I have done a run like this a few months ago and it works great but you have to ground the AI for it to work well. What I did was to input a set of rules like: - I want a balanced team - make sure to think about HMs - only give definitive answers not suggestions You need to correct the AI on the first inputs as well and it will remember. … Then I was simply asking it simple inputs like “I just done this - what should I do next” or “what Pokémon should I catch next” You also need to update it on your team and its levels from time to time. It’s pretty cool then you can use the same chat history in future play through so it remembers what you done.

I suspect there were a few things that tripped the AI up: -It’s mostly based on scraping text data, when video would be really helpful for determining orientation and what not. -Although there are progression blocks at points in the game, it is fairly open, thus there is some flexibility in how you approach things. -The game has been remade multiple times. None of that explains everything, but it does go a fair way.
I used chatgpt to play randomized black 2, and it gets confused sometimes, but nowhere near the degree in this video. The worst thing it does consistently is not think about defensive typing when telling me which pokemon to send out. I'm a novice when it comes to Pokemon, but it gives tons of info about stats and weaknesses backing up all its decisions, and genuinely helped me learn a lot
The reason for its obession with water may be that you use the word "blue" so frequently (since you have to remind it that the game you're playing is Pokemon Blue)
Idea, Take a screenshot of the game every 0.5 seconds then pause the game ask ChatGPT 4o what button presses should be done then after ChatGPT 4o says the button inputs unpause the game play the inputs repeat till a crash or end of the game.

You shouldn't have to specify Pokemon Blue every time and it doesn't really remember, it's rereading the chat. When you send a new prompt in the same chat, you're sending the whole thing back. I'd recommend starting a chat by saying something like "I'm playing Pokemon Blue and using your steps to make major decisions. Format your responses in this template: Decision: Reasoning:" You can play around with whatever format you want but there's a ton you can do to get what you're looking for. You can also probably request a confidence rating to see how confident it is that it has the correct answer or tell it to respond a certain way if it doesn't have a good answer

Or did I just get unlucky and got corrupted save files like 5 times in a row and should try again until I get a working copy? (Again sorry but Reddit and stuff says nothing about it so I’m assuming someone like you is my best option to figure it out; I wanna relive my childhood with a physical copy again)
