This was actually the first time I’ve watched you paint. I love how you paint. I’m 63 and disabled. I am learning to paint as a way for me to try to focus on something instead of my continuous pain. I had a traumatic brain injury which basically ended my career as a special education teacher. I tutor for free and try to bring art into my tutoring. My students find this a pleasurable experience and love coming to tutoring. Many of them paint/draw so much better than I can ever do. I plan on using your video to inspire our next painting session.
Hi Charlene, thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you're along with me on this journey in art. I'm excited for you to grow and develop and I hope you find some meditative peace in painting as well. :) I'm always here if you have questions about materials or painting :)
I am so glad to see a content-creator on RUclips to offer pointers on still-life painting. This is a fine-art skill that has fallen to the wayside and a subject matter that gouache lends itself to. Your advice, in your soft-spoken manner, is on par with a course in fine-art painting. Excellent demonstration.
After reading the other comments, I see that I'm not the only one who first saw your work on Essential Craftsman's RUclips channel. You make what you do look so easy, but of course it's not! I have little painting ability, but enjoy watching and listening to you. Please keep posting tutorials!
I love watching these. theyre so relaxing and also very educational. im just starting out using gouache and really starting get serious about art. its a real passion of mine and its something that allows me to be free and explore and observe the beauty of the world. thank you so much!
Your gouache videos are fantastic! I was running out of new videos to watch on James Gurney's channel, and I'm glad that I found yours only a few days ago. I really want to try this medium! Thanks so much for sharing.
I'm in Australia and have never heard of this brand before now. Nice to see something coming out of New Zealand. This looks like a formidable student grade Gouache... and as always, a pleasure to watch you paint 👍
What attracted me to watch this was the knife, the loose application of the paint. I came away better than before and wonderfully relaxed from your soothing voice. Thank you for that! In the end, I fell in love with the tomato work. I’m always surprised, even these days, how value and colors, in relation to each other, change. Brilliant!
These are the paints I am using as I daily explore the medium. As a watercolorist, everything about gouache is challenging. Since I have not tried another brand, I do wonder if Graham’s would do what I keep trying unsuccessfully to do. I’m assuming it’s beginner’s learning curve. 😆 I’ll see if I can get some 🍅 to glow like yours. Shared on FB.
Thanks for the video and the giveaway. I am new to gouache, so a set like this will help me play around with colour. I paint with watercolour mostly, and painting with gouache is like learning to speak another language. But I am hanging in there! I like the idea of the underpainting. It is a good idea to close those little gaps and, in this case, give a bit of warmth to the painting. Will have to try it next time I paint with gouache. Thanks again
Hello dear, always grateful to see a new video pop up. The adorable intro sounds so familiar by now, with how many times I've just sat down and watched you paint. The Still-life turned out very eloquent, I adore it! I hope you're well, and thank you for sharing.
This is the third video of yours I’ve watched. I really enjoy all the information you share on the materials and your process. I look forward to watching more. I am a bit new to gouache, but I plan on trying to do more with it. Thank you.
Thanks for the valuable lessons! I'm transitioning from watercolor painting to gouache and I'm having a hard time. I'll apply your advice and use less water. I find it impressive how you draw your sketch directly with paint. Your loose style is liberating, you reduce things to the essence and I love that.
sinagy that process was something i lifted from oil painters and came to love it. It prevents me from getting to detailed too fast. If you watch a demo where I draw with pencil you can see I often WAY over draw the scene. I can get lost. Thanks for watching!
I've recently discovered your channels. I have to say, hearing your "thought process" as you paint is very interesting and it teaches a lot. Thanks a lot for your videos.
I love how juicy the cut tomatoes look and the reflections on the knife. Also, I think I'd like to try with a large flat brush now to see if it can help me loosen up my brushwork a bit. Now I'm hungry LOL I will share with my brother, he just started painting with gouache and he is having a blast!
This was a grand demo and I really enjoyed watching how you did the knife. The tomatoes were very well rendered as well. Excellent painting when. It was all done!
Made me think of a tomato sandwich on a warm southern afternoon. What an enjoyable demo. Thank you for explaining your guide to focusing on the foreground ❤️
I love your still life paintings, it inspires me to practice more gouache and I would appreciate getting more to continue developing my skills. all the love x
i just ordered a sketchbook and i cant wait to try it out while applying your painting techniques! im currently practicing with oils right now, but i will definitely make it work
Excellent video and I’m so glad I found you on YT. I’ve been a watercolor artist for many years and have *barely* dipped my toes into gouache. These look like they’d be great fun. Sharing your vid with my FB art groups and thanks for considering my entry!
I've learned to paint in gouache with winsor and newtons designers gouache. I use primary red, primary blue, primary yellow, black ,and white. I have loved these paints for a long time, they are well worth the money.
Rory Phillips me too! I picked those because the craft store always had a weekly half off so I could go get a tube a week for like $5 and built a limited palette. The same colors actually when I started. I use m graham now. I like how they blend and wet up. They mold super quick though
I love watching your videos for the gouache tips and process. I've been wanting to pick up the medium but it's a little intimidating so every tip helps.
Hey Jared! Love this piece. So warm and cozy. Glad to state that you have admirer on other continents, such as me and my husband :) Keep up with the good work!
Hi Jared, Thank you I so enjoy your demonstrations. I learned quite a bit from your demonstrations and since I am new to watercolor/gouache your patience and demeanor online with your simplistic style makes it easier to follow at home. I would love to know what your child is saying at the opening of your video! We get such a kick out of it. Thank you again and looking forward to your next demo! Regards, Brenda
So amazing to see a mundane home scene turning into a masterpiece! Do you have any tips on better directing and controlling your brushstrokes? Thank you!
I suppose- think of the big shapes first before allowing yourself to work in the details. Also consider brushing with the form of the object thinking of the object in terms of planes and not over rendering the shapes they you see. Thanks for watching!
Amazing work in this one. Can you give us a few tips on how you got the translucent surface of the tomato skin? I can see the smooth reflective surface of the skin that tomatoes have and blown away with how you accomplished that in this painting!
thank you so much. :) I think the key is to focus on the subsurface scatter of light. That is to say- keep in mind that light is not just reflecting but getting trapping in the skin. So it increases the saturation in both the light and shadow. You have to override the impulse to go cool in the shadow or too dark and really use bright pops of red and orange or even yellow in the skin. Hope that helps!
Great video as always Jared! Really enjoy your videos, both the painting and the commentary. I notice you start out with some grays for the sink and knife. What colors do you tend to use to blend grays? I am often unsatisfied with my grays-too warm/too cool, too dark, too light. Thanks!

Jared, this is the best painting of tomaticide I've ever seen... no court in the country would convict you. I love it!!! ;0)

Excellent demonstration.
I liked how a few spots of white on the Tomatoes brought them to life. Well done.
I love how your paintings looks so fresh and spontaneous while keeping in mind the big picture and the general tones.
After reading the other comments, I see that I'm not the only one who first saw your work on Essential Craftsman's RUclips channel. You make what you do look so easy, but of course it's not! I have little painting ability, but enjoy watching and listening to you. Please keep posting tutorials!
This painting has that vibrating quality that I can't explain but I love
I learned a lot from this video. Your painting using Jeece brand gouche showed how vibrant this paint is capable of. Thank you for a great demo.!
Your cutting board paintings are always such a treat. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the video and the giveaway Jared. Your RUclips channel has quickly become one of my favorites!
So glad I found this (or the algorithm presented it). Wonderful art. Great voice. Very soothing, and also inspiring. Thank you!
I had not heard of gouache painting before this video.. I love the detail you achieved with such a large brush.
Loved your gouache sketch. Wonderful shifts in colour within the major shapes.
Enjoyed the way you showed the metallic reflections
This was so relaxing to watch after a long day. The way gouache dries with all the warm red and yellow tones is just gorgeous
Beautiful job, as usual. Always love the color and looseness in your work.
I'm new in this channel but i loved this painting

I feel so calm after watching this
I have heard of squinting. I had not heard yet to squint using only one eye. Wow, that’s so cool what that does!
Sarah Venz yes! :) you lose depth perception closing one eye. It helps :) thanks for watching
