Noosa Offshore kayak fishing tournament 2017

- Опубликовано: 31 янв 2017
- Noosa comp time! The Palmy Blitz comp got moved due to bad weather so Noosa was the first kayak fishing tournament of the year and it didn't disappoint. For the past 3 years it has had the most consistent good weather and plenty of fish zipping around. This year was more of the same with Velvet blue water at 26ºish and a day clearing up for blue skies for the most part of the day.
I had plenty of hits but just could not hold on to the fish, no Spanish or Spotties made it to the boat but I was gifted a great Dolphin Fish for my trouble which had me smiling back on the beach.
There was some great catches with 2 Spanish Mackerel going over the 130cm mark and reports of a tussle with a Black Marlin. Big thanks to the AKS crew for putting on such a great event and congratulations to the winners and all the fellow competitors.
This video reaches new levels of me crapping on to the camera so feel free to let me know if your enjoying the talking or any constructive critics in the comments below... If anyone actually reads this stuff :)

Your videos are probably the most entertaining and well constructed home-made fishing videos on RUclips Rod, great work
I don't know about that but thanks! Will keep at it.
It's because he keeps his poise. And doesn't go on and on about everything. Just realistic fishing the way I like it.
@@rokkitkit Been enjoying your videos during this strange time. I hope you and your family is well and a new job is around the corner. Stay positive. - Eddie in NC, USS
I love watching the tournaments, I sit there scrolling through your vids to find these
Listening to your comments on the latest live stream Rod - this is my favourite kind of vid. The whole experience, trip to, tactics, competition and all. Love it.
Can't believe I just discovered this channel, love the content.
I like your honest and simple style fishing videos. Keep them coming mate🐟🎣🍺🐪💓👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Much love Rod thanks for being such an inspiration! So humble and entertaining 🙌🏼💖🌊
Hey man I really like your channel. You have inspired me to get back into fishing.
Watched 3 videos so far and man I love your channel. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Really enjoy watching your videos bud. Great content, easy to watch, interesting and full of beautiful scenery. Thank you :D
Nice vid Rod, good to see you in front of the camera talking more about your journey and the sport. Always enjoy your vids and keep up the great efforts. cheers.
Thanks Jamie, yea so far feedback is positive, will keep at it. Cheers Rod
Really enjoy the down to earth vibes when explaining the comp, and the kayak fishing community in general. Makes me encouraged to give it a shot! Hoping to make the trip down from Brisbane to Palm Beach to see the pros at work sometime soon
Thanks Richard, Yea give one of the comps a go for sure, the perfect place to get to know more of the guys and pick up some tips.
Yet another reason why I (and most everyone here I presume) subscribe to your channel Rod - the longer video and chat time is great! Keep up the brilliant work. Great catch with the mahi mahi too - jealous haha!
As always, fun vid! Watching you wait for the perfect gaff shot on the Mahi made me chuckle since it's the reason I favor my hook gaff over a spear gaff. Also, every time I watch one of your videos it makes me want to go test out a Stealth kayak! Good thing I'm broke or else the Mrs would complain about me ordering another yak!
sweet wrx mate love the channel man keep those lines wet!!
Nice video once again. Keep em coming!!!
I Always enjoy your vids mate. The chat is great, keep doing what you're doing. Tight lines.
Thanks for the feedback mate.
Awesome. Now to convince the missus i need a Stealth too.
yea, good luck with that... you really do need it though :)
I wish we on big Island had a group of kayak guys to meet and maybe camp out. Great video love em keep em coming.
Yep always cool to have a nice group of guys launching and out on the water
sick content mate, loved the edit and everything, also nice dolphin fish :)
Great video mate... well done!! I'm an Aussie kayak fisher living in the UK for past 16 years but looking forward to moving back home in 2019. Can't wait to get into kayak fishing when I return! Your vids are really inspiring!
I'm a new subscriber for sure! Thanks again for your efforts mate.. keep it up!!
Tight lines!!
😎👍 Dave.
Thanks mate, good luck getting back into the fish👍
Very nice video man! I really like how you have your kayak Rigged and all your rod and reel combos look great!
Cheers mate, yea all my Rod and Reel combos have to be able to take a beating in the saltwater :)
Nice bro... You are the best... Pro kayakman
great video! you have a very good camera presence so the talking bits are fine. it also allows the viewers to get to know you as well😀. would be interesting to see a 30 second clip of how you make your rigs? 👌👌👌👌👍
Thanks mate, yes will work on a rig vid soon. Cheers Rod
Why do you not have 100 plus thousand subs?? You totally deserve it
One day i hope... Im a slow burner hopefully. I can't post as often as Id like but over time Im hoping to get there.
Awesome video! The longer the better! Hello from Texas!
Cheers mate, yea i was worried it would be too much of me just talking... response seem positive so far.
No, the more you speak of your journey the better. But you make great videos don't change anything other than different days with different fish.
love the longer videos mate!!! keep them up :)
Will do, thanks!
Love the talking bits personally. Definitely adds to the video IMO. I keep saying it, but that dollie really is a beautiful fish- next time the blue water comes in nice and close I'll have to see if I can manage one for myself!
Cheers Owen, I wouldn't have minded the monster Spanish you got on the day either :) Good luck in the hunt.
Haha, cheers rod- The big ones are waiting for you at Adder!
Good post! I'm up here in Okinawa Japan, and would love to see more Kayak fishing tourneys.
Thanks for watching the vids, There is a few tournaments coming up over the next month.
And the talking isn't bad, it's just as exciting as the fishing. I always read the description
Thanks mate, and thanks for the feedback on the talking helps me know I'm on the right track.
Enjoyed it & liked the talky bits.
Thanks Patrick!
Nice Video.. beautifull fishing..!! Thanks for up this video.
Thanks for watching!
This is my second kayak of this model. It's a very nice and very well built kayak.
Another great video. 👍
Thanks Frank!
Well done. This yank lived in Noosa in 1986. If you ever get to the states look us up on Orcas island, Washington
cheers mate, yea Noosa is great, always enjoy fishing up there 👍
Awesome vid mate!
Thanks mate!
Wicked vid!
Good luck mate ^^ 👍 and its very good for kayak fishing people. Also can upload beach or surf fishing because I'm very interesting that
Thanks Mate, ill keep at it.
longer format, yay! lots of knowledge to gain just from listening to the camera chit chat and watching the prep. dope vid as usual, if you aren't getting paid to edit film you should be.
Thanks mate, Im do spend a lot of time on the computer doing Graphic/product design as my job... just started mucking around with the editing after I got into kayak fishing and brought a GoPro to play with... who knows in the future, would love to do more editing and fishing for that matter. Cheers Rod
RoKKiT KiT for sure, def a trained eye, and a good one. waiting for the day the rest of youtube finds you! inspiring work for sure. nice soobie btw.
Hey @roKKiT KiT! Your videos are amazing. I have to agree on Key West Kayak, your longer videos are amazing. :) Keep up the good work! I do have a quick question for you. I was wondering what the mount and arm is for your camera. I know the wire is the external battery. Just wondering on your attachment :D
Nice video, good job!!! keep it coming lol
Thanks mate, yep more in the pipe line.
Nice dolly maye!
Nice vid, as always. I really envy you...in a good way, of course...
Cheers mate!
Another great vid mate, the Mahi would certainly taste good and be a welcome catch, your in car shots reminded me of the way they set up the 'in car' shots on Top Gear. I was over at Moreton recently and ended up surrounded by small schoolie type Mackeral whilst snorkelling. I've also had a shot at those 'scum' lines off PBR as you may have seen some really small fish lurking in them....
Hey Vaughan, yea was nice to have Mahi on the table was gone in 1 day! Moreton is a great place hey, were you snorkelling at he wrecks?
Ill send u a message on where I was snorkelling ;)
Hey mate love your videos looking to get a heavier set up what rod reel braid and leader do you use
Nice, man. Always.
Cheers Fred, will be in contact soon.
you have almost convinced me to fish offshore watching your rad vids, love it dude.👍
Do you ever go creek bashing?
Yep get out there mate, Im sure your be into it. Yea I like to fish any where I can but tend to gravitate to offshore on the kayak... am starting to do a bit more inshore and had a few cracks at bass in some local canals but still lots to learn thats for sure. Cheers Rod
Awesome vid,
Thanks for checking it out mate!
Really enjoy the longer format. Cool to see how the other half fishes. I also sent you a follow up message if you can check it out. Thx.
Hey Steve, yea response has been positive which is great, will keep at it. Got your message and still on board for sure. Bear with me while i get it together :)
Alright. No rush. I see you've been busy fishing. And probably editing. Just let me know. Thx.
Key West Kayak Fishing can you check out my channel
great vid as always mate. That drive to Noosa is never fun
Yea... you get to the pine forest and its gets your hopes up but it just keeps going :)
love it
HAHA... raining and a hangover...... great vid bruz
Ha, perfect youtube recovery time!
Nice! I reckon the more talking you do the better because I can learn more things like how you compare the tail of the pillies etc. Can you do a video on the rigs you use? I've tried trolling hard bodies with no success and want to give trolling baits a go! Thanks mate
Thanks for the feedback, yea looks like the rigs videos has to happen soon... by far to most request video recently. Will give it a crack when time allows.
I think me an Australia would would fit nicely. How hard is it to move there?
It might not be about winning, but ... did you place? Nice fish. live your videos, watch them religiously! I fish out of a yak in Vic, can only wear shorts once or twice a year 😉
No place this year! We where having a good time fishing and although doable we knew it would be a bit of a stretch to make it in before weigh in so Ant (a mate) and I decided to not to make weigh in and enjoy the day, so no fish caught could be counted. If i had weighed in I would have been around 5th place, I think... Ant would have won if he had a camera and made weigh in! So like I said its not about winning :)
Thanks for watching the vids, yea we don't get too many months of cold weather here thats for sure. Cheers Rod
Love Noosa. Go every year around easter time. This year was a bit shady cause of the cyclone but still managed to pull a few decent ones out. How fast do you reckon you are trolling? (in knots)
Yea Noosa a is a great spot, lots of fishing options too. I average around 8-9kms so around 4.3knots.
thanks for that 🤘
nice video mate as always.. just wondering if you could do a video on the rig you use and how to rig a pilly up.. im keen to chase some macs at palmy 😎 cheers mate keep up the good work
Yep, will work on a rig video soon
RoKKiT KiT awesome mate cant wait cheers
Top catch in the yak mate. Can u give me a heads up to the stick and overhead real used on that dolphin. Looks like something I am trying upgrade to with the nice tip but strong but. How did u go in the comp?
The rod and reel used was the Penn Torque 30 Stardrag, Penn Powercurve Reload 15-20kg rod. This rod has plenty of lift and the action is still medium/light but if you want a nice light tip check out the 10-15kg Gx2 uglystiks. This what I have been using on a lot of my other setups.

nice man, you should show us bits of the prize giving... will be nice to see prize winning fish and winners
Yea I always planed to but the two cameras on the kayak ran out of power on the paddle back, plus I got in after everyone had weighted in so missed most of the action. Also I kind of dropped the ball a bit when it came to filming when I got back in... will definitely get some good footage next time :)
aaah damn, cool man!
cool vids!!!
Would you recommend a pedal kayak or one with an electric trolling motor?
awesome love youre vidz
Thanks Mate!
Nice kayak!
Thanks Mate! Yep, she's a fancy fishing ski for sure.
Hey man what size slammer 3 is that
Parabéns pelo dourado
Incredible footage! Quick question, what size paddle do you use on your Stealth? Keep up up the awesome work! Always look forward to your vids!
Thanks Austin, my paddle is 210cm. Cheers Rod
Thank you Rod :)
Always nice watching your videos, keep them coming.
Why do you put a weight on top of your bait, doesn't that cause it to swim up side down?
I'm use the the weight going on the bottom of the bait, on your lead hook.
Yea I run a lot of my baits upside down to avoid belly blow out and to make them stand out more against the light surface.
How do you decide when to run your bait up side down, when targeting different species, light conditions, water viz?
It is something that I have never seen so find it very interesting and keen to try it here in ZA.
Here if your bait doesn't swim 100% your chances of hooking up is not good.
This video has a crazy amount a views compared to your others because the title picture is an amazingly large colored fish! I know it’s dumb but that’s what gets ppl clicking! And your content is too good and interesting for your vids not to be BLOWING up. Maybe post a little more click-bait cover pics for the videos?? I want everyone to see this channel honestly!!
Kewl vid... I'd luv to be able to put the Prowler on the roof like that.... I need to turn Hulk green lol
Yep the Profisha is nice and light, 19kgs!
Hey Rod
How many meters of 30lb braid you squeeze onto your Spinfisher 4500?
Shot maaaaate
I dont have a 4500 SpinfisherV but I have a Slammer 3... i cant really remember but I would have thought about 180-200m
RoKKiT KiT
Lol yeah mate no sponsor here so its handline whole day😂😂😂
I have a vw Gti and am in need of a roof rack, I really like yours what kind of rack is that?
Thule racks. Aero bars i think..
Great video mate. What kind of roof rack set-up are you running for your car? I like it!
Cheers Mate, My roof racks are Thule Aero Bars with Lock racks attached. The Lockracks are pretty cool no need to use starts and harder to steal the kayak. Check them out here: lockrack.com.au
Just noticed a typo... "Straps" not "starts" Cheers Rod
Cheers Rod.
About to join the life
hey rokkit kit i was just wondering if you knew anything about the dragon pro fisher 2.8 fishing kayak, If its any good. also love your vids
Hey mate, I have not paddled one of the Dragon kayaks before but have paddled many plastics around that length so I am guessing it will be much the same. Should be good for a first kayak but depends on what kind of fishing you keen to do, it definitely more suited for inshore work. I would go for something longer (around 4m) if your thinking offshore. Not to say it can't be done as I started on a 2.4m BCF special and took it out to the reef plenty of times... but not really ideal. Let me know if you have more questions and Ill do my best to help. Cheers Rod
thankyou and it is for a bay targeting whiting and snapper
Look for the dragon hunter 4m
Great upload mate I really enjoy watching them , I would be shitting it out there it must take some guts .👍🏻
Thanks mate, I get caught up in the fun of it and don't bother thinking about anything that could go wrong... She'll be right :)
RoKKiT How are you liking the Slammer 3 reel?
Yea the Slammer 3 is now my Spin reel of choice... I will be replacing all my SpinfisherVs and the Clash with them from here on. The reel is better in most ways but the biggest game changer is the IPX6 seals... on the kayak the reels gets a dunking almost every trip.
Where did you get your battery from and how much did it cost
I got my battery from MX store and it cost about $160
Your icemule coolers is it the 23 liter?
The big grey fish bag is the 42" one. The small blue cooler bag is 15lt.
do you need 1 of these fancy kayaks for these fishing comps , i just got a old dragon kayak , i only saw these fancy things
Not at all, you can enter and paddle any kayak 👍
@@rokkitkit might have to give it a go im from hervey bay never done a surf launch before
Beautiful footage. What kind of camera?
Thanks Mate, GoPro Hero3+ for the front and pole cams. Hero5 Black for the chest.
Outstanding. In the past, I've thought the Go-Pros exhibited the unpleasant "fishbowl" effect, but your videos don't appear to have those flaws.
What line do you use on your penn clash 2
The clash had some 20lbs coloured braid that changes very 10 meters so I know how deep it is sinking.
Queston why didnt you use on of the smaller taylor that you let go for a mackerel in your out her video
This one was a while ago so I'm not sure, but it would have most probably been because I had better bait that trolled better... maybe 😅
Don't you need ice in there to keep the fish edible?
Most of my trips are short before work and before the sun gets to intense in the morning, so no need for ice. The Noosa Comp is a bit of a tricky one, as it is a longer day and is usually pretty sunny. I have ice in the car ready to go as soon as I hit the beach but this year I decided to take some tech ice wraps for these longer days. I have eaten all the fish caught on these days in the past and they have been fine, but I think they could have been that bit better chilled, especially if I want to eat them raw. Cheers Rod
nice man
Thanks Mate
Did you win the tournament?
I won the previous two years but this time it all happened too late... buy the time a caught a decent fish I was so far away from launch I couldn't get back to weigh in on time. Even if i did get back I think I would have only been good for third... which is what I got last year as well :) Will need to up my game for 2019!
how many miles do you think you paddle a trip?
Depends on how much time I have... most trips would be before work, so around 15 - 20km (9-12.5miles). But at a long comp day up to 40km (25miles)
RoKKiT KiT how do you have energy to go to work afterwards ?
What was your placement on tournament?
I actually did not end up weighing in that year.. I had come first the two previous years and in this vid had missed a few good chances, was not until the very end that I managed to get a decent fish and by that time me and a mate had decided to just slowly make our way back after weigh in. The 2018 Noosa comp is next week so Im pumped to regain the crown... maybe :)
Do you simply just rinse the saltwater off?
Im guessing your talking about the reels... yep I just give them a hose off after each trip, then they get a service once a year.
RoKKiT KiT
Really? And they stay that shiney?
Yep, my reels get used a few times a week so they are always pretty clean. The camera doesn't show the scratches up much from the kayak abuse but they are minor.
Sir are you pilipino american you looks like pilipino american im from Philippines im always watching your video
Why do you keep paddling when you have a fish on and taking drag
I keep paddling when i get a hit trolling as it keeps the pressure on the line and sets the hook and gives me time to slightly turn into the rod that's on, that way I can get pulled away from the other lines if all goes well. Also when you keep paddling you can often get the double hook up from another excited fish in the school.
RoKKiT KiT oh smart would you be able to do a video on how your connect your fish finder please
Is that grey hair I see buddy?
It sure is, Its comping in fast since the kids :)
Why don't you carry a fish bag on the kayak to throw the fish on ice?
Most of my trips are short before work and before the sun gets to intense in the morning, so no need for ice. The Noosa Comp is a bit of a tricky one, as it is a longer day and is usually pretty sunny. I have ice in the car ready to go as soon as I hit the beach. I have eaten all the fish caught on these days in the past and they have been fine, but I think they could have been that bit better chilled, especially if I want to eat them raw. Cheers Rod
que linea usas?
JORGE RL no creo que sepa español..
50lbs Spiderwire Code Red braid on this reel.
fishing is an universal language... lol
U should get a hobie
Hobies don’t stand a chance in some of the surf I launch in... many try and fail and are left on the beach... then they all end up buying skis like mine, when they have had enough punishment and broken gear😆 hobies are still a great kayak just not very good in the surf.
aren't you scared of sharks?
I tend not to worry about them... they are usually only sniffing around for a free feed of fish.
Subarus run the world :)
12:49 sounds like Patrick star
Never heard of a Mahi being called a Dorado, I've always called them Mahi or Dolphins
Yep they get called Derardo in South Africa.
"Dorado" Sorry typo :)
Retz they call them Dorado in Mexico too. caught a 16er in Cabo, still my pb out there.
Ahh I see, here in Perth at least I've never heard anyone use 'Dorado', it's always been 'Mahi Mahi' or 'Dolphin fish' over here.
With the amount of names/nicknames that some fish have it gets really confusing sometimes lmao
Retz ha for sure. no matter the species, i call them dinner!
Z
wrong vid soz
All good mate
you need to cut out the chit chat about yourself
You can cut the chit chat on your channel mate :) I talk too much and people don't like it, I don't talk much and people don't like it...
Yeah you can cut the chit get sit down boyyyyyy 😂😂😂
