      Jack (the man of science and logic) and Locke (the man of spirituality and faith) have always opposed one another in terms of beliefs. Yeah, it's really heartwarming. Because he became a man of faith, he followed Ben back to the island and got Sun, Jin, and Sayid killed. Hell, he even got Jacob killed and then almost unleashed evil out into the world. Faith really got him places. But who cares about all those people who died and all the chaos and horrible things that happened. The important thing is that Jack found faith. Other people and the world be damned.

    It's NOT just about Jack losing Kate. It's about the weight of all the people who died that Jack either couldn't save or put in harms way in his one-track obsessive effort to get everyone saved (and off the Island). He wants to UNDO the harm that befell everyone with the crash of Oceanic 815. Even if it means never having known Kate. It's an expression of Jack's self sacrificial quality; he's willing to lose the most important relationship of his life.
    Sawyer is the other side of this. What's done is done. James became who he became...an actual leader who is shepherding (pun intended) others to safety. He's actually head of Dharma Security. All of that would NOT have happened but for the pains that he went through in his life. They made Sawyer become what he became the past 3 years with the DI.
    And this all goes back to an exchange btw Sawyer & Locke, when they were jumping through time. Sawyer asked Locke why (when they came to the time when John was banging on the hatch door confused, angry and feeling betrayed that Boone died) he didn't go tell himself what was going to happen and save himself the misery. Locke said that pain is what brought him to where he is, what made him who he is...i.e., the leader of the Others and someone who would be communicating directly with the mysterious Jacob.
    That exchange is why Sawyer doesn't get on the sub in 1974 and doesn't try to stop his father from shooting his mother or preventing Anthony Cooper from running the con on her.

    • @ko7577
      @ko7577 2 месяца назад +1

      Well the important thing is it's all about Jack. Sun, Jin, Sayid, and so many others died so that Jack could find abstract faith. It's almost as if he's willing to kill anyone around him just to find a little peace, even though compared to the other survivors, he lived a charmed life. Jack didn't need to find faith. He needed to find gratitude and stop using other people to make himself feel better.

    Jack was so confused in this scene. He doesn't even know what or why he's willing a to go through the plan of action. He puts the blame on Locke for his decisions. Sawyer really dug into his core intentions, and Jack admitted it. That Jack is doing it for himself because of Kate because he is miserable. Unlike Sawyer at this stage being happy and dandy by saying "Whats done is done."

    • @siso7274
      @siso7274 7 лет назад +5

      Peter Ton I do not think Jack was so confused. It was indeed Eloise who did all she could to make them return to the island, that same Eloise, who was a witness of all that had happened, and who took the risk in killing her own son AGAIN! I think Jack was convinced it had to be done, no matter what the outcome. And he was right in the end. The explosion of the H-bomb was able to neutralize the electromagnetic catastrophe that was about to unfold. If they landed in 70's, that was why...

    • @victorpradha9946
      @victorpradha9946 6 месяцев назад +1

      I would differ on two points--1) that Jack is confused. Jack truly believes in Faraday, the ultimate "man of science" who believes that the energy of Jughead's detonation may prevent the hatch from being built, which would mean Oceanic 815 never crashes on the Island (Joanna doesn't drown, Boone does die, Ana Lucia doesn't shoot Shannon, Michael doesn't kill Ana Lucia and Libby etc etc etc). It's NOT just about Kate. He says this to Sawyer because Jack thinks that Kate is a common denominator between the two of them. Jack believes that Sawyer has great affection for Kate and he also "lost" Kate. So Jack drills it down to a very person loss because he thinks that Sawyer sees the world "THAT WAY".
      2) It's NOT about Kate. It's about avoiding all the lives that were lost when Oceanic 815 crashed & all those who died after. It's Jack being able to in one fell swoop undo everything that he failed at--saving Boone, preventing Ana Lucia and Libby's death, avoiding the Marshall's death, Joanna's drowning, Claire's disappearance, etc, etc etc. And Jack's willing to sacrifice everything good that ever happened for him...Kate, the validation/status as the leader, beginning to feel like he has what it takes. It's later why Jack just quickly jumps up and accepts Jacob's job!

      It's irritating but perfectly understandable. I think these things happen in true love triangles all the time (I mean true in the sense that there's no real animosity between the 2 wanting the lucky person's affection for themselves). So you end up with this interesting dynamic where their cowardice has them confiding in each other instead of the 3rd person. Jack should've told her he still wants her as badly as he did in the beginning but he's become discouraged over whether he deserves her love. It's possibly why he told Sawyer first, hoping his response might give him some courage. I have no personal experience in this stuff so I may just be talking out of my ass

He also knew, that the Dharma people would be killed, so he and his friends had to look for rescue and alternative - sooner or later. Ben and Locke convinced or treated the Oceanic 6 to go back to rescue them ( every time they talked with Locke or Ben, it's said: you have to go back.) But real Locke was dead and they didn't know, that they returned in 1977. It was a difficult situation. @@verenamenzel4701 So true, "Lafleur" spelled it out for us what was going on with Sawyer. He said he'd wait 'as long as it takes' and you know he wasn't talking about Locke, it's KATE he was waiting for! And when he sees Amy's grief over Paul, he SO relates because he is feeling the same way. Just look at his face. (this episode is SO well-written and foreshadows SO much .. at the beginning Horace is drunk out of his mind and The Others are afraid he is "going to blow himself up!" Because Amy still loves Paul! He is JUST like Juliet, who, at the end of the season, really DOES blow herself up from jealousy!) Sawyer does the lying for the group because "I used to lie for a living". Then Juliet reminds him "the flashes have stopped." They're stuck in '70s Dharmaville. He has to work fast on Juliet unless he wants to be alone (or mate with a polar bear, as Josh H. said, lol). Sawyer turns on the charm and Juliet responds to it. Just the way Cassidy and countless others did. Three years later he is known as "LaFleur" to The Others, 'James' to Juliet (later the Others announce to Jack that Sawyer HATES being called 'James') but far from being satisfied with his Dharma life, he is actually "living a lie". We see him go up to Jin to ask if he found anything on the 'grid search' .. he is still hoping for Locke to bring back Kate. But I think the moment Juliet delivers that baby touches him, he has grown really fond of her, and I think this is when he starts to think about 'letting go' of Kate. Especially after talking to Horace, and realizing how much Amy's hanging on to Paul is hurting Horace. He's been doing the same thing with Kate. I feel like when he lies - as always - to Horace about 'being over' Kate, he is actually trying to convince himself. "this has gone on long enough". But then the next day, when he finds out Kate actually HAS returned, he lies to Juliet about it .. and then when he sees Kate his disguise (the glasses) comes off and he is just Sawyer again. Reunited with his lost love. Like Sawyer said to Kate in "What Kate Does", "it's not your fault she's dead. It's mine."

      yes, it's the classic "whatever happened happened" (Sawyer) vs. "I didn't think I could change anything. But now I think maybe I can" (Jack), and we saw this dichotomy in the person of Faraday. He changed his mind because of his love for Charlotte.

'Life is a road to go forwards and backwards, but you cannot build a new one.' Suddenly he thought we could. But we cannot rebuild our lifes. When Sawyer banged on the hatch to make Desmond come out .. and then Daniel said "no no you can't change anything" and Sawyer said "everybody I care about just blew up on that dam ship" of COURSE "everybody I care about" means KATE, because as soon as Daniel sees Charlotte's nose bleeding, he hightails it to Desmond's door to desperately try to change EVERYTHING to save Charlotte - the same way Sawyer will do ANYTHING to bring Kate back to him. The desperate measures he goes to! For Faraday it is ALL about Charlotte, and for Sawyer it is ALL about Kate. He's not ready to give her/them a chance, neither yet here nor after the time shift through the bomb. He's so obsessed to live and stay on this island, that' s his priority. But is that true love? For me, it seemes, Jack is still so stubborn as we saw it in the past. Sawyer developes much better.

    • @bertramsey
      @bertramsey 5 лет назад +2

      I think Jack felt that Kate has always loved Sawyer and she was only with him because Sawyer jumped. He also felt guilty because Sawyer jumped instead of him. Kate's attachment to Aaron and, by association Sawyer, drove him up the wall! But he loved her enough to try to overcome all that. Still his guilt over all the people left behind on the island finally got the better of him and he knew he had to go back and fulfill his destiny. It wasn't about him and Kate any more. This was bigger than both of them. Kate&Sawyer didn't understand, but Juliet did. And, in the end, Kate&Sawyer realized it too.

Go see her, let it grow by itself, you just need to be around her, close enough to get that chance. Be her sun when she's in need. The reason anyone has a chance with someone is because they're in each others lives. If they're not, how can you magically expect to get it? You need to cross lives, and keep being around. Kate loved Jack, but felt she was never good enough for the noble nature of Jack, never worthy of Jack. This comes from her realization that she is the biological daughter of Wayne. She's the product of a woman who deliberately chose to make her life with a loser drunk who beat his own wife AND spoke in a unseemly manner to his own daughter and the product of a disgusting pig of a man who took out his own feelings of worthlessness on a woman who doesn't value herself enough to get away from him. Mind you Kate's childhood father, the man who raised her...was a noble, honorable, dignified, decent man. Kind of like Jack. Kate chooses Sawyer a man she sees more as 'on par' with her. Sawyer at first comes off as a greedy, selfish, judgmental, crass, at times rather seedy individual. It's who Kate feels she measures up to.
      Jack is the heroic run into the burning wreckage, pull people out of danger, pour his own blood into dying patient, work tirelessly to the point of pure exhaustion to protect, safeguard and save those in his care. While Jack may be stubborn, and single-minded at times, Kate saw with her own eyes, it's aimed at saving lives. This stubborn single-mindedness saved Charlie's life. Kate gave up. Jack did NOT!
      Jack fought to get the Oceanic survivor's rescued...even as Widmore sent a search and destroy, scorched earth team to the Island. Kate loves Jack...with him she felt elevated and exonerated from the ghosts of her past, the accumulated sins of her previous nature. That's why she could NOT stand Jack's suspicion of her, his skepticism towards her, his distrust of her word. It reminded her of how she first felt when she began to have genuine feelings for Jack.
      It was ALWAYS Jack in her heart. She settled for Sawyer. But when she talked with Sawyer that night in the Dharma barracks just before Keamy's hit squad arrived, Kate realized she had ZERO future with Sawyer. When she cried when Sawyer revealed he was preparing to propose to Juliet, she tried for both the fact that her engagement with Jack was broken and that such a thing was NEVER in the cards for herself and Sawyer. She also felt immense guilt that Jack & Kate and Hurley and Sayid came to the Island and blew all that up.

Kissing a dead patient's daughter right after he dies - or kissing her back - would in today's world get his medical license revoked and have him on the front page as "perv doctor." Even more disturbing, this happened in the hospital parking lot. It's not romantic. It's not a gray area. It's against AMA ethics and would actually have gotten him fired from the hospital with his license revoked. As for Sarah, he began hitting on her right during her surgery, it was obvious. That also was unethical and led to a trauma bond. That was the same 20 years ago as it is now. Both are a pattern of behavior that shows he's not a great guy. He's a shit. Also, the last time I checked, kissing someone "back" while you're married is cheating lol How sweet of him to admit it (who cares? He's already insufferable to live with, this just confirmed that she was right to begin ending it). Not everyone has time to deal with a 41 year-old man's daddy issues.
      Accept reality instead of letting your emotions control you during what amounts to a daytime soap opera set on an island. Just because Jack is pretty doesn't mean he's ethical, sane, or nice. He was a brooding, spoiled shit who was red flag central across the board with everyone he dealt with, a pimp-type character who slaps a woman one minute but gives her a 5-minute "We all get a second chance" speech the next minute and then goes back to criticizing her the next minute. The situation was that Kate would take Jack back in a heartbeat if he only would have the courage to ask her.
    The thing about Juliet is that she was the best thing for both Sawyer and Jack. They both fell for Kate but they came to realize that they would really only feel uncertainty, insecurity and constant suspicion with her.
    But with Juliet, they knew it's so much more better. She gives them both things that they both desperately need. Stability, security and true happiness. That's why Goodwin fell for Juliet because when he was with her, he was completely content. He felt truly happy and safe with her. He didn't have that with his wife Harper. He had an controlling wife so he was looking for a way out of his marriage to something more better.
