Join me as I traverse the rugged terrain of Southern New Mexico in a 2020 Mercedes Sprinter 4x4, retracing the historic Butterfield Overland Mail Trail. Established in 1857, the Butterfield trail served as a vital link for transportation and communication between St. Louis and San Francisco, reducing the cross-country journey from months to just days. As I navigate the same paths once traveled by stagecoaches and pioneers, I uncover the untold stories of endurance and perseverance etched into the desert landscape. Experience the thrill of off-grid exploration and witness the timeless beauty of the American Southwest on this unforgettable journey along the Butterfield trail.
Why was I so thirsty while watching this video?
32:18 That's where you want a metal detector. It's probably picked clean at this point but just the search alone can get the adrenaline flowing. I always thought that back in the day before banks, people would hide their valuables in stone or foundation walls. Not to mention the stuff they drop out of their pockets.
I like how you mix things up and let us see a part of our world most of us would have a hard time getting to. Your skills are amazing and it shows.
Please, please have more videos like this. This is one of the best episode of forgotten history that hardly anyone knows about. Or really do the research for something like this. Your film work is phenomenal and I look forward to each video you do. Please do more history like this or anything near it. Maybe one day I can do work like this. Then again, we have your videos. You are awesome! Keep up the wonderful work. Thank you so much!
Agreed
You should always show some cooking in your videos. I like the cooking parts of your videos
Chad almost always does.
You should watch Foresty Forest for that.
3:37 my goodness look at those skies...
Currently reading "The Last Ride of the Pony Express : My 2,000-mile Horseback Journey into the Old West" by Will Grant. Fascinating trip by a man with two horses covering the old Pony Express route from Missouri to California.
The Butterfield Overland Trail was the precursor to the Pony Express. Interesting history out there!
Chad, the history theme is great. You do a great job of mixing things up. Would love to see an episode that is sort of behind the scenes. For example, how you deal with van mainenance, laundry, trip planning, etc. Keep up the great work!
Living so remote, going to the near town should be a real event.
Awesome video as always Chad. These adventures to rediscover lost history it's so epic to walk around and through these places and wondering who lived there how they lived in that area. Thanks for letting us ride along with you on your adventures.
Man that time lapse at 26:02 had me getting emotional. So damn epic!
Feels good to be out of the snow storm and see some sunny living the van life!!
Butterfield had 3 rules on his overland stage coaches. 1. Men could not use or have grease their hair (dust), 2. No talk of Politics 3. No religious discussions or proselytizing.
Hahaha that’s an awesome fact!
Three good rules!😊 Smart man!
Could use those rules today.
Was Mat Dillon there
@@mikeoset3193 No, but Matt Damon sure as hell was!
Great episode. Love the history stuff.
Reminds me when I was there in my model A, pulled into one of those stagecoach stops and they didn't even have any gasoline, or any place for me to plug it in to get a charge. Had to push it all the way to the nearest town.
New Mexico is my home state. I would encourage you to get back this way and travel northern part of the
State. My area is from Santa Fe north, I think it’s the best part of the state. I came across your channel a few weeks ages ago. I have really enjoyed your videos. New Mexico has so much history
I think that old house would be lovely to fix up - living in the wide, quiet open space - heavenly.
Love from India🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳❤❤
Thank you Chad for this video. We would probably never get to see this part of our vast country if you didnt share it. I will say that i saw a bunch of chem trails in the sky. Also, those bones and teeth could one day become fossils. Amazing.
Thats wonderful 👍😊 very excited to see more 😊.
I miss Southern New Mexico. Please tell me you grabbed some green chile while you were there!
Absolutely
Loved the video Chad. Love the history. Loved in Fallon NV for a bit and it was part of the Pony Express route. You can still visit some of the station sites.
Love the history & the exploring bro. Please make more videos with the American history.
About 20 minutes in the Vid, mass massacre Canyon over by Fort Cummings you can see the graves on both sides of the trail. Cool you’re in our area. Jason from Silver city says hi.
Very enjoyable. Mix in some more of these.
Great exploring Chad!......Cheers.......Steve
Such a little fire compared to the norm. Might be worth getting a little Solo Stove Mesa XL that you could tuck into your other SS. I couldn't imagine trying to keep cattle in that environment, those poor cows have got to be miserable. That house was super cool! I love exploring stuff like that.
You pulled me in again. And your attention to detail is amazing.
Thank you .👌
By far the best exploration video channels that exists today....really enjoying your content and for sure its diverse . The best part is that you inspire others to go and do the same !
Glad to see you in my home state of NM… I was born and raised in Las Cruces… hope you got you some famous Hatch Chili for your instapot recipes
Flexing well!
Yes, very interesting, I'm Canadian, Live in B.C. and there is so much here to see, i'll never have enough time to see all the stuff in the USA
Amazing as always
Love your videos I couldn’t do what you do at such a professional level -congrats!! Hey I counted you using the word “here” 77+ times. Gets a bit old. 😅 keep the video coming I love them.
Awesome :) thank you for taking us along.
What an interesting desert would be epic to explore an area like this. The piles of rock indeed ive read is a burial. I loved seeing that old house wasn't that a cool find back in the day i bet it was gorgeous . Thanks for bringing us i found this interesting. I love history.
Nice one Chad. I like the way you compose on your subject with slow tracking shots letting the viewer absorb whats in the frame without you having to hog the frame relentlessly.
Thanks mate.
Very interesting 😎
Thank for sharing. I would love to do this as well. Looks like a great adventure 😌
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

That was an interesting trip. Thanks for sharing. I can’t imagine that I’d ever see that myself.
Your videos are works of art as well as a mix of history, geography and more. This theme was especially interesting. I am always delighted to see a new one posted.
Vallecito stage station in Anza Borrego in california is a stop on this trail. There is a grave site there as well as a super old building I've always wanted to check out this whole trail after visiting that site.. pretty cool to see you on it in another state!
Awesome video Chad! Definitely need more like this.
Nice seeing you out there with the sprinter. That was very interesting thank you.
Thanks again another wonderful video
My wife and I have a Promaster which we keep on the pavement, while vicariously living through your videos Chad. 😊 Love the content and videography. Enjoy the history, both yours and the land’s.
Awesome video Chad. I’ve never been to that part of the country. Thanks for taking us along and showing us the beauty of this place.
SidetrackAdventures Overland style! Enjoyed it
Awesome time lapses man!
Thank you very much for sharing! I've been watching you and "Off Grid Backcountry Adventures" and "Camping with Steve." God bless you guys!!!
Enjoyed this. I am from Southern New Mexico and loved the scenery and history. I am coming home soon and this made me homesick. Enjoy your time there.
Another fine video that i get to ride along on. I enjoy ones like this & the history is interesting. I like the way the drone flies along so we can see the hole area & where your traveling thru you do great with it. Interesting the old house out in the middle of no where yet well preserved still. Keep them coming it's my escape from life to set back and enjoy seeing places i'll never get too.
I love this format, definitely more of this!
Incredible content, Chad! Thoroughly enjoyed the history and how it was presented. Super impressed you were able to produce something just as interesting as your Alaska series. I feel like this year is going to be huge for you and your channel.
Putting out quality content mate. Keep it up!!
Great video Chad as always no snow you sure do push that sprinter to the edge stay safe
Please, please have more videos like this. This is one of the best episode
You are one of the best out there. Please keep going
Upon watching one of your latest videos I now own a small $25 Wal-Mart air fryer. Might be the best $25 I ever spent.
Wow that land is vast and beautiful. Kinda scary though you being the only one there. Thank you for showing us the beauty of the desert. Stay safe.
Love your organization skills.
Great footage, man! You captured the desolation of the desert perfectly!
Love seeing you explore historic locations! Please add campfire & dinner footage to the next one.
Interesting video. thanks!
AGAIN... The drone footage is my favorite part of the video 😁! It shows how sparse and desolate the landscape is and also how hauntedly beautiful it is! Exploring the old sites would be awesome, you would have to drag me away 😂!
Good evening Chad…..great upload, as ever …..Thankyou 👍🔥🇮🇲
great content man i love a bit of history especailly pertaining to the old west n stuff! 👍🤙🤘✊️
Love your pics and your music choice. Sounds awesome on my pair of JBL Boombox 2's!
I remember watching an old Death Valley show and they had a town rough and ready!!
This was an awesome video!
Great video ❤
Awesome video, loving it and being inspired all the way from the UK
3:39 I wouldn't miss your videos chad. Travelling in an adventure of mother nature and amazing scenic cinematography. 😎❤️🇵🇭
That house would be something Wonderhussey would love to check out😂 I love that you and your family would do these travels. So cool!
Amazing work Chad
I am a simple man, I see notification from Chad I click.
Same here.
Me too
The harsh reality of yesteryear. Well at least the rocks keeps the vultures away. Awesome video, peace.
Loved that. Interesting to see similarities with old Western Australian places like that. Love to hear more history
glorious cheers

Butterfeild mapped the route that avoided the Trail of Tears. Better weather.
I would love to do both. Not walking but can camping through the routes sounds like a real retirement road trip. Just disappear from NY , go exploring across the Trail of Tears route, shoot into Alaska for a spell (I’m tired of winter) then go down the west coast from Alaska to Mexico, then come back up and travel east following Butterfeild’s mail route. Stop in the middle, go up to Colorado, cut east across to in a zig zag 😂 spend some time in Texas (space stuff) travel all the way to Florida and spend some time in Florida (space stuff) then creep back up north to spend time with family before doing it again. ❤ those are my retirement dreams.
I love these videos.
I love this video please show us more historical sites thank you
Cool perspective I think most people would miss sticking to the beaten path. Those old bones, rocks and artifacts all do tell a story. Also, I love the dubstep music you set a lot of this video to...kind of reminds me of Deadmau5 ;-) Keep on truckin' Chad!
Another banger chad. My build is coming along. I’m hoping to be out hunting for adventure this summer.
Great vlog brother ❤
As always, wonderful content. We have a HDT with a heavy camper. I’m thinking of the uses for a sprinter…
We thought we have it rough. Thanks Don
Dope video
Really enjoy your videos Chad, so thank you for all the hard work.
Can you tell me about the pullout storage compartments in your garage. I'm interested in doing something similar.
Yea love the treasure hunting and more cooking on the fire please
100% i don't want anything to happen or damage your rig. But I am fully expecting you to crinkle it with your off road moves. More money than br.... But only my opinion. Keep on pushing it man. Free and fun to watch on my end.
Awesome episode, thanks for the excellent entertainment and inspiration. Wife and I wondering what happened to the dog you picked up a while ago? Cheers from Cape Town, South Africa
Chad have you ever gone out on the playa where they hold Burning Man. It’s cool😊 a lot of Indian artifacts.
💡👍Brilliant !!
