one of the greatest inventions ever), It's such a personal choice and it seems like it just isn't too important to many people - I try to limit my exposure to pen unenthusiasts. Your coffee comments brought to mind a question I once asked my father about the greatest invention he witnessed in his life time - he responded, the microwave to re-heat his coffee. Sometimes it's just best not to ask such questions in anticipation of a windfall answer.
