I dont really collect autographs, but the one I did get was, for me, the greatest driver of all time... Ayrton Senna.
I met him at tyre testing at Silverstone in 88, he had finished for the day and was in the paddock just getting in to his Austin Montego hire car with his model aeroplane in the back and there was just me and him about. I was on the other side of the car and called "Ayrton" and he put his hand up, said hello, then actually came round the car to come and speak to me. I got his autograph but within 2 seconds we were surrounded by tens of people all doing the same, but it was amazing that he was so friendly and humble and it is a moment I treasure and will always stay with me and just wanted to share the story. Value of autograph.... priceless (well to me)

Best way for the Belgian GP is during media day on thursday. You have to wait a long time, because all the gates open at once and a lot of people are present. But you have to choose between the autographs or a pitlane walk, which is a difficult choice. Got lucky in 2018 with Kimi, Seb, Leclerc, Stroll and Hülkenburg. Hamilton was about to sign my Ferrari cap and then thought "naw I'm out" and moved on.
In 2019 I got lucky with F2 drivers as Mick Schumacher just so happened to walk by. Was also close to a few F2 drivers during a media session on Saturday, but decided I didn't want an autograph or photo. Unfortunately an hour or 2 later one of them died in the feature race.

I raced in the feature F4 race and met Kimi, Leclerc, and Giovinazzi in Shanghai 2019. Kimi and Giovinazzi lived in the Hyatt hotel and so did I. They both used the main elevator. I met Giovinazzi in the morning and astonishingly nobody around me seemed to notice him. Kimi is a big sensation in China, and hundreds of his fans waited in the hotel lobby. I finished my Friday track walk around 8pm, went back to the hotel and happened to ride the same elevator ride with Kimi alone, I was a bit star-struck and only said I was a big fan and wish him all the best, he nodded and said thank you. I met Leclerc on Saturday morning, he entered the paddock from the back, where F4 and PCCA teams are stationed. Got a few nice pictures.
Hospitality pass in China is cheaper than their face value, but no driver engagement session, at least for the Redbull paddock pass.

I don't really collect autographs but I do love getting selfies with the drivers and other team personnel. After the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2019, instead of going to the Killers concert, I went to the entrance of the paddock and waited for two hours to get as many selfies as possible. There was only about 20 other fans waiting so it was a golden opportunity to get selfies. It turned out I got selfies with all the drivers bar Hamilton, Vettel, Gasly, Kubica, Magnussen and Norris and many others including Helmet Marko, Fabio Quatararo, Fernando Alonso and Alain Prost. I couldn't believe my luck as I only discovered how to get to the paddock entrance that Sunday morning and I was originally planning to go to that concert instead until I felt like waiting outside the paddock entrance to meet some of the drivers after a fairly boring Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. I would say that the top three people who didn't want to have selfies were Kevin Magnussen, David Coulthard and Kimi Räikkönen. They didn't care whatsoever about the people who were trying to get selfies with them haha. I had to literally run up to Kimi as he was about to get into his car and leave the circuit. Unfortunately when Lewis Hamilton came out of the paddock, everyone swarmed him and it almost became a stampede. I decided to get out of the huddle and let my opportunity pass as there was a couple with a baby right in the middle of the huddle and it was getting very dangerous. Eventually Lewis told everyone to disperse as he saw the baby and was getting worried about it getting hurt.

I mastered the autograph session at COTA. I’ve gone yearly and it has helped with getting a good spot. I was talking to a guy I’ve met at COTA a few times, about how Lewis’s autograph have changed over the years. And I replied “yes, I’ve noticed that too. It use to be like this....” and I showed him the tattoo on my wrist of Lewis Hamilton autograph I got in 2016. And he was blown away and replied “yesss, that’s the good style, he use to do.”
Last year Lewis accidentally signed my hat twice. He said “ I’ve already signed it” then signed it again. And I said to Lewis, “ I know. I’m getting squeezed by the crowd and can’t get my arm out. Sorry.”
Some people may think having two autographs on one hat is cool, but I wish it didn’t happen honestly. If I could transfer one to another hat, I would. Lol
People at the COTA autograph session act like ANIMALS ! So be prepared to get squeezed. I highly recommends sending your kids to the kids zone of the autograph session. The drivers send longer time there and it’s more safer for them

Although drivers may know that some fans are actually professional autograph hunters, it may actually be more beneficial for them to sign. First off, the more autographs they sign the lower the value others are making off them. But secondly, they know no every fan is able to meet them and that some fans want to buy their autograph. They'd rather the autograph that the fans are buying are real and not fake. If they don't sign the autographs, a lot more fakes will appear on the market, especially as the value of non-signers autographs are higher.

Interesting story on how I got my Valtteri Bottas autograph. My partner's dad works for Mercedes Canada and they are always invited to the race in Montreal with access into the pit lane, the garage along with private dinners with the whole F1 team. When he tried to approach Valtteri at the event he couldn't even get near him. It wasn't until the next day when they were invited to the garage to see the cars that he spoke to someone on the team, I remember he said it was a gentleman named Cameron. They had a nice chat and Cameron decided to go around back to ask Valtteri for his signature for us. This made the autograph even more special to me.
Also, I remember him showing me that there's a signed one for sale by Mercedes and it was priced at $400 Canadian dollars. Maybe because he is a Mercedes driver they are able to price it higher than what's on the internet?

Unfortunately, the only one that never answered was Senna so I had to get one on track. It was 1993 at Imola. In 1995 at Imola, I gave it a Brazilian fan. The kindest letters you get are the ones from the lesser known and popular drivers, they even write you a letter and thank you for that.

I have a few from former drivers (Barrichello, Maldonado, Sato) as well as former and future driver Alonso. Got them at the 24h of Daytona Beach 2 years ago, came to the racetrack 4h early to be the first in line to get the Alonso one.
Best thing is, I got Alonso to sign a hat of mine that I got from driving a speeddown race as a kid. Good personal memory + signature of one of the all-time greats of F1...

I have Jensen Buttons in US Grand Prix hat when he did a session at a Target and I felt awful for him because no one showed up. Also have Jaun Montoya’s when he did a session here in Indy before a race. It was considerably more well attended.

When I was at Silverstone last year I was lucky enough to get my old McLaren MP4-29 cap signed by Lewis, Carlos, Zak Brown and even Johnny Herbert. I really wanted to meet Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris but it wasn't to be, the one driver I would give anything to meet besides Daniel and Lando would be Jenson Button as I named my son after him when he was born in 2009 and even after all this time I've not met him, I would give my left leg to meet JB Daniel or Lando 🙏

Nice to hear the stories of Adelaide. I've been an official for many, many Australian GP's and have never been in the right area on the track or the opportunity to get close enough to a driver to get an autograph. I am often envious of those who have the time to hang around. Often while I'm doing my job at the track.

Back in the 1970s and 80s. It was so easy to get drivers autographs. First drivers autographs I got was the ever kind New zealander Denis Hulme. Who went about talking to nervous 12 yr old me feel very much relaxed. He was such a lovely man. Funny as hell. Sir Jackie I waited for at the same Rafe but he was extremely busy. I'd asked him earlier if when he wasnt busy could he sign this poster I had. He said yeah I'll be back in a bit I promise. I'm like okey cool I'll hang around watching other drivers around. Got a very sweet Emmerson Fittapadlis autograph. And a rushed off his feet Colin Chapman's signature. Another really patient guy.
Anyway started talking with some other fans. And I get this tug on my shoulder. I turned around it was Sir Jackie. He says you still want me to sign your poster. I was over the moon. He's such a kind guy.
Over the years I got a number of autographa from various drivers.
I thnk it's best to try to guage how they're being around other people. Don't tell don't scream. Be polite. One thing autographed at a time. Àlways say thankyou.
    Dont keep bothering people. .
    Easy.

I have a signed official post from the 1992 Detroit Grand Prix with most of the driver's signatures on it. all the big ones like Emerson, Andretti, Rahal, Unser, Tracy, Hill, and Gordon. All in, I have probably 16 of the drivers and Mario signed it too! I worked the pits for SCAA for the race so I got to meet most of the drivers. It's been framed since 1992 and still in perfect condition. Wonder what it is worth?

I only sent one from his current Ferrari days, after 2 months of waiting, I got it signed back and one official Ferrari one. Both were properly signed of course, and the official one is not printed. You can find more info on his website.

You can also get some signatures by mailing the team an envelope with your address and postage on it they will send you cards with a picture of the driver and an autograph. If you request it this way it will take some months to arrive but that is probably the cheapest way outside of meeting a driver, please note however that not all teams do this but I know that McLaren and Red Bull at the very least do this.

Where to send depends on the team, but it is generally the headquarters. To get a sure fire answer try asking them via social media or email through fan forms that are often available on their websites. I would suggest waiting until the virus is completely gone as they may not even open mail just in case to prevent all spreading of the virus. This reddit post has some more information for you: www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/ac0tze/received_a_few_autograph_cards_today_see_comments/

I can't stand the scribble done by modern F1 drivers. I formed my collection, starting with J-M Fangio and Jackie Stewart, by writing to them at their respective homes. From some riders and drivers, I met them whilst at Goodwood. I now have over fifteen F1 World Champions and many World Motorcycle Champions, almost all by dilligently searching for their addresses online or attending events like Goodwood. I also sometimes have spares (Hunt, Moss, Andretti, Jones) which I'd swop for others I don't have. Buying? I almost never buy but if I do it has to be sensibly priced. The highest was Senna with an authenticating certificate from a reputable dealer.
