I honestly really mess with this idea. It looks miserable to navigate, but maybe add certain crafting trees for certain items like feathers and flint. Make the islands with ores not be affected by gravity if you use blocks also affected by gravity. Reference the dark hurts you by adding a mechanic where if you are standing on a block like obsidian or coal blocks for too long, you start taking damage. A custom achievement set would be awesome as well. Great stuff from Loki with a lot of promise.
btw I don't think you got it but you can use the slabs to build down by just placing them over islands and then breaking them until you reach the island
