- Ever found yourself asking the question "Which Locking Nut should I use for my project?"
Read the in depth article here:
www.accu.co.uk...
In this video, we're taking a look at some of the most popular type of Locking Nuts in our engineering component range. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type and talk about some examples of applications and industries they're used for.
We also briefly discuss the problems that can occur when using Locking Nuts, such as Thread Galling, and tell you some of the most common ways to prevent these types of issues.
Locknuts are typically used to help prevent loosening, particularly for fixtures which are subjected to shock and vibrations. Locking nuts are installed in various ways, depending on the type of locknut used, but typically they're used in conjunction with a machine screw or bolt to fasten to a mating surface.
Accu stock a wide range of locking nuts in thousands of different sizes, materials & finishes. Learn about the best locking nut options for your application by watching this comprehensive guide to Jam Nuts, Nyloc Nuts, Metal Locking Nuts, Aerotight Nuts and Shear Nuts.

Sorry the locking nut got stolen from the right so a V cant be deployed
What not earthquake in beyjing? 😭
Hey! 🤘
Thanks, am assembling exercise equipment and the diagram is to small and couldn't tell which direction to face the locknut. Thank you!
Thanks for the appreciation, we hope the assembly went well. If you're ever in need of components and tools for your projects, be sure to check out our online store:

Thank you! This is another fine example of YT explaining exactly what I needed. You are a clear and concise teacher as well!
Thanks for the great feedback, great to hear you found the video helpful! 😄
nice explanation! could you do a video on DEEZ NUTZ as well?😂
Using a nylon locknut in am outdoor/marine vertical application ...is it recommended to have the nut facing the weather or the bolt head.
Hi John, as shown in the video (from 2:20) it’s recommended to fasten the Nylon locking nut so that the nylon insert is facing away from the head of the bolt (I.e. toward the end of the thread). If using in a marine environment, we would also recommend choosing an A4 (316 grade) stainless steel nut as this will provide the additional corrosion resistance needed.
Okay but how can I remove a locking nut?
Hi Zach, a great question thanks for asking! It all depends on the exact type of locking but you’re using as to what the best tools/ method of removal are. Specifically which locking but are you looking at?
Nylon nut from lawnmower deck wheel
You dont 😈
Very handy video. Might be worth mentioning sprung washers and whether they have any relevance with regard to preventing loosening.
Thanks Mike, really appreciate the feedback!

What do you call a Aerotight nut in the USA/standard, I'm having hard time finding it?
Hi Tommy, Aerotight are a specialist brand of all-metal locking nuts. We offer a range of sizes with international shipping options available. Aerotight Nuts can be found here on our US site: accu-components.com/us/1550-aerotight-nuts
Thank you! Great presenter and well explained.
Thanks George!
What kind of nut would go on a lawnmower blade? How to know the right size locknut needed?
Hi there 👋 best thing to do would be to speak directly with our application engineers using our 24/7 online chat:
www.accu.co.uk/contact
But how does the all-metal locking nut actually work? Does it damage the threads of the bolt?
Hi there, the triangular shaped indent on the top of the All-Metal Locking Nuts compress the top threads of the nut, creating a band of tight threads which act as a locking mechanism.

Make video on manufacturing of metal locking nuts
Thanks for the suggestion Hemant, we'll look into this one for the future.
Very clear, thank you!
Best best best video
nice explaination.
For Nyloc Nut Spring Washer required or not?
No Vishal. Spring washers are not necessary when using Nyloc Nuts. For maximum vibration resistance we would recommend Nord-Lock washers. This video illustrates why: ruclips.net/video/IKwWu2w1gGk/видео.html
Thanks sir
Very informative. Wondering about a solution to lock a vehicle receiver hitch. I have a hitch lock for my bike rack-to-receiver but need to lock the receiver to the bumper. Currently it is secured only by a hex nut/lock washer. The “lock” needs to be removable so I can switch out between a ball hitch and the receiver hitch.
Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you. 🌿
Hi Hope, love the username, the world needs more turtles! We are having a tough time visualising your application and would like to know more detail. Could you take a photo and send it to sales@accu.co.uk and we will do our best to help!

useful

Is a nulon lock nut a one time use? Or can it be removed and applied again elsewhere?
Hi razz P, thanks for your question. Nylon Locking Nuts are technically reusable, however as discussed at 2:56, there is debate over their effectiveness when reused.
Any benefit to using Nordlocks with Aerotight nuts?
Hi QuickDraw, both are robust anti-loosening technologies in their own right but they are compatible. So if you were looking for an extreme 'belt and braces' approach with no cost concerns this would be feasible and may offer additional peace of mind.
Can you wind on a nylon lock nut as far as you need? Or does the bolt need to be the right length
Hi Max, you should be able to fasten this as far as needed but you would need to bear in mind the increase in torque required as the friction increases. Also worth noting the ways to avoid thread galling as mentioned from 1:32.
Is threadlock the same aas a locking nut?
Hi razz P, our thread locking patch is a compound which can be added to screw threads to increase resistance to vibrations. You can learn more in our handy article here:

Great presentation thank you
You’re very welcome, we’re glad you found it helpful!
thank you mate! I had no idea which way to put them on and now I do.
You're very welcome Jill, glad we could help!
Hi I just purchased some aerotight nuts from you I'm hopeing there my solution to a problem I have a large scale petrol rc car and the exhaust header bolts keep vibrating out the cylinder head and causing the exhaust to leak. I cannot use red loctite so hopefully these nuts will do the trick and not become loose from engine vibrating.
Thanks for the purchase, we confirmed with our engineering team that application should work. Just be careful to ensure the bolt thread protrudes through the nut by two full threads so full engagement of the locking element is achieved. If you could confirm the solution works with us when we request product feedback it would be greatly appreciated and will help others who may have a similar problem.
@@AccuComponents yes no problem will give you an update
@@tkrlex3462 take a look at nord lock washers if its still loosening.
@@tkrlex3462 How did it go?
You are the best thank you.
Cheers Dávid, we’re glad the video helped you 😄
Thank you Sir !
Most welcome!
Is it wrong to install a locking nut, pointy side in first? I think I may have done just that and now nut won't come out or go in. Please help! This was installing a metal bed frame
Morning Vijay, a useful trick to removing nylon locking nuts is to heat the nut up with a hair dryer which will soften the nylon and enable you to undo the nut, then you can put the nut back on the right way round. You should also consider that it's not recommended to reuse Nylon locking nuts more than a few times, as the nylon will wear out and lead to less effective locking over time. If you'd like to purchase replacement nylon locking nuts, here's our range:
www.accu.co.uk/57-hexagon-nylon-locking-nuts
Jam nuts are the way to go. For security applications like bicycle wheels, place the half width nut on the inside. Then use a thin bike wrench to hold it while tightening the outer, full-size nut against the inner nut. (You must use correct torque, so get the right tool if you are not good at this manually). Not only will the nuts not loosen from vibration, but thieves will need a precise, multi-piece toolset & the right knowledge to remove the wheel.
Thanks for the great insight! You could also look at our security fasteners & tools too, including 1-way permanent fixings, all of which can be found here on our online store:
