- Kiln opening & sharing my glaze pairings! (Episode 2!)
Episode 2 of the kiln opening series! In this series I share some of my favorite glaze combos and see how many cool results (and failures) we can find together. Filming this series is so fun for me and hopefully fun and informational for you.
I would love to know what your favorites are so I can repeat them! If you have any questions, put it in the comments! I read and answer all of them 😀
Thanks for joining me here and I’ll see you in the next one!

Thanks!
Just stumbled across your channel and loving your combos. What makea it even more enjoyable is that I use a lot of the same Mayco glazes, lovw experimenting but you mentioned a few combos ive not yet tried. Thanks for the inspiration. Also really enjoying your style of editing yoir footage. Great work!
👏🤗
First - the hiccup was a cute addition. Once again, what you are achieving with your glazing experiments is remarkable. Thanks for sharing an inside look at your process.
I'm so glad you liked it! I appreciate you watching 😊 😊
These are amazing!! The first piece is stunnning!!
👏🤗
Hey hey! Just so you know, crazing is usually food safe :) I recently talked to reps from Mayco and Coyote and both shared that fun fact with me. So long as you fire to vitrification and the glaze itself is food safe. Was excited to learn that bc I love the crazing look too so figured I'd share :)
❤️it!
Bacteria get stuck in between ten cracks so I would keep food away from crazing
@@____Ann____ Hey there! Here's what the rep from coyote glaze said when I inquired as to food safety and crazing: As long as the clay body was properly fired according to its specifications (i.e. if it is a ^5
body and was fired to at least a witness cone 5) it should be perfectly
safe for food use. Crazing is, in my mind, not a food safety issue as
much as an aesthetic one. Some folks prefer a crazed look, some folks
avoid it like the plague. If you've ever popped into a diner, even a
Denny's or an IHOP, and had a cup of coffee, you've probably noticed the
insides of their mugs are crazed, stained, even grey/black from all the
spoon scraping of the sides. As long as you're washing the mug in hot
soapy water, or in a dishwasher, it will be sanitized property and any
bacteria that may want to hug in the cracks will perish just the same as
the rest.
The glass that was fired isn’t food safe if that’s the one you are talking about. It’s more about little shards of glass breaking off and ending up in food.
@@sandiebrown9521 True! I was referring to food-safe glazes crazing since she mentioned she likes the crazing effect :) not referring to melting shards of glass to get crazing, which I'm sure is not food safe
Thank you for sharing 🇨🇦❤️
Of course! Thanks for watching :)
Hey these are all gorgeous! I can't pick a favorite because I like them all.
LOL, your turkey call cracked me up, love your antics lol. Omg how cute, the squeaky hiccup! Yup that's me too. The bubble effect you can also achieve with soap too I think........just put some in underglaze. I did that for a couple small pieces, but I would probably just buy a bottle of bubbles and glaze first then do the bubbles and see how that works. I love art, fascinating stuff!
💪🏺
Thanks for watching!
i would love to see you do some Raku stuff! would be really interesting to see
Noted 📝👏
Oh my goodness your creations are beautiful
I'm so glad you like them!
The glass crackle looks like the streets of a city from above, really cool effect!
👏👏👏
Awesome! From Brazil ❤️🇧🇷
Very pretty and interesting pieces. Good Job
Thank you! Cheers!
Aww!!! A Mrs. Potts tea pot!
Hey Marlaina, almost all of those pieces are beautiful enough to take one's breath away; really amazing. I like the ones with the crackled and distressed texture the most. Purple and orange/red can sometimes go well together. Have you ever done an Obvara firing?
I have not! What even is that?
@@Marlaina_thepotterylady Haha, well if you don't know what it is then I will tell you what it is! Obvara is a firing technique like Raku but the middle step is quite different and the ceramic piece is unglazed. Instead of immersing the fired vessel in sawdust etc like in Raku the piece is dunked into a premixed fermented mixture consisting of flour, yeast, sugar and water and then it is placed in water for a short time. As you can guess the piece is not food safe but really beautiful; creamy tans, browns, whites and black with a textured surface. It is of European origin, some sources say Eastern European while others say Baltic Europe, from roundabout the 12th century. Marcia Selsor is the leading authority on the Obvara firing tecnique. Pls, have a look on the Net at some Obvara ceramic pieces and see if they appeal to you.
Lovely pieces. Regarding the Mayco Shino under sand and sea….in the video, it looks very neutral and in the still photos, it has a blue tinge…how would you describe it IRL? Thanks! Also, the teapot is amazing.
Thank you so much! And yes it’s very neutral - I would describe it as a pastel sea-mist blue with spots of warm browns on the edges. It’s very light and bright
@ thanks for responding!
Where can you buy the potters ink pad ?
You can find it on "Euclids pottery store" and also on Amazon! Just look up "potters pad"
When you reglaze a piece and heat it before glazing. The heat doesn't make the piece absorb it faster. The piece is vitrified, so it can't absorb any moist. The heat helps the water evaporate faster.
And your video would be a lot more interesting if you could actually tell wich glaze you used 😉
Just found you!🎉
Welcome to the channel! 🤗
Which company makes Orange Red glaze, Coyote? Thank you
The Chicago Ceramic Supply 👏 (in Elkgrove IL)
