Hey Travis, my Coach tought me to go in with a straight entry meaning that you do not backstep because you can get counterd. What is your opion? For me it works better with a backstep. Love your videos and I can practice your tips, because we can train at the moment Keep it up Best regardas from Germany
If you don't have a back step you will be to far away to really drive your opponent to the ground. Your coach must just start right next to his opponents when he does the throw so it's not needed.
Thank you sensi. A question:should I as a righty be pushing w/ my right hand to guide him down or just holding the tension and reeping the leg? Sometimes if I push they just stumble walk away from me. (Perhaps it's a direction fail)
As a rule of thumb if you try remove support point the opponent weigth shoudl on it. If they walk backwards then the weigt is no on that leg. push or pull down will both accomplish this fi dine into correct direction. Travis seems to push and looks like working. Obviously there are variations on details for every throw but start by observing this video as to pick one full version that all bits and pieces belong together befire starting tu tune version for you
You want to get your wrist over the shoulder then start a downward pressure on the leg. A good rule of thumb to follow is pull with your arms and push with your legs to keep chest and body contact! Obviously that rule gets broken a lot but it's a good starting point.
Travis, I've got a question regarding feet position. You've got right foot straight forward and left at an angle of 90 degree. Some people make steps with two feet forward and then the last move is a little bit different (in my opinion more on the circle). Do you see any pros or cons each version?
The reap in a circle is an old school mentality that you don't see two often in competitive judo. Most judo too physical to get the reap to actually be effective. It's only seen when your hopping with your opponent and you need to change the direction or when your Uchimata has failed and you come out attacking Ouchi.
@@TravisStevensgrappling you're right about this old school. Actually my coach always wanted from me this version in a circle and he was old :) Unfortunatelly he passed away in may this year at the age of 87 years. He paid attention to every technical detail - exactly like you. Probably that's why he was 11 times gold medalist at the national chapionship and had olimpic students with gold and silver medals in '88. I remember one individual training with him when he told me to bent the left leg in knee to have greater breadth of movement in ouchi and said that I have to stop turning my body to the left. I was focused on my feet and hips and I couldn't understand why he was telling me that I still move to the left. Finally he grabbed my head and said: now do the ouchi :) He wanted from me to keep the head and sholders forward in the initial move because circle had to be done on the rigte side not in the middle. I totally agree with you Travis about this combination - uchimate and ouchi. I used to do this on the left side.
@@scottbrady2301 we are on vacations, here! Training sessions start end of August! It's too hot here in Greece these days! Why are you on lock down, where do you live?
I always been thought to throw in this direction with ouchi gari and I'm usually successful with it but I find it difficult to get ouchi alone when I've got non-standard grip like when I get my favourite arm drag/ Russian tie-type grip. I can use ouchi to off-balance the opponent and get sumi gaeshi but never ouchi alone with this grip.
I just missed giving you a live chat on the last video. It doesn't seem like you have a Patreon or SubscribeStar, even though you put out really high quality Judo videos. This next statement may be a bit childish, but with your skills in Judo and BJJ, you are the last person I would like to face in a real-life situation. Seven years of Muayi Thai, with regional and national competitions, plus a blue belt in Judo, doesn't make up for it. I wouldn't stand a chance. What striking skills do you have?
Ouchi Gari is one of my favorites- Thank you for sharing solid technique with us!
I'm very impressed with Travis. I had misjudged him. A lot people don't know or can't explain, but Travis delivers on both aspects.
Very helpful Travis, Thanks. I've just realised that I'm guilty of trying to throw in the wrong direction
I think we all are!
Thank you! A really thoughtful explanation. Ouchi gari went from a technique I hated to my favorite, I had an awesome coach go into detail like this.
Thats awesome Anastasia! It's all in the details.

It's amazing how much your videos help me Travis. So much awesome consistent content. Thank you!
Happy to hear that Matt! It's comments like yours that keep me doing it!
Thanks! Serious lack of good judo channels on youtube
I'm working on it! But it takes time to grow!
Great vid good concept
Amazing , a thing I wasn´t doing wrong !

Awesome Nico!
Good way of explaining why it’s to the back right and now back.
Superb technique, thanks
Very helpful Travis, Thank you

@@konstantinos-antoniosbme-m6472 yeah im in the UK, were still on lockdown for sports cubs and gyms... with no end in sight... enjoy your break mate
If your opponent is standing with their right leg forward do you still finish this throw to the back right corner?
then, you have to make him step foward with his left leg before the throw
Or have them step backward with the right leg, or swing them behind you so you can get tot the leg. I'll make a video on it.
I'll be hitting it a 1 o'clock at bjj
LAMO! I hope it works for you!

Yeah it's almost impossible to do Ouchi from that grip because they can always spin out to their stomach.
