    Why didn't Fallon tell anyone he was cutting the red wire before cutting it? If Fallon cut the red wire and it went off, everyone would have assumed Fallon cut the blue wire and cut the red, dooming themselves and everyone on board.

      I haven't seen this clip since I saw the film at the cinema in 1974. What I remember about this film is him saying cut the blue, and he cuts red, another bloke getting blown up earlier, and as the bomb exploded, his face stayed there for a split second, and Roy Kinnear, thinking that he was hilarious. I remember him messing around with a table tennis bat. Er, and that's about it.

    1:41 - repeats with emphasis "CUT the blue wire". This repetition of the order, with that intonation, is what gives the game away. Fallon is just sitting there, pondering the first answer. How does Sid know with such total certainty that the blue wire has not yet been cut? The only way he could know this - again, with such total certainty - is that he has not yet heard an explosion. Fallon subconsciously realises this and knows he must in fact cut red. It is not a matter of pure luck, as many viewers may think. Great attention to detail by the screenwriter, who immediately follows this flash of genius up with a very basic error, as has been pointed out elsewhere: Fallon neglects to communicate his last minute change of heart to his colleagues. In the event of his having been wrong, at least one of them - and possibly all - would have been killed. Remember, the bomber is motivated by extortion, not 'terrorism', so there's no concern with the bombs having been constructed differently. The bomber wants money and does not wish to exacerbate his crime by needlessly adding murder to the charge-sheet and placing even more pressure on the police to find the culprit, and giving their investigation an even higher priority than it already has.
    Communication, Fallon: it's for life, not just for Christmas. But you're still the champion.

    • @konstantinopoulos33
      @konstantinopoulos33 3 года назад

      One issue with Fallon’s actions though is that he should have announced what he was going to do. This would obviously ruin the suspense, so not blaming them for not having him do that, but in practice of red had been the booby trap they might have thought blue was and all the others would also have been killed.

    • @cariboubearmalachy1174
      @cariboubearmalachy1174 3 года назад +1

      I disagree. If Fallon had started explaining his actions, he would have added confusion. Say "R-E-D Red!" and don't say anything else!

    • @NDorffin
      @NDorffin 2 года назад

      At the end, Fallon has to rely on psychology not expertise. As Buckland once saved Fallon's life he has the right to take it. Buckland is the one who changes the Goldfish water. So Fallon cuts the red line.

    Does anyone remember a 1986 episode of " Macgyver " where the story was almost the same ? In the end, Macgyver has to make an important decision. Does he cut the blue or yellow wire ? In the end he disregards the instructions of the criminal and cuts the wire that HE thinks will stop the bombing of the ship. In the end, Macgyver wins again !

  • @wildandbarefoot
    @wildandbarefoot 5 лет назад +11

    Whe juggernaut asks fallon to cut the blue, and there's no bang he knows it's not cut and so repeats the instruction, expecting the Bang. So, fallon cuts the red. It's logic, not intuition as some say here.
    Back in the day they didn't patronise audiences like they do today.... either you got it.. or still just thought it was a brilliant film.
    Fallon is the champion.

    I love this movie, but this ending scene has always bothered me. Fallon was not a careless man, yet after being told by Juggernaut, with everyone else listening in, to cut the blue wire, he instead, without telling anyone his plan ahead of time, cuts the red wire. Had that red wire proved to be the wrong choice and blown up Fallon's bomb, everyone else listening in would assume he cut the blue wire which detonated his bomb and therefore would cut their red wires, thereby blowing up all of their bombs and everyone on the ship. It was way too reckless and careless a move that just didn't make sense but made for great dramatic play. Other than that, the movie is flawless and a long time favorite.

    Great film, cast, script and story line all come together to create a first rate movie. One small quibble..when Fallon uses his instinct to cut the red wire rather than the blue as instructed (rightly so of course) he needed to communicate this to his team leader. But it all adds to the dramatic suspense of the scene, of course, which is what matters here as Fallon 'outwits' his old comrade Butland (Juggernaut).

      +George Buller Right. The opposite of what was said is "red." They all would have thought he cut blue and died, so they'd cut red, which is the right wire to cut. They'd be ok. I will grant you that I am now confused and haven't slept so I might be wrong. Haha

    Why didn't Juggernaut mix up the red and blue wires on the bombs, so you wouldn't know which colour to cut

    • @dacsus
      @dacsus 6 лет назад +4

      Because he only got vindictive in then end when the pay went wrong and they caught him. His life was over at that moment.
      Before? He was a fair guy. They pay the blackmail, he tells them how to defuse the bomb. He had to consider that the crew of the ship would have to defuse the bombs, he couldn't count on a bomb squad being at hand.
      If you watch the movie he only wanted what he considered a fair pension. He was bitter about the treatment he got and his pension. He risked killing people, but it was just business. He never wanted people to die.
      As I said, until the end when he faced the rest of his life in prison. That was the point where he didn't care about anything anymore.
