- MCU Belleau Wood Lecture Series: 100 Years of Making Marines and Winning Battles
Lecture 1: This lecture focuses on World War I and is presented by Dr. Charles Neimeyer and LtCol Peter Owen, USMC (Ret). The discussion focuses on the Barnett/Lejeune efforts to build up the Corps in anticipation of U.S. entry into WWI. A key element of the story is the high-quality Marine leaders that emerged from the crucible of the “Great War” and how they continued to shape the Corps in the ensuing decades.
This is by far the best lecture on Belleau Wood on RUclips. Ive been studying and reading about the battle for about 5 years and didn’t know half the things presented in this lecture. I wish MCU offered a course in it to civilian Marines.
Military History is 4 Me what do you know about the 23rd Infantry’s role in the battle? The Army’s 23rd Infantry of their 2nd Division to be more precise. A relative of mine who was in the 23rd Infantry was killed during the Battle of Soissons on July 18th but I just read something about the 23rd Infantry being involved in Belleau Wood. I can’t find much on the 23rd in Belleau Wood...most of the information I read on the battle focuses on the Marines...

My great uncle 1st Lt. Orlando C. Crowther was KIA on the morning of the 6th. He was once of those in the 67th who helped take Hill 142. I've seen him written up in some histories of the battle.

I'm saving it for later. My research says I need to hear n watch it. My Grandfather fought in that Battle, so I need to know about it. I hope it fill in gaps, questions, and provides some answers.
Ooorah!!! Great lecture! Too bad the Marine Corps has been weakened by political correctness, just like all the other branches, but it did hold out the longest. I often wonder if America and its military could ever fight a truly "all out, total war" again? My opinion: no way.
Unfortunately, the prevailing belief is that will never be needed again.
We have a terrible tendency of getting caught resting on our laurels. It happened during every mayor conflict with the worst being Pearl Harbor. BUT! When we wake up to what's happening, its on baby!

Excellent presentation! However, one glaring piece of information that I find lacking in all the videos, lectures and presentations concerning Belleau Wood is, what was the total distance the 5th and 6th Regiment's from their jumping off point to the edge of Belleau Wood? Does anyone know?

French soldiers are good, just our generals and politiciens were two wars behind. Once they had good generals as le Clerc, they did wonders as in north africa against Rommel.
Some of their institutions date back to Louis XIV like the Royal Artillery college. Napoleon studied there. Admission was based on exams opened to everyone as they wanted the best. Europe was more militaristic than the United States. The US never kept a large standing army during peace time until after WWII but Europe's arms race had been relentless.
