  • Dune Part 2 has the perfect scene. In this video essay, I discuss why the Paul Atreides speech scene in Denis Villeneuve's Dune Part 2 is perfect. I breakdown why this incredible scene becomes the true meaning of Dune Part 2.
Paul Atreides leads nomadic tribes in a battle to control the desert planet Arrakis. Dune is an upcoming epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. The film is an international co-production of Canada, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, which will cover roughly the first half of the book. The film stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

There are many scenes in Dune Part 2 that stand out when I think of the best scene in the film. I honestly could have picked 3 or 4. But I think the one I picked showcases the turn of Paul Atreides and the central purpose of Villeneuve's adaptation the best, and it grows every time I see it. What is your favourite scene from Dune Part 2? Let me know in the comments below alongside why you think it's the best scene. I've also got a biggest differences video going up in the next day or two, so stay tuned for that!

I don’t think Paul can see other people’s past, but he does have the ability to see thousands of different scenarios in the future where he had conversations with all the fremen. That’s how he knew about his grandmother. Paul only has the memories of his own bloodline.

I think one of my favorite parts about how this shift is addressed visually is that we no longer have close ups of Paul. We are given a more distant view of him in crowds as if we are observing and judging him for the first time like others in the crowd. The audience has essentially lost touch with the old Paul (established by all of extreme close-ups of him and Chani in the first acts which essentially show his humanity).

The slow walk on the horizon with the grandfather worm "rejoicing" in his wake, essentially announcing to all within eye's reach, "this is the chosen"...that was my favorite part of the entire movie. The wind-up was amazing, you really don't see it coming because the shots pull out so far that it really nails home how alienated Paul is from the rest of existence now that he has undergone his metamorphosis as the voice of the outer world. You can't see if he's any different because you're forced to look at him within the grander scheme, which denotes the critical nature of his new existence. Why is he so important now? What did he see when he drank the water? How do we know this is real and he's not just high on some billion-year-old drug they make from worm urine?? Why are they not showing us some kind of traditional transformation sequence like they gave his mother??? And then the film grounds you immediately, with something completely organic that is utterly untouched by any human influence or mythology, the acid to cut through the fat's richness. Shia-Hulud. It's such a brief flash of a moment that confirms without a doubt...there is more to this than fictitious mysticism or misplaced religious zeal. _The worms recognize their leader,_ and the worms have always been seen by the Fremen as a manifestation of natural forces, much like a flood or an earthquake. This isn't part of human meddling, this isn't the Fremen youth rebelling against what at times sounds like cultic Bene Gesserit dogma...
Shia-Hulud breaching the surface and excitedly kicking up all that sand is an acknowledgement from the *_forces of nature._* It would be like a tornado stopping once it reached your town, and when you came outside it made itself smaller and began following you around. That's not just human religiosity, that's something beyond even human imagination. As if to confirm it all, you notice Paul isn't even walking like the Fremen do, and the other worms never once move on his position. They acknowledge Shai-Hulud, and Shai-Hulud acknowledge Lisan al Gaib.

Great writing traveler. The only thing I see differently is that it can't be "acknowledgement from the forces of nature" because forces of nature are deterministic and unconscious. It a great scene because on the one hand it is a powerful moment (and performance) when we see Paul finally take charge and embrace this role, but it is also incredibly unnerving as Chani has to watch her people fall under the control of the person she loves. It is like a virus spreading to all her people... During the worm ride sequence she saw how Paul indirectly turned her people into followers, now we and she see him actively doing so with all her pleas falling to deaf ears. It must be terrifying to watch everyone you love and care about become fanatics, abandoning who they were and follow someone blindly. Chilling...

Part of the reason why Paul's speech scene is so hauntingly powerful is its strong parallels with Adolf Hitler's pre-WWII speeches, which ultimately led to the rise of Nazi Germany and the slaughtering of million of Jews throughout Europe (sounds familiar?). Hitler's effective use of poses, combined with his ferocity and sense of determinism (not to mention the introduction of sound in film in the late 20s, hence draws some parallels to Frank Herbert's warning about the seductive power of technology) played an important factor in rallying large number of followers, a tactic also aped by Paul in the movie.

Personally my favorite scene was the last scene. This is an instance where I wish I hadn't read the books and known what was coming, since seeing this unfold for the first time would havd been such an emotional rollercoaster. At first you want to celebrate that Paul avenged his family, however its such a terrible realization that the Holy War, what Paul feared the most, is happening and that this will be a bad thing. While all the Fremen are chanting and praising Paul as their Messiah, the tragedy of this is driven home so well with Zendaya's take on Chani that shows us the whats really happening is that Paul going back on who we wanted to be for the Fremen. "You will never lose me, as long as you stay who you are." And the score "Kiss the Ring" perfectly encapsulates the epicness yet sadness of the scene.

This was definitely my favorite scene of the movie as well, and it had so many incredible scenes. This one though, captured the sense of things slipping out of your control, that there is a wave happening and there is no standing against it. The shift in tone is expected, but still startling when it happens. You might look at Chalamet and ask if he really has that in him, and for a movie and a half you can ask that question. Then in the final half he let's you know not only does he have it, but better then you ever could have imagined. By the time he's standing in front of the legions Fremen with the Crysknife like the promotional shot, you have the chills at was has just transpired.

One of my personal favourites was when Paul put Leto's ring on and says quietly "I've found my way, Father" which I thought was a nice nod to the first film. I also liked the scene where Paul rides the grandfather worm, especially after learning it took several months of Timothy being blasted with wind turbines and sand. The bit when Paul initially stands up is the first time that Timothy found his feet after months of falling over. I loved the Bene Gesserit costumes and the whole cat and mouse thing with Margot Fenring and Feyd. The Bene Gesserit were my favourites in the books due to their scheming and plotting. I found Zendaya's portrayal of Chani annoying, especially her constant scowling.

When Paul says "Fear the moment" I know I definitely did. I feared the moments leading up to it, the moment itself, and all the moments after. Not fear in a "Fear God" religious sense, but I'm genuinely afraid of the consequences of Paul embracing this fatalistic and devastating mantle of messiah. Even if I've seen this trope before, I have to acknowledge how well Dune executed it and respect Herbert for doing this many decades ago. It's still relevant today and sometimes it's the series that originated it that still did it best.

I first thought TC as an actor was boyish (and thin - both physically and metaphorically) for the role. After seeing both movies twice I think his casting and acting are perfect. His physical appearance and demeanour make his transformation and end state more intimidating if anything. I empathized with his initial fear and reluctance and as he took on the mantle of being god like, his hubris and promises of paradise to his followers left me scared. I feel Chani wasn’t dismayed and sad at the very end because she lost a love, but because of what Paul had become to his followers who were blind to what she could see because of her intimate connection to him.

Switching between a conflicted lover still seeking the acceptance and understanding of his beloved and a (young) man demanding his authority from the most powerful man in the universe. His voice when he gave the commands to the Fremen after killing his grandfather was also menacing and otherworldly, almost Heath Ledger Joker-like: (in Chakobsa) "Take his body to the desert. Bring the prisoners to the residency"

It's such a controversial scene because you see Paul as this manipulative power, but on the other side, I feel like Paul and the Fremen don't have a choice. There is no cost the Imperium wont pay to continue mining spice on Arrakis. It doesn't matter how many miners the Fremen destroy, the houses of the Imperium will continue coming back. It's a dark scene but to me it is 100% necessary for Paul to declare this war against the greater imperium, otherwise the Fremen will just keep operating in the desert destroying miners until their people and way of life are inevitably destroyed.

The scene shot from above as Paul moves through the huge crowd of Freman is a visual reference to him being the Kwisatz Haderach. The great thing about how this was handled, having not read the books, is that Paul fights to the bitter end to avoid his own turn. He Is Sincere. He knows that his visions leads to chaos for himself and others. It isn't until everyone around him is pleading with him, including Chani ( and very significantly an endorsement from the spirit of Jamis) that he needs to do this and there is no alternative, that he makes the decision regretfully. You can see in the moment when he tells Chani that he will go to the south to protect her and her family, that he realizes he is going to lose Chani as a result. He communicates that to her directly. It makes his turn so much more relatable. He didn't do it for power, he didn't do it for revenge, he did it to save the Freman from Rotha, who undoubtedly was going to wipe out the south next. He was willing to stay behind alone and sacrifice his own life so that they could escape. He did it to save his love and her family. A true tragedy.

Timothy can get that Oscar. So can Javier. They're both on lock in my opinion. Austin would get it if not for Bardem. He'll still get the nod tho.
That scene is absolutely legendary. Best of the film. I don't think I can remember anything better in any film I've seen. And I'm a snob. Can you think of any scene in any film to compare it with? The Black Swan reveal in Black Swan? The final scene in Whiplash?
It's beyond transformation. It's a scene that hits within the ego of every man. Both as a leader and a follower. If you wouldn't follow a man this convincing, I don't know what to tell you. It crystallizes an underlying theme in the book. Anyone is capable of being swept up into a cult. It's the human condition we like to think is just for mentally ill people. I wish that scene would have converted Chani, just to drive that point home, even more than it already did. But I understand why they did it this way.
Unreal moment. We'd spent 5 hours getting to know Paul. Then we finally meet the Messiah. And he checks that box like Jesus walking on water in front of our eyes.
My favorite part of the scene is when he tells the Freman warrior, who looks absolutely murderous, that he's praying to his grandmother right now. And gives her back story. His kneeling reaction is beyond real. Faith can humble the hardest human being ever made.
The wise old man behind Paul is humbled next with a description of his dreams. He's trembling with fear and shame for ever being arrogant enough to remain standing before Paul. His kneeling is so apologetic.
Finally Stilgar. It's the greatest moment of his life. It's literally a sexual experience for him. The purpose of his existence coming to fruition. Paul gets him all the way there. Then later takes him even further. But that moment is the closest we have seen to a male giving birth.
Chani is used unrealistically to keep us tethered to reality. But it's ok. It's just the problem of time constraints in film adaptations. Marvelous in the end. I do have a feeling they shot it both ways. And decided to keep her character from swinging back and forth. And probably removed another 20 minutes from the runtime. There are clues in the editing that point to it. And I have a feeling that was the majority of the delays to it's final cut. Oppenheimer got lucky in that regard haha
Everyone needs to curb their expectations for part 3. It will not be what anyone thinks. Certainly not the book. Impossible to do in one film.
