Commune - Roy Harper (cover + guitar tutorial)

- This is Commune, Roy Harper's classic from Valentine. I had done a guitar tutorial for this song a couple of years ago, but this is a better effort. And I am finally able to pull off a half-decent cover.
I've always had trouble with singing this song, but mind you, this is a tough one. Difficulty points? First of all, there is the guitar riff which incorporates a few tricky hammer-ons and pull-offs. It is quite intricate and busy so it requires some practice. This time I have tried to break it apart and come closer to what Roy actually plays. I also put down a more detailed lesson.
On top of that, the lyrics are quite exquisite and (again) busy. The verses come in torrents and it just doesn't leave you much time to relax. And it's all very sophisticated, very baroque -- at least for my English... So I rather not take my eyes off the lyric sheet as safety measure. The way I feel it, once you can pass the lines "Two silver greenflies to flicker the back dropping lush of the emerald springtime / To lust for a moment in love of another as dust on a dragonfly's wing" you will be alright.
The guitar lesson starts at 4:34
Standard tuning, capo 2nd fret.
May this help ye all, troubadours!
I actually think that your voice has a musicality and "timbre" which is very like Roy's. I can't remember your voice reaching any of the higher notes that Roy was, and maybe still is, capable of reaching, but his voice has always been quite exceptional, but you adjust your singing very well to his style and I don't think I've heard anyone covering his songs so well. And I think I speak for all of us players who often wonder how Roy plays, a big Thank You for all of your covers and tutorials!
Thank you John. I am glad that you tell me that the singing is ok. 2 years ago I wouldn't be able to sing two lines together without completely losing it. Practice, practice, practice... :)
These comments are old.
Just in case you're, dead,
or I'm talking to your, spirit, or you've moved on, or are
fast asleep (or were) brilliant, ananylis of a great
song you've done all the hard work on our behalf. Thank you.
Thanks Trevor. I am not dead yet. My latest upload was about a month ago. But I think I'm done now. My next videos will be on songs from Roy's upcoming album.
Excellent, love this version. Makes me really want to have a go at this. Not an easy one - both parts are exquisite. Your voice is great. Thanks for a very clear tutorial :)
John
fantastic. And a good explication. You are the best...
and you are a fanatic Roy Harper's songs.
Thank you.
It's a beautiful cover. Thanks for explaining!
Thank you. You're welcome
Thank you. Lucky you. Tell him he should come to Portugal. Well, maybe on holiday... :)
Beautifully played. It's always been beyond me, so thank you for the demystification.
Thanks mate. You are welcome.
Absolutely amazing.
Thank you so much
This is an amazing accomplishment. You are balancing on a tiny fragment of a beautiful and tragic archipelago.
Thank you. I haven't played this in a long time but I think I know what you mean. There's a constant fear of stumbling in word or a chord. Difficult for me to get a clean take.
@@BadSpeech Your RH videos are a treasure.
tricky tune but as always beyond beautiful...thanks for the reboot, Joao,,i'm gonna get this despite the intricacy..thanks for helping
Great job, Love this song, a timeless work of art.

Brilliant yet again Fella. Thank you. And you really do sound like the man himself.

Thank you.
Great stuff. Thank you!
Thanks
Superb stuff once again Joao. Many thanks, but I'm sure this will get my fingers in a knot.
Just another 3 weeks and I'll be watching Roy in Manchester!
Thank you so much Colin. Good to hear from you. I know the camera has the auto-focus issue that makes some background noise, but actually I don't dislike the overall sound. I guess I am a lo-fi guy :)
I enjoyed that. Thanks!
Thank you. I'm glad you did.
Great cover, mate. You really explained the picking well on this one, too.
Thanks.
Thanks mate. I am glad that it helped.
How lovely
Thank you
the best cover of all covers very well done! bravo!
Lol, you must really like this song. :)
But thanks you ;)
Very well done....
Thanks
Thank you. A work of art indeed :)

You are welcome
Really well played and sung Joao..a very enjoyable performance..sounds spot on to me, you have obviously put a lot of effort into getting this one right (like you do with all your performances)
best wishes
Stuart
Thank you Stuart. I am quite happy just to be able to pull it off. Have a nice Christmas mate.

the style that Roy Plays on Commune is very reminiscent of the folk blues fingerstyle playing that was prevalent amongst the greats in the 60's and early 70's like Roy, Bert Janch, John Renbourne, Ralph Mctell et al, so if you can play this song you could probably turn your hand to some of their stuff as well
Excellent . Well done :)
Thanks a lot.
:) Every guitar played for everyone :)
Once again another great cover, just cracked this tricky little finger tip destroying ,frustratingly hard to sing to number... A tip for this one I found is start slow get all notes to roll then patience...... Paractice......patience . . then when u got it down a large brandy to ease the mental trauma from learning it.. Thanks again for this lesson.... But please, please post rushing camelot . cheers mate keep it up
You have to get the guitar part in auto-pilot mode :) Then focus on the singing. At first, it will be awful, but you will get there in time.
Rushing Camelot: right now it is still sounding awful. In time… Cheers!
Thanks for your reply. I'm left handed but play right handed and it took me abt 3 days of constant picking to get it right now my picking hand is autonomous its now all abt fitting the vocals in.. But as you already know there is a couple of lines that will make or break it...the only hints I've found for rushing Camelot is its in D and it has subliminal bends that was in the notes in the CD sleeve notes. But I have confidence that you will master it ! Then share it with us.😀. Thank you so much for your lessons .
col ski DADGAD tune down to A ;)
Amazing cover and lesson! Is there a way I can contact you to share my backing tracks?
Thank you so much
Thank you so much fella :)
Stunning. Dare I say up there with the main man,
Not quite, but thanks mate :)
Apart from the great guitar work you manage to catch the tone of his voice...and can I ask where you are from?
Thanks. I am from Portugal.
This is a much better tutorial. I hope you will be able to get it right.
Good music has always room for improvising so probably Roy also changes it everytime he plays, so it's a good training to start with the most basic riff and go adding your own style to it.
of course :)
whats the name of that guitar?
Tanglewood TW173
Thank you.
