- Rescued from the quicksand of obsolete technology, this 2004 production features a K-8 arts magnet-school cast. Directed by Deborah Fleischman, this rendition is based on the original 1957 televised version. This is a charming and quite remarkable production as the script in use is essentially the 1957 original one written by Hammerstein. For years a kinescope copy languished in the archives until recently when it was released on DVD. It's quite different from the revised ones. It's clear that it's used as a reference for even some of the choreography and direction mimics it. The actors are strikingly committed bringing youth and enthusiasm to the production. And the sets and costumes are amazing!

@@posterboyz You're welcome. I was one of the many children who saw the original telecast in 1957. Soon after my parents bought me the album which is etched into my memory bank as I endlessly listened to it. However, I had to wait many years to finally see the video at the Museum of Radio and Television in NYC. There are a number of student productions circulating on RUclips and I watched one that used the altered script from the Broadway revival. I was quite surprised to see this as I'm most drawn to the original Hammerstein book which is beautifully crafted. You also answered a question which I was tempted to ask: what happened to the actors? There clearly was talent and Matt, in particular stood out. Thank you.
I was a bit too young to have watched and remembered the original 1957 version (but remember seeing Mary Martin's Peter Pan in 1960!). So happy you enjoyed this.
Here's another performance of the same play. Same school and same director but performed 13 years earlier (1991). Managed to rescue it from obsolete analog technology to live another day. Thanks again for your kind words.

I learned this recording is actually the first dress rehearsal for the live national broadcast, which took place 2 weeks later. Remarkable CBS was able to pull it off so well.

i've seen this musical a million times in many versions and i've played trombone in the pit, yet i honestly did not expect that it would skip right to "the prince is giving a ball" scene
Aside from the overture and the curtain music for act I, "The Prince is Giving a Ball" is the first song in the original 1957 TV production and in the stage show that was based on that. This production was done in 2004, well before the 2012 reboot. I'm not sure where the song appears in the Enchanted version.
@@bonjernoorr Thanks, as I was watching this I realized that it's closer to the original and wondered how many changes were made to create the newest version of the musical. In the newer version, "The prince is giving a ball" is like the 3rd or 4th song in the musical, right after the intro and "me who am i" that prince Topher sings.
Enjoyed this a lot, makes me wish I'd attended a school like this. I wish I could see the performances they cranked out several years later in high school!
Many of the actors went on to attend Lee High Arts Magnet School in Huntsville, AL and I can testify that their performances progressed along with their age under the direction of Vivienne Atkins and Ron Harris. I saw many of the shows live but have yet to see any videos posted to RUclips.

What version is this? I can't find this length for our cast to do, I can only find the 60-minute version and the 2-hour version.
Sorry, I've no idea. Perhaps the longer version was used with some scenes cut?
I'm not certain how one would obtain this version, but as I stated in my comment, it's essentially the 1957 original Hammerstein script with a few nods to the 1965 remake. Perhaps that might offer some help?
