    According to the World Bank, over the past 40 years, the number of people in China with incomes below $1.90 per day - the International Poverty Line as defined by the World Bank to track global extreme poverty- has fallen by close to 800 million.
    By 2012, the number of people in China living below the international poverty line had fallen to fewer than 90 million, and by 2016, it had fallen to 7.2 million people (0.5% of the population), BBC.
    By the end of 2020, the final 98.99 million impoverished rural residents in China had all been lifted out of poverty.
    All 832 impoverished counties and 128,000 villages had been removed from the poverty list.

    Crazy thought, but stay with me. Chinese EVs have a lower sale price because manufacturing costs are 40% lower than in the U.S. Go ahead and blame greedy U.S. automakers for focusing on luxury EVs or poo poo tariffs that make imports more expensive for consumers and protect U.S. industry & unionized workers, but that won’t change the facts. China has a competitive advantage from: $29 billion in corporate subsidies & tax breaks; forced/repressed labor & wages; LFB battery production; rare metal mining controls, and largest refining capacity. Even if the U.S. was a state-capitalist economic system that was able to take sweeping industry wide action today, we are two decades behind. Buy an American EV if you can afford one. If not, buy a Chinese EV. Just don’t pretend like we are going to even the playing field.

    Hundreds of companies have tried in the past to diversify away from China as a political risk management measure, AKA "de-risking". But it's rarely ever worked.
    Even if they move their operations to lower cost countries like Mexico where wages are less than 1/3rd of those in China, their overall production cost still ends up being higher. Wages just aren't a large portion of the cost of production for most complex consumer goods. For a smartphone, the cost of labor represents less than 5%.

    Bri knows nothing of how China makes "cheaper" EVs. The Chinese government subsidizes their companies, which produce their EVs with government funds along with cheaper labor. In truth, it still costs quite a bit more to make an EV than a conventional car. The only reason China can sell theirs cheaper is because of their government. Our government is also subsidizing the EV market. No consumer is actually paying the true cost of those vehicles based on natural supply and demand and market values. Take out the government, and you'll realize very few ordinary citizens could actually afford them, and their break-even at carbon emissions is about 10 years as opposed to a gas vehicle.

    The US must re-industrialize to move from a make-believe, financialized based economy to one that actually makes products of value and provides solid, higher-wage jobs. Yellen just tried to tell China to slow their economy and stop making so many things to which Xi just laughed (and rightly so). Tariffs are not the only answer but they are an instrument along with US investment into building back manufacturing that could benefit US workers.

    THE main reason for expensive American cars is price-gouging. As was evidenced by profit levels so high that line workers revolted demanding and subsequently getting raises.
    Bri doesn't know what she's talking about. BYD makes perfectly decent $12k electric cars because all parts are made in-house. No subcontracting of plastics, glass, electronics, or really anything else other than tires.

      @frontlinewitness 16 дней назад

      no, the issue is tariffs and protectionism in the USA, the USA hates the free market unless its advantageous to them. Ford and GM is also failing in Europe, Japan, and China as well, who doesn't have the same regulation. They've been protected by big daddy for so long they forgot how to compete.

      China are better at manufacturing than the US. 20 years ago their advantage was the volume of cheap labor, now it is an increasing number of educated people and massive efficiency gains within these industries. Their wage rates have increased significantly more than the rest of Asia yet they are still the cheapest manufacturers for semi and hi tech products.

    • @j.thomas8547
      @j.thomas8547 15 дней назад

      @@ajnz2420these vehicles would not meet the minimum standards in the US for many current regulations. Safety being the biggest. Some plastics and psunts would not be allowed. This is not to say that these cars are bad, but having to meet regulatory standards adds costs to a car.

      The point being, charge China for things that is insignificant to our economy but not hold them to the agreement to not buy oils from those countries. So NEITHER one is holding China to accountability nor the things they have put tariffs on are even a big import into the US. So what damage is that doing to China. It's all for show.

With this comercial business Quotas all multinacionais companies were obligated to diverse their production bettewn Ásia and Ocident. It was the best way to reduce CO2 global emissions and a better balance for economic grow for all parts

    This is the result of heavy lobbying by the legacy auto industry who have a vested interest in keeping Internal combustion engines going. By adopting that 'stalling' policy they allowed Chinese EV manufacturers and also Tesla to disrupt the market and take a big share of it leaving them lagging far behind. Now they have Biden to protect them from competition which means they have less incentive to innovate and change to full scale EV production. If the world was right the directors of those legacy auto manufacturers would have been shown the door long ago for their hubris and utter incompetence in the face of change that everyone knew was coming well in advance. Meanwhile the planet continues to heat up.

    I can tell you a couple reasons why EV's are so expensive. The one obvious reason is greed. US car manufacturers are making tons of profits by overcharging consumers. The second reason is the Chinese government heavily subsidizes their EV market. For some perspective, there were over 354,000 Teslas sold in the US in 2022. If the government subsidized $15,000 per Tesla, that would drop their lowest model down to $25,000. That would cost the US government about 5.3 billion dollars. I'm no anti-Israel person. I think it is unfair to hear all of this outrage over Israel's military response to the October terrorist attack without applying equal pressure to Hamas to release the hostages unconditionally. However, the US sends about 4.75 billion dollars to Israel yearly. I'm not saying we divert all of the Israeli aid to subsidize EVs. I'm just saying this country can come up with money for whatever cause the power brokers deem important.
