On a semi-related note, as a newbie film editor, I found out the hard way that the best life hack to speed up the editing process is to make sure you're present during the filming and to understand the director's vision so you can pin point the issues that would/will happen during the editing process...

The stacked timeline is a game changer. I don't know how I didn't know about this before..... I can't wait to give this a try! This would be especially helpful when editing multiple 'scenes' together. Sometimes it's overwhelming having a massive timeline; but editing each scene or sequence in its own timeline, then appending it to the proper place in the 'final' timeline is clutch!

Oh yes! Editing in reverse is something I've been doing instinctively, good to know it's a thing. I can definitely spot the "errrrms" in the audio waveform! I'm moving to Resolve from PowerDirector and the ability to mark in/out on clips is something I'm looking forward to being able to use. Super helpful video as usual, thanks.

Cutting from backward is brilliant! For me, I'm working on travelog video and usually I have already organize them into different folders for each date, location, either a roll or b roll. Then I will create several sequence like intro, activity 1, 2, 3 and so on and outro and one main sequence consists of those sub-sequences. Then I'll dump all the clip into timeline of each sequence and do rough cut like you did. I used color label & chapter markings too as the video is very long it would get very confusing to know which one is which.

@@dunnadidit It’s really intuitive to use. Reminds me of when I got my 1st Apple computer years ago, just opened it up and started using. I’ve tried using both APP and FCP and could never get the hang of either one as easily as I’ve done with DR. Plus there’s the colour grading.

I usually edit my videos to the audio waveform. I got in the habit of doing that since I edited the podcast episodes at my previous job. The habit stuck and it's made editing so much easier and quicker.
I rarely use the stacked timeliness u less I'm creating a highlight reel.
I color coded my clips for a documentary I shot and edited. It was so much easier seeing who I might've left out of the story.

  • @samlebricoleur

Personally I leave the video running while editing, I use speed x2 or x4 for preview, and I cut everything at that speed. I don't even need to understand what I'm saying because it is myself talking and I know what I'm talking about (I combine it with reading audio & going directly to the last part). I would use x2 if it was footages from someone else.

I prefer to edit in Davinci but I usually use After Effects for my time remamping because the graph feature similar to the spline tool is really easy to use. I have used the spline tool but I find it very tedious compared to After Effects. This could also be because I dont know how to properly use it?
