When installing the transducer you can buy this kit that has a plastic block and some screws. The whole purpose of this is that if you need to move the transducer you don't have to put more holes in your boat. You put the block on with four screws and some adhesive and then you attach the transducer right to that. I have seen both that look like swiss cheese in the back from people moving the transducer all over the place.

If you mount the transducer on the side where the prop goes down, commonly the starboard side in a single engine set up, that transducer will work well over 40 MHP because cavitation is less there.

I love both my Garmin 94sv units. I believe in redundancy and run one for navigation the other for sonar. Amazing difference from my early 2000 era electronics. I also used a four foot level under the hull to help get my transducer exactly inline with the hull, and not cocked up or down. I hold bottom at any speed.

OK so I always installed them slightly above or online with the underside of the hull simply because at high speeds if the water depth drops off its too late to react anyway. So to prevent any motor problems with air bubbles or even cavitation used a higher position. When you are slow enough to read the depth behind the boat the sender is easily under the waterline.

Another tip is to use a Philip screw driver bit to put a small countersink on the hole so the gel coat is less likely to chip out when running the screw in.

    • @muc4149

🤔 Attaching to the boat is not a must do. I keep a second transducer on an extension pole. I can change the position to reflect its purpose, and even side scan by rotating the pole. It stores in a rod rack when not in use, has a lighter plug for a 12v receptacle, and/or its own lawn mower battery in an ammo can. I can reach out about ten feet from boat, dock or bank, and even peek underneath the boat using this set-up 🙂 it's portable and backs up the other fixed mount Garmin.
Drift boats have 'special-needs'🙂 Bankies do too.

Another great video Aaron👍. Perfect timing, as I was looking at a new Garmin setup. I have a suggestion, how about a video on setting up gages that I have had fixed from GaugeSaver’s. These are mercury 2006 135 verado four stroke and I am having a problem getting them set up. Seems to be reading the engine (rpm, temps and oil pressure) ok, but the other items are not working (gas level, fuel used, distanced traveled etc etc). They looked the same as the ones from your mpg video. Hope you could help out. Thanks 😊 David. Stay safe and happy boating.

Excellent. This video is right on time. I'm looking to mount my first fish finder on a sailboat this weekend, and I was not sure from the supplied instructions about the transducer mounting specifics such as depth and orientation.
Any suggestions for a sailboat application where heel angle mean that the transducer is seldom aimed straight down underway? The auxiliary outboard is off center - meaning that I can mount it directly on the centerline.

    • @BornAgainBoating

Sailboats can be tricky, youll just have to look at how your hull is and go off the basic general rules about the aerated water :)

Thank you so much for making these videos. I am an old sailboat guy converting over to powerboats- I have found I love deep sea fishing! I had a question about drilling the holes. I’m sailboats, I was always taught to oversize the holes going into wood, epoxy fill them and re drill using the correct size to prevent core damage from water seeping in over time. Is there any reason that this could not be done as well in poweboating? Thank you for your reply and keep these awesome videos coming !

    • @BornAgainBoating

Using 4200 by 3M, and that depends in lefthand or righthand engines for your prop wash. Or well aerating the water before it gets to the prop. Try to get it at least 12 inch away from the prop. But its not always possible
