    Thank you for doing this video since the UF8 is still new to the market. Just got mine two weeks ago and very impressed. It is very user-friendly, very plug & play, and the programming aspect of it with 360 is stupid easy. The SSL drum strip and voice plug-ins are included, and they give you a 6 month trial with the SSL bundle. Using Logic and very happy.

      does this come close to mouse and trackpad...most famous producers I follow, just use mouse or track ball, and don't mess with consumer surfaces. Or is this a hassle , and by the time it's set up you're already done. on a laptop.?

    • @otv88
      @otv88 3 года назад +3

      @@levondarratt787 I tried two different consoles years ago, but it was too much effort and a distraction, but this this is very user-friendly. There are some instrument plug-ins where I'm still using my mouse, but I was long annoyed with using a mouse for the smallest tasks, especially mixing. I also needed faders to better control string instruments, so that was part of the logic. I've set up many hot keys on the SSL so I don't have to use my laptop or mouse...there is a small adjustment curve of course. This won't make you compose any better, but it has drastically improved my work flow and saves my hand/arm from hours and hours of repetitive motions; this alone is a big deal for me. It's just so damn easy to use and set up. Good luck @Levon D.

    I bought one UF8 and I liked it so much that I immediately bought another one. :) This is a total game changer. I have programmed the soft buttons to show mix buckets like DRUMS, KEYS, GUITARS, etc. in Studio One and I'm using the second layer to control the Console of my UAD Apollo hardware. I'm not sure why UAD isn't able to implement this, but there is a smart guy who developed the Software "UA Midi Control" and together with UF8 this is killer (just a tip for the UAD Apollo users out there). The only thing I don't like is the feel of knob caps.

      what about major Daws? Studio One I great for consumers, but what about Pro Tools, Logic? Or even Ableton for DJ's. Does it work the same way? Usually they fail , when it is time to go pro level.

    • @JM_2019
      @JM_2019 3 года назад

      @@levondarratt787 Not sure why you think Logic or ProTools is more pro than Studio One. The reason why DAWs are failing is usually the DAW itself. The S8 is as good as the DAW supports the Mackie Control. It's possible that S1 support is a bit better than ProTools' but in general all mentioned DAWs are supported.

    Easily the best Q & A overview of the SSL UF8 I've seen. In-depth and eyes-on. Looking at the manual online also helped me figure-out what the actual dimensions of the unit are. User-programable macros are NOT to be underestimated. The compact flexibility seems to compliment the tactile sensitiveness in an efficient way. Non-obtrusive. Sleek design. Even modular to a degree with the rack ears.

      Whenever people say that, I wonder if they misjudged the way it's meant to be used.
      For example, I see some people new to one-fader products mix entire sessions.
      That's not economical or comfortable. If you are just using it for programming automation, it's probably more than enough for most people during a mixing stage.
      Many people sell it and sadly never return to a pretty useful tool.
      While I love my many-fader controllers, I still tend to use my good old Alphatrack for most of my automation when I am alone mixing.

      You can have transport button with the soft keys on top, and it allows to not have physical buttons which would be messy if you would stack multiple UF8, you would have multiple transport buttons. Now they released the UC1 for EQ/Comp control, it’s just a matter of time for them to release a Transport/Master controller. So you could have an UC1, couple of UF8 and a Uxxx Transport controller and recreate a complete console layout without having redundant transport buttons. My 2¢

    I love using physical controls, and have a controller in my studio alongside other synths etc... so I am fully into that way of working, but it's ridiculous to say that you're only using hand-eye coordination for changing things using a mouse vs. a pot on a controller. Hand-eye coordination works for everything including adjusting a pot or a fader.
    Why have companies that create controllers gotta make out that using a mouse is some terrible hellish experience, especially given there are hardware controllers and hardware DAWs that feature a trackball control in them. A mouse is really great for some stuff, not so great for other things.

    So if/when you would chain multiple units together what happens to all the function buttons? I would have designed extender units to not make it look like you just chain the same unit over and over(doesn't look like one cohesive unit). Do they (the function buttons) become independent controls or all chain together to do the same function across units? I like this but I just think it looks cheap and unimaginative in aesthetic design for a modern home or pro studio. I would have wanted a better look more like a mini console than everything crammed into a DJ looking unit. Look at the Icon Qcon Pro X and the extenders it has. That looks like a beefy console and has all the functionality and programmability like all the other units out there but lacks the fancy little color screens of the Avid S1 and SSL. I want to see a control surface that makes you think you are in a big studio in design at an AFFORDABLE price point and a "pro look as well from SSL. Add a meter bridge as the Qcon has at the top of the unit (instead of everything in a 1"x1" screen)or at least make the little cute screens tilt up so I don't have to hunch over to see them from my seat. I can't believe no one will do this kind of thing. It's 2021/22 and yet designs are still 2005. $1399 is not interesting to me as it is now., sorry. Avid's S1 design is way better and Icon's is more inexpensive for what you get. I expect more from SSL. Look at how it even looks sitting in the SSL console. Looks like it doesn't even fit and was just dropped in. Yuck. Make me want to spend my money.

    The UF8 is a major disappointment: (1) When you get beyond the hype you find that SSL have programmed the UF8 so that the plugin parameter names disappear when faders are flipped so it is ABSOLUTELY USELESS for writing automation in flip mode! It's such a basic requirement to know what a fader controls! (2) There no track colours! - They are essential and this has been requested time and time again by users. It's impossible to navigate a project easily when there are no colours to differentiate tracks AND made worse because ... (3) Track names are truncated so short. (Note to SSL: EDM track names are not simple scribble strips like "GTR 1" - Know your users please!). The truncation has to do with the Mackie legacy I understand but what I don't get is that Softube Console 1 pulls the full track names from Ableton. Hey SSL coders ... just copy the way Softube do it SSL - PLEASE! I'll happily add a track name copying plugin on each channel to pull the track name through in full if it makes the UF8 actually a usable tool. (4) Worst of all is the ridiculous amount of time it is taking SSL to go M1 native. My companion UC1 is redundant next to the UF8 when using the latest version of Ableton. If things don't improve both the UC1 and UF8 are going up for sale because it's just a frustrating waste of money on good hardware with underwhelming implementation. I've spoken with SSL and made them aware of these issues in a constructive way saying "hey guys, we need this and it'll make the products really usable". They just ignore my emails now and won't comment on whether any of this is coming. It's so frustrating to support them to be better but then see SSL releasing new plugins over sorting out major usability issues for existing customers. What incentive is there when they already have our money? Do better please

      @@everydaysame4880 No, but it looks like it is a completely different beast to the UF8. I would be tempted to say that the push is an attempt at providing an alternative "input source' to a standard keyboard whereas the UF8 (and most other control surfaces with "standard" faders) have their lineage in a mixer.
      The push, like the keyboard, is a way to assist in the composition process whereas the UF8, (and most other control surfaces), are more about assisting you with the latter part of the overall production process (notwithstanding that there is an overlap between the processes of composition and production that both these units cover).

      @@palaHD you said there’s no dedicated Play, Record, Stop etc buttons. However, the SSL rep stated that their intention for the UF8 was for the user to tell it what to do (i.e. being customizable to fit anyone’s workflow). So having dedicated buttons for these would go against that objective because maybe someone might want the top left buttons to be other controls and not play/stop/record

    If you only require 8 moving faders, then this is battle ready. If, however, you want multiple faders for Old Skool real mixdowns, this device is an own goal. A grown up engineer wants a master unit with transport and assignable buttons. Then 8 Channel fader only extentender modules that will pack closely together....up to 32 Chans total is fine. We don't need 4 jog wheels and big gaps between the faders. WAKE up SSL. Stop listening to the Twats in the Marketing Department.

      @@BMoreGoHard Yes I do. Had it since it came out and zero problems with it. Has run multiple DAWS with no issues. It's my DAW controller surface of choice. Have also tried Presonus products, but found that X-touch does it all for what I need. IMO, If I had an SSL XL-Desk, etc. I would get this to keep it in the "family" and impress clients, but at nearly triple the price you could get X-touch and other stuff. SSL is coming out with more products, it's like they are stripping down a console and selling piece by piece - 500 series preamps, comps, EQ's, UC1, UF8, etc.

      @BMoreGoHard 3 года назад

      @@GeoZero oh ok. Well, I just copped the UF8 and UC1. I’ll say this about a name. Some times it’s garbage, but there is a reason some names can demand three times another product when you’ve put in the work to create a good one. People will spend for a name because they are paying for trust. And facts show that ssl know how run circuits for consoles.

    • @GeoZero
      @GeoZero 3 года назад

      @@BMoreGoHard If I had an actual SSL console or mixer, even a XL Desk, etc, then yes I would consider these because of the name branding. But if you are getting these and mixing in the box on say Ableton, or whatever, then it makes no sense from a financial perspective - you are simply overpaying for the name. These are just controllers. IF SSL came out with a mouse I would not buy it because I can use my Logitech one just fine. That's the point I was trying to make. That said I own SSL EQ's in 500 series format because they actually mean something.
