Thas what people not realize. WvA and MvdP are riding bikes against each other since they were little kids. They both have huge respect for each other, press is trying to make them mortal enemies.
Huge respect, but not like they re friends. Cause if they would ve been friends the press wouldn t have talked shit about rivalry.... Still, some would ve been so pissed for that shoe in the wheel incident
Being born in Belgium is great for this, seeing Wout finish second to Sven Nys at the age of 18 in (I think) his first cyclocross with the pro’s was amazing, they also had a tv show called ‘Container Cup’ were atletes from all branches of sport had to do several exercises, including a 3km time trail, Wout destroyed the time of MvdP with 10 seconds (also leaving behind guys like Remco Evenepoel/Greg van Avermaet,...) think he had 500 watts average during that 3km, absolute monster
"This guy is like a bulldozer, with a wrecking ball attached. He'll leave a ring around your eye, and tread marks on ya back! He's an animal, he's hungry!" You called it Bill, back in 4.2, 5 years ago!
I discovered cyclocross a few years ago and it was amazing seeing him and mvdp battle it out. And to see them now is unbelievable. They made such a seamless transition to the road. I love the way he races. He never gives up and gives 100% every time. All the best in the future.
Nicely done 👌 As a WVA fan, I recall one important moment that defined or started his TT career, beating Tony Martin (still at his peak) in 2016 “Ronde Van België” prologue stage. It was a very short stage but still very surprised to see Wout suddenly on top in one of his first big road races. He is a powerhouse, able to perform high numbers during longer efforts. Possibly underestimated at that.
Van Aert is the definition of pushing your limits and never giving up to me. His mind is just too powerful, he won't let anything break him. That's why he became my favorite rider.
Amazing cool video, it's amazing to see that during all these moments i was actually watching these races back then. Super nice video and according to me almost perfection in the order.
Great video! Hard time to be a fan of cycling right now huh? I'm rooting for both Wout and MVdP at the same time; show up to group rides always on my Canyon but with a Jumbo cap...
I'm so grateful that I'm living through the Wout, MvDP, Allaphillipe, Pidcock era. Each race some of them is in is such a cornucopia of great cycling. I do find the the omission of the 2019 Cx worlds race where what separated Wout from MvDP was a simple bobble in the finishing laps notable. Then again when these guys race it's always amazing.
I actually think you may have given short shrift to Wout in 2020's TdF. The important thing there wasn't that he outsprinted some guys; we all know that he's strong. But when he got on the front of the mountain train and SHELLED the pure climbers-like, just absolutely rode everyone off his wheel-that was unexpected. That was a sign of things to come. He didn't win that stage, but it was the truest sign of his versatility. Who else do we talk about that climbed mountains and won sprints and crushed the classics? I don't know if he'll ever win the Tour. Probably not. But everyone will keep their eye on him all the same.
Great point , and this sets up yet another significant moment when after all the work he does at thenTour he gets third at the World Road TT. Amazing rider.
cyclocross creats cycling champions, Van aert, van der poel and soon pidcock.... it's not a coincidence that cyclocross makes a road rider more complete!!
Thats why peoples need to see that those other cyclocross riders that can compete with them on a good day deserve the respect and recognition that they are powerfull and strong cyclists to.
Jaarmarktcross niel was one of the first race I saw , he took on the entire field and finished 2nd to Sven ,also Loenhout the next year the battle with Mathieu that day was amazing, also Schalke sels 2016 he took off on a dirt section like cancellarra!
Sven was an amazing CX who didnt have the stamina to win the classics. If he did.... sven would have won both flanders and roubaix. Maybe even more than once.
My favorite moment will always be the cx championship in 2016. I'm belgian myself and back then I already was a huge wva fan. Seeing him winning that day and not giving up gave me the brightest smile back then and made me fall in love with cycling. It's fantastic to see how he has grown during the years and how a complete rider he nowadays is.
The first world cup win in Koksijde in 2014, under tutelage of his coach and mentor Niels Albert who became world champion on the same course in 2012 and had been forced to stop cycling due to a heart disease in May 2014, could have had a place in this list too.
At age 27 do you think WVA has peaked physically? This has been an impressive year for him, it will be interesting to see if he can back that up next year.
small sidenote, 2 other great champions started with cyclocross, Peter Sagan WC juniors 2008 second place, Julian Alaphillipe WC juniors 2010 second place
4 tyre punctures was not won due to Wut being so good. After every puncture Mathieu extended the lead. Here Mathieu was easily the better of the two, Wout did a great job for sure but to say Wout did not win because of tires is nonsense. The next year was a true masterclass of Wout, Mathei was very good Wout was head an shoulders better. Point to make here is that in Cyclocross and in classics Wout and MAthieu seem to diverge: Mathieu became WC in 2019, 2020, 2021and 2023. Wouts last was 2018. In classics Wouts last win was in Amstel gold I think in 2021. Mathieu has won three classics and two cyclocross champioships since 2021. That is statistically at least the case. In real life Wout came very close on several occassions but missed out do to being slightly less powerful or having bad luck like this Paris ROubaix. I do feel he will win Roubaix, he could have done so yesterday. ROnde van Vlaanderen: he is not going to win that one ever. Lombardia otoh he could win. Liege Batogne Liege too in short: I still see win him 4 out of five monuments. I don't think Mathieu is going to win LBL and Lombardia. But he has surprised me and I am sure a lot of others more than once.
It may not have been correct, and I know I have to improve, but it is the Belgian pronunciation rather than the French pronunciation for that particular town/ race.
