Thanks Max, loving these videos. I'm a mid 60s model welder/fabricator who dicks around in a small shed with a lathe and mill. I think I owe you a few cartons for all the knowledge I have gleaned from watching your repairs. Keep em coming for all your apprentices.
Max, this video was great, but it brought back memories of one of our German plastic pipe welding machines that had a messed up square thread shaft, i worked on this shaft for 2 days doing what you did and got the machine running, 2 months later the machine was returned to our factory in Germany, and they replaced the shaft with a ball screw. my German colleague sent me the old shaft for a birthday present and i still have it, square threads suck, Thanks as always for the video.
Knowing the first procedure can make a big difference in the outcome. No need for steady rest. Shims very useful need stainless for parting tool myself. Cobalt always a machinist friend. Having those large machines keeps you at the cutting edge.
The square thread and pitch on those 'tractor parts' reminded me of the threads on old school shoring jacks that were used in trenches decades ago. Looking forward to Pt 2 :)
That Bird Scarer keeps on giving Max, nicely done ✔️. As a skinny apprentice, working a Holbrook lathe, there was a strap around the tailstock to hook over the carriage to tow it, obviously simple to push it. I could not physically move it. Thanks for sharing.
Me, too. Back in the late 60's, I worked on a big Holbrook as apprentice to a big Polish man, who would tight the tailstock quill clamp with his finger, and invite me to untighten it. Not turning, but grinding hobs. Nice machine.
Yep another great video, & full of learning opportunities. I wouldn’t complain if they were longer in length. 👍 Nice start to a Saturday morning watching a SVMS video early & in peace. It has been unusually cold & wet here in Perth this August that’s for sure, colder than a mutha in laws kiss. Dunno about you but my feet feel the cold on the concrete floor of the shed in this weather, and give me gypper. Grow walnut trees on that 9 acres. 😉👍
Last week you treated us with a coat on in the shop, this week a shot of rain which we haven’t seen in quite a while. Add to it a great video and it’s made for a great evening in Texas. Thanks Max.
There were other chances to notice, even on the last video when you took the specs to level the lathe, or any of the other videos that I now recall where you wrote; you are a southpaw. I share said orientation as well. Thanks for sharing and showing, Max.
Hi Max, nice job. The operators would have been plagued with mud, sand and grit getting between the threads and having to hastily set it up. Our riggers used to throw our square thread scaffold leveling screws into a 44 gal drum of oil ready for use.
FFS Max an Aussie complaining about the pissing rain, gimme a break you sound like a brit, Oh and a 9 acre garden, poor you, plant some stuff or grow some cows. Nice work as usual Best wishes, Mal
I don't think Max was complaining too much. Being in the SW region near Perth he should be blessing the rain as it will probably be the last time it really rains until the following hot dry Summer is over, and there probably will not be any spare water available to keep the "lawn" green and alive during that time. Those threads reminded me of some components of aluminium building scaffolding, and that type of scaffolding can really cop a hiding at times.
Max, love the show, enjoy watching, some great content, thx! Umm... could you put your mike a bit further from your nose, the whistling is somewhat distracting.
All the filmed work is pre quoted so any time filming & editing does not alter the price . Filming can easily add 5 or 6 hours onto something like a 2 or 3 hr job . 👍
Hi Max, nicely done mate. I look forward to part 2. Thanks for the video mate, best wishe's, Stuart Uk.
Cheers 👍

Lol , wait until you have to cut a 7/16 one 2 feet long ! 👍
Nice detective work there. Looks like that is some welcomed rain seeing you don't get very much of it. We are dry as a bone here in our summer.
I think we went about 9 months straight last year with no rain . 👍

G'day Max. The collar certainly did the trick. Job well done chasing the threads, especially when the part screwed on to the intended length.
Cheers Ted . 👍

Hi Max, nice job.
The operators would have been plagued with mud, sand and grit getting between the threads and having to hastily set it up.
Our riggers used to throw our square thread scaffold leveling screws into a 44 gal drum of oil ready for use.
No worries . It sits in a separate anti recoil housing & has springs around it . 👍
Great video. Thanks
No worries 👍
Measuring that pipe end is where a snap gage is great. As long as it has the range anyway.
No worries 👍
Skillful on repairing❤
Thanks 👍
Thx for the vid.
No worries 👍
You could make a cool spyglass/telescope with a 80pitch multistart thread 🤔
Lol , that would be interesting ! 👍
Nice job. .
Thanks 👍
A happy medium: Spiritualist with $50.
Cheers 👍
i do love a good square=acme!

Lol . Yes , oil buffer / recuperator for a tractor !!! 👍

Interesting project. Is it possible that the tube has a sleight bend in it?
The tube was pretty straight for an 85 year old hacked up part . Cheers 👍
> nice going there max. from the armchair comment dept. - slather with anti seize and then marinate with a couple refrigerated nz steinlagers.
Lion Brown ! 👍

@@swanvalleymachineshop Thought you guys were all convicts....unlike us pure bred Kiwis :)
@@bondie9150 Lol , Manufactured in Wellington ! 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop Grand old English blood it is then !
nice repair max!
If one of those tubes had been slightly bent,
would have been a serious problem I think?
I wonder how you solved that?
cheers
ben
Lol , i am glad they were straight . They would have to be re tubed if that was the case . Cheers 👍
You could re-round the tube thread by careful use of a vice jaws and digital callipers?
It would be too much hit & miss . 👍
I may be wrong but the inside of that tube looked pretty rusty.
Very rusty ! They tried to sandblast what they could . 👍
👍
Cheers 👍👍👍
Max, love the show, enjoy watching, some great content, thx! Umm... could you put your mike a bit further from your nose, the whistling is somewhat distracting.
I don't wear a mic , i just use my mobile phone . Thanks 👍
I take it this is more parts for the tractor that goes bang? :)
Lol , yes ! 👍
9:43 wouldn't taking your measurements at the collar on the other end be most accurate?
Needed to know how much out of round the end was . 👍
what was the approx time for repair
All the filmed work is pre quoted so any time filming & editing does not alter the price . Filming can easily add 5 or 6 hours onto something like a 2 or 3 hr job . 👍
Big Screw !!
Big hollow screw ! Cheers 👍
was the 'Tractor" made at Chamberlains or is it a foreign import?
No , a lot were made by GMH in the Eastern states back in 1940 ish . Google 2 lb anti tank gun . 👍
Stop hogging the Rain too Driest year on Record in SW Victoria ☔
Lol , no worries ! I think we went 9 months without it last year . 👍
