AGL has been at the forefront of incorporating Flutter, a popular framework in the mobile phone space, into automotive applications. Notably, Toyota has made a significant investment in adapting Flutter for automotive and general embedded use cases.
Traditionally, Flutter is recognized for its capability to design once and deploy across various platforms such as Android, iOS, Windows, and Linux. Now, with AGL's efforts, it has extended its reach into the automotive sector, demonstrating the versatility of this framework. The collaboration with IC resulted in a year-long project that started from scratch, utilizing Figma for design, and culminated in a cutting-edge Flutter-based demo. The emphasis was on achieving a modern and smooth In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system with hardware acceleration.
Running on an Renesas Car H3 chip, the demo not only promises compatibility with the current Raspberry Pi 4 but also hints at forthcoming support for Raspberry Pi 5. AGL plans to consolidate these developments into a cohesive release, slated for February, marking their 17th release and underscoring the commitment to a software-defined future for vehicles.
The R Car H3 chip, designed specifically for automotive applications, serves as the cornerstone of this initiative. Positioned as the high-end chip in the third generation of the Renaissance family, it provides the necessary horsepower for the demanding requirements of automotive environments.
AGL's demonstration goes beyond In-Vehicle Infotainment systems, as Flutter finds its way into an instrument cluster, highlighting the adaptability and potential widespread use of this framework within different components of a vehicle. Toyota's deployment of AGL into millions of vehicles, including models like the Lexus TX 500h, underscores the tangible impact of open-source platforms in the automotive industry.
As part of the Linux Foundation umbrella, AGL operates as a collaborative project with 150 member companies. These include major automakers and tier-one suppliers like Denso, Panasonic, Continental, Bosch, Toyota, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and SAIC. Their collective goal is to build a completely open-source platform for in-vehicle systems, fostering innovation and collaboration across the automotive ecosystem.
The Flutter implementation at AGL has witnessed remarkable advancements over the past few years. Even on hardware like Raspberry Pi 4, known for its resource constraints, Flutter performs optimally. The growing community of developers and companies involved in embedded Flutter development, particularly for various ARM-based systems, indicates a promising future for this framework within the automotive landscape. AGL's demonstration at CES 2024 not only showcases their commitment to innovation but also reflects the broader trend towards open-source, collaborative development in the automotive industry.

@@user-wx2fp9cm3i but Google promises to hardware accelerate all Flutter to each Arm CPU platform, is it not?? I am quite excited about Flutter, I haven't checked how smooth Flutter has become over the past couple years, I hope Google and other contribute to make it excellent and really multi-platform..
