So based on your Twitter rating you didn't really give the show more than 5 very often. If this doesn't satisfy melon what shows am I missing out on that are blowing it out of the water.
If you see my post above fantano just misunderstood the ending, the point was that it was a simulation made to calculate how many times in 1000 iterations would you "hang the dj" ergo leave and fight the system in the simulation to be with that person. the simulation itself had no actual philosophical message because the system was meant to be beaten and calculated how many times would you beat it with the person its testing compatibility with. There was no overall message about tech being "good"

I think you completely misunderstood hang the dj. The episode wasn't encouraging you to take away a theme of "ooo trust the computer" because in order to reach a 99.8% success rate you had to betray it 998/1000 times. imo the whole premise and ending is revealed to be a play on the simulation argument. i think the episode encouraged you to think about how ultimately, love and who you choose to is determined by you and not a computer, which is well demonstrated by the decision to run away so many times with a love you are told is temporary.
hang the dj most boring episode of black mirrior EVER. fake deep femmenist story, girl fucks like crazy & guy is a SIMP. Its a computer simulation in the end... how fucking wack
+Tiffany Kim The main point of the episode is actually to get the viewer to consider simulation theory; If simulations identical to how we perceive reality are indeed possible, how likely is it that we're in one right now and how would we know? The answer is it's extremely likely and we aren't sure if we'll ever be able to know. In Hang the DJ if you're a simulated personality within the dating program you are guided by an AI that actively encourages you to rebel against it. It doesn't answer any important questions and just says to trust it. When you think about this it's obviously how the program is meant to work. You know you've found your true love when your simulated personalities rebel against the dating program to find each other again. The 99.8% thing at first feels like a standard corporate publicity line but when you learn that it's a simulation it becomes clear the AI was actually being honest and trying to help. In the episode we are watching these simulated personalities 1000th run through this dating program. In order for the success rate to be 99.8% they need to successfully rebel their 1000th time. The AI before this happens says the success rate is 99.8%, it assumes the simulated personalities will succeed, it wants them too.
Actually it's kind of the opposite. The point is that in this world, "love" has been basically figured out. Real world people don't need to worry about it anymore because their simulated copies will date everyone extensively enough to figure out who you will fall in love with, probably in the blink of an eye. But the way that is found is by two people who are programmed to follow a system loving each other so much that they will abandon that system. It's both fantastically effective and ethically terrifying at the same time, which is why it's so good.
Thought about that as well, but it didn't really explain why it didn't call for backup at that point, since the end showed how many of the dog robots there were wandering around.

I'm shocked Anthony didn't get the episode, I'd have thought someone with his intellect would grasp it, seemed pretty obvious. Oh well, still by far the best episode it's a shame Fantano didn't understand it and then gave one of his most embarrassing reviews, I think he should stick to music lol
Because it was still a nice journey through human interaction and emotion, it wasn't pointless, sure it was a little hard on the simulated beings, but for the real world couple it very much did have a point as now they are going to spend their lives with their soul mate. It's also nice as it doesn't quantify the love between two individuals, the fact that the high technological device works in the way it does suggests that the love between two individuals can't be predicted based off their traits and instead uses a highly sophisticated trial and error kind of system, which is kinda nice.

mightybison15 I feel like the reason why people didn’t like the episode is because its purpose is untraditional. Most people (even me) go into a Black Mirror episode expecting a message or lesson and instead with this episode we got something informative about how a dating app might work.
I disagree with Hang the DJ, I think it was the best of the season (and I disliked San Junipero). The acting was superb and so was the writing. I don't think the entire message of the episode is happy go lucky, as 998 exact simulations experience months of unwanted relationships and an existential crisis, all for the possibility of a relationship for the characters in real life. Even the "trust the system" motif is followed there, as there's no guarantee that they'll actually stay together.
I thought the new season was fine, and while that might be ok for any other show, I expected WAAAAAY more from Black Mirror, especially after its incredible 3rd season. Still have to watch Black Museum tho
Alex Bark black museums pretty amazing. I think black mirror lived up to its standards in at least 4 of the 6 episodes. Its incredible to me that it can maintain its standards at all. Usually shows this good get destroyed by the hype.
not many people I know watched it on Channel 4 or knew about it, lucky it didn't start on Netflix and managed to find its legs a bit before then. I think National Anthem was the point most people noped out but it was the first ep lol
It's not a plot hole it's operating under the assumption that a technological singularity has made it possible for DNA to be mapped and codified completely. This is a common line of thinking from the transhumanist crowd it's believed to be plausible. The brain is a computer executing complex algorithms we don't understand and memories are just information and the same goes for DNA. I mean we call it genetic code for crying out loud.
+Denzel Mccray Really dude? Here's your source: Google "Transhumanism" and proceed to read about it. You don't need to believe the ideas to accept that these are real ideas people have.
SikeSplitter yea, I’ve learned not to trust what people say on the internet just because they believe it. I prefer to have information that has been verified by others in the scientific community. Most people in these comment sections just say stuff they heard or read somewhere without verifying the information first. As the person who you are making a scientific statement to, the burden of proof is on you. Simply saying to google it is not sufficient evidence to convince me of said information. I prefer peer reviewed articles, not regular articles from non-peer reviewed sources. Thank you.
The twist of hang the dj was that their world and 999 others were simulations that took place in a dating app, to aproximate the compatability of the couple.
Kind of missed the point that the Hang the Dj episode showed only one of the 1000 simulations. And 98% of the scenarios ended in match. Also, the robo dogo episode. That box of teddy bears. Each bear could be a person, like the monkey in last episode. Mind blown!
@29:50 ish, the robot's leg was broken, the one with the gun on it. It couldn't yet send the signal to the other robots to track her because they did that through the shrapnel/frag grenade thingy. It then had to recharge because she ran its battery life through.
Definitely the weakest season so far. The direction and production are great across the board, but there were a lot of recycled ideas that took me out of the experience. 'Black Museum," was basically "White Christmas," down to the 'cookie-esque' technology used on the comatose wife.
Swooce exactly what I thought, it was trying so hard to be like white Christmas but was so contrived and the stories were just random and didn't even join together
In Arkangel they do mention that she was part of a trail and it was never fully rolled out. Although as a story idea it would've been more interesting if othr characters also had the technology.
I don't know if the ending of the first episode is necessarily a happy one. Sure it was pretty twisted that he copied his coworkers but essentially a dudes video game comes to life and murders him.
Honestly if you even just play the Sims to enact your twisted fantasies about people you know in real life you are mentally fucked and deserve something bad to happen to you.
yeah but hes the villian, they didnt really try to make us sympathetic to him either (like they have in the past), other than people not respecting him even though hes their boss ?? i hate to be that guy but its very typically american lol
Yeah. I thought there'd be some kind of twist where, he wouldn't die, he'd just get forcefully booted from the game. The 'Nice lady' from work would of exposed him. He would of got fired and end up doing jail time or getting fired and working in some shitty job or something like that. It would of also been cool, if the wormhole just deleted them all, kinda leaving the audience to acknowledge them as data, despite them (ARGUABLY) being real people.
You missed something in Metalhead. The robot’s arm was damaged when the car fell off the cliff, and that’s why it couldn’t climb up the tree. That also happened to be the arm with the gun in it.
The technology in the USS Callister made no sense. Digitally recreating a person based on their DNA does not mean that their conscienceness would be replicated as well. Also, this process would not account for epigenetic biologic changes. This was extremely lazy science fiction. I however did enjoy the acting and the Star trek theme.
hang the dj was my favorite episode, I thought it was really sweet. I didn’t see the twist at all, and my mouth was dropped open when it happened. It was basically like, out of 1,000 lifetimes, I picked you every time.
and definitely not trolling, Hang teh DJ was the most interesting idea wth the best execution this season... people will hate on it just because it was a romcom
Anthony if she saw her friend get turned into a monster and flung out into space how does it not make any sense that she'd be nice to him next time to see them to try and avoid such a fate. Is this the nonsense I'm gonna faced with all through this review smh
I thought that was supposed to be the point of the program? When the simulations where the couples are prepared to risk their lives for each other just so they can be together, the computer knows they are the perfect match. If they dont rebel they aren't that well matched? Also maybe its again another comment on consciousness in computers and if the simulations are real or not?
I agree. Black Mirror exposes these brilliant, shocking ideas on technology but execute them poorly. There’s so much potential for exploration of these ideas, yet they just don’t push them in the right direction story wise. Our curiosity is piqued, only to be dissatisfied.
that’s literally the point of those episodes , they have brilliant ideas for new tech but the episodes explain how society ends up using the tech for bad
Damn Anthony I peeped those scores and I gotta say buddy this is looking like it is going to be a rough ride for me... this season sucked to be fair but Callister with a 7? Callister vs Kendrick video when?
Speaking for myself, but melon we'd love to see REACTION videos to big/hyped up albums - like I would have loved to see your first reactions when listening to TPAB and I hope you record yourself listening to the next kendrick album
Matt 2 its probably a really big difference between experiencing an album in your own space at your own leisure, and having a camera pointed at you. my read of anthony as a person says he wont do this, and id rather experience an album with my pals anyway because their reactions and immediate thoughts would be genuine and more personal
A lot of your points are pretty valid when looked at from a purely realistic point, but I think the problem is this season was based a lot less on realism than previous seasons and more focused on morals. Like the whole guinea pig thing is obviously ridiculous, but it was less about the fact they could coax memories out of a guinea pig and more about the idea of no matter how much you try to cover up the bad things you've done, something's gonna bring you down.
Plump Potato Rump I never totally liked that episode, It cool but when you look back at It It's a police procedural when a prime minister has to fuck a pig. Interesting by itself, but technology Is very marginal, although the ending moral is kinda cool. But if Black mirror, was all like that, i wouldnt have continued it
Moving Fifteen million merits Is incredible too, loved It so much It made me go on with Black mirror since i liked the First episode but was not sure about continuing it
Glad to hear your opinion, I had a debate at work about the whole guinea pig part and found that many of them defended the ending. We live in a sick world.
You dont understand the theories behind the episodes, also you missed many points like in the arkangel you found odd that only that girl had that technology but actually the girl one of a small amount of beta testers of this product wich eventually got banned.
John Koroliov still, why was that the story? They introduced this interesting concept then just wasted it.This entire story has basically been told a hundred times before, the episode would be almost unchanged if the technology wasn't present and they just replaced the vision with her following her daughter. It was just a wasteful of their concept. They could've done so much more with it.
TheTitaniteSlob I think the point of the episode was not to introduce this new technology and show all its shiny features, but to show how fast humans take advantage of not only the technology, but also their child attached to this technology. The story illustrated to us that it was a free trial, which already poses a red flag, then we later learn that it was banned after only seemingly a few years...yet the mother still had the technology to view her daughters every move. Again, I think this story is not so much about the technology and rather the abuse of the technology and what it can do to humans and their families.
Harleen Quinzel I don't really follow what you're trying to say. At it's core, black mirror has always been about the technology and showing how that might shape the future of our world. This season lacked a lot of that imo, which is fine, it's never explicitly stated that what I said is what Black Mirror has to be. In this episode the technology barely played a role, everything that the techology did, story wise, could've been achieved through a lot of other means. My big problem with this episode is that this story is just one big boring trope. The amount of tv shows and characters that i've seen with almost this exact story line, is ridiculous. So when you couple that with the fact that the technology provides very little in providing a new take on a old story line, and the fact that the characters were not interesting at all. It just makes for a bad episode, imo.
TheTitaniteSlob yes, Black Mirror has mostly had episode that were and are technology focused, whether that be made up technology that take place in the future or current technology like we saw in “Shut up and Dance”. However, even though the technology is at the forefront of the show, the episodes are really about the characters and how they deal with this technology. Technology can be both a blessing and a curse. It can always go wrong. Even the creator of Black Mirror said himself that while the show incorporates technology, it’s not trying say that technology is evil or flawed, but that we have humans are the flawed ones that don’t know how to adapt to certain technology. Also, I don’t think that by her mother being a helicopter parent and just following her around would have the same effect. She could literally see things through her daughters eyes. She saw a guy fucking her daughter through her eyes. She saw her snort coke through her eyes. It’s well beyond crossing the boundaries of personal space. Overall, I really enjoyed the episode and I see the message it was conveying to the audience.
The black museum episode was at least a light 8 or strong 7, I get that there were a few plot holes, but that aside it was the most "black mirror" episode and very compelling.
TheBluDitto inside No. 9 is great. It's a lot more stagey and theatrical that Black Mirror in terms of direction, but is less limited due to the premise of every episode not being tied directly into technology. I also think it pulls off sucker punches and sweet moments more deftly than Black Mirror and is a lot less formulaic. That said, there is an episode that's a House of the Devil rip off, but I guess nobody is perfect.
Crocodile: They state that the version of the technology that law enforcement uses are more advanced now, that's why the older tech has made it's way into the civilian sector. Hang the DJ: Hey someone who didn't love this episode, that's kind of refreshing. I thought it was one of the stronger episodes this season, but agreed, it was basically San Junipero lite. Metal head: You liked that one more than most reviewers, first time Iv'e heard some one say it was better than hang the DJ. Big Fan of your Music reviews, cool to see you do something different!
"Why does the hospital allow them to offer patients experimental treatment?" How is that different from experimental drug trials in hospitals these days? And hasn't the point of a lot of black mirror episodes up to this point been often new technologies being misused? Like the shows called black mirror cus the point is that the technologies are not evil, but the shows an exploration of the negative things about ourselves that they reflect back. So yeah, the idea that medical research might not begin to incorporate technology (even though it already has see bionics or whatever it's called) is silly, stop being so silly.
I totally disagree. I think that season 4 is in second place behind the third considering that the "White Christmas" episode isn't a part of season 2. "USS Callister", "Hang the DJ" and "Black Museum" are the highlights of the season. "Fifteen Million Merits", "White Christmas" and "San Junipero" are still my overall top 3 though.
1. A few times in Hang the DJ, the computer says it has a 99.8% success rate. 2. At the end, you find out 99.8% of the same simulations ended up together because they rebelled AGAINST what the computer was saying. Like it literally says "1000 simulations completed, 998 rebellions logged". Just from these two things, how can you draw ANY other conclusion than: the "success" was actually not following a dating app/system in hope of an "ultimate match", and going with with how you actually feel?

Loi-Boy as Fantano said, there wasn’t really a lot to understand. Pretty simple concept. Just not that interesting.
mightybison15 I feel like the reason why people didn’t like the episode is because its purpose is untraditional. Most people (even me) go into a Black Mirror episode expecting a message or lesson and instead with this episode we got something informative about how a dating app might work.
HARD disagree on Hang The DJ.
I don't think he understood the ending tbh
AlienSphinkter maybe I didn't either but I thought the episode was predictable and bland
Yeah he totally didn't. He said "Its as if they were meant to do it the entire time." YEAH BECAUSE THEY WERE LMAO
You've got Hang the DJ all wrong, it had 3 flaws but apart from that it was beautiful. Sometimes Anthony, you need to feel and not think
Ben McNulty the fact that the best episode of the season was barely 'decent' for me really says a lot about what this show has come to
Emotionless Melon
Hang the dj was dumb af
Hang the DJ was a live-action Emoji Movie and that's not a compliment.
Alex Bark same
Alex Bark black museums pretty amazing.
Hang the DJ a 3.... Anthony that's just not funny
that twist in the end made the whole episode. badanthony tastetano
You’re a good guy, I know it. But just because the mirror is black, there is no need to refer to it as “banjo lips”
GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA GHA omg
Jesus fucking christ that's perfect
more like coughtony alotano
Plot hole in USS Callister: DNA does not carry memories. Those simulations should have been mere clones, with no memories whatsoever.
Denzel Mccray IF U DIE IN THE GAME U DIE IRL
yea; some stupid plot holes this season.
SikeSplitter please provide your peer reviewed sources
Did he really not get twist of the episode?
The point is that, thats barely a twist. Thats a super boring "twist".
R de R Yeah shit twist
If you think that, fair enough but he didn't even get that it was all a simulation.
He acknowledges it I just dont think he words it in a way that makes it seem like he understood it.
Good review just thought the nazi propaganda was a bit unnecessary
I thought he went a little too far when he said that the baby in Crocodile should’ve been gassed because it was blind.
That is too much. He should apologize for that.
Hold on... how are you gonna give Arkangel a 6??? That was definitely the most boring episode! It didn’t even do anything crazy!
"The fact that they ran off together seemed almost by design"
YA DONT SAY?!?!?!?!?!
Kind of missed the point that the Hang the Dj episode showed only one of the 1000 simulations. And 98% of the scenarios ended in match.
Also, the robo dogo episode. That box of teddy bears. Each bear could be a person, like the monkey in last episode. Mind blown!
underrated comment
Hang the dj was good, the twist was quite clever
@29:50 ish, the robot's leg was broken, the one with the gun on it. It couldn't yet send the signal to the other robots to track her because they did that through the shrapnel/frag grenade thingy. It then had to recharge because she ran its battery life through.
Definitely the weakest season so far. The direction and production are great across the board, but there were a lot of recycled ideas that took me out of the experience. 'Black Museum," was basically "White Christmas," down to the 'cookie-esque' technology used on the comatose wife.
Swooce exactly what I thought, it was trying so hard to be like white Christmas but was so contrived and the stories were just random and didn't even join together
callum clancy random? Did you miss the part where the narrator was involved in every story?
Can't believe you gave USS Callister the same score as DAMN. smh
The new season tried to cater to a mainstream American audience too much.
Did they start putting in fart jokes or something?
How?
Xpry By being less complex and less thought provoking.
6666 that has nothing to do with "catering to American audiences."
Josh Leitzel Of course it does. Americans generally don't like thinking.
Goingthony Baldtano
His hair is actually a critique of the fading moral standards in society.
Joel Mais Going? Gone.
He’s doing himself a favor, if you’ve seen his videos where he grew out his hair you know
He is destined to be a melon
Gladthony Ihavegoodgeneticstano!
Black mirror worst to best WHEN!?
Archangel worst national anthem best
white bear is the only good one they've made
Best: Fifteen Million Merits
Worst: The Entire History Of You
Best: First season
Worst:
hang the dj a 3 ??????? come on melon
What makes it good anyway? The digital world copout makes the whole episode redundant for rewatching it.
I actually liked Hang the DJ :(
In Arkangel they do mention that she was part of a trail and it was never fully rolled out. Although as a story idea it would've been more interesting if othr characters also had the technology.
I don't know if the ending of the first episode is necessarily a happy one. Sure it was pretty twisted that he copied his coworkers but essentially a dudes video game comes to life and murders him.
hamish hill I would say it was a happy ending. The guy got what he deserved.
Black mirror did not originate on the BBC. It was Channel 4
Anthony, I would love to see more film and television reviews from you
Hes skipping a lot of key points in these episodes I think you should give them a second look
Facts
You missed something in Metalhead. The robot’s arm was damaged when the car fell off the cliff, and that’s why it couldn’t climb up the tree. That also happened to be the arm with the gun in it.
So funny to see him miss the point on many of these episodes (especially Hang the DJ)
Shimmy Krumholtz yeah for real he didn't even understand the ending....
Shimmy Krumholtz this is what happen when the person is more interesting in mocking the hype then just watch the freaking show
What was the point of Hang The DJ? Tell me
yo i wanna know the point too! i think that epi is overhyped af
GewoonRood Are you really that stupid?
Hang the dj was at least a strong 6 to 7
Uss was a 4 logically inconsistent but still fun
The technology in the USS Callister made no sense. Digitally recreating a person based on their DNA does not mean that their conscienceness would be replicated as well. Also, this process would not account for epigenetic biologic changes. This was extremely lazy science fiction. I however did enjoy the acting and the Star trek theme.
What if their DNA has been fully mapped and codified? What if consciousness is quantifiable?
Omgg i hope you review the new season 6, this is so cool I only knew about you reviewing this show just now.
hang the dj was my favorite episode, I thought it was really sweet. I didn’t see the twist at all, and my mouth was dropped open when it happened. It was basically like, out of 1,000 lifetimes, I picked you every time.
Hang the DJ was the best episode of the season
Black Museum >>>>>>>>
trolling
Black Museum was nonsensical trash
and definitely not trolling, Hang teh DJ was the most interesting idea wth the best execution this season... people will hate on it just because it was a romcom
Anthony if she saw her friend get turned into a monster and flung out into space how does it not make any sense that she'd be nice to him next time to see them to try and avoid such a fate. Is this the nonsense I'm gonna faced with all through this review smh
This video is gonna piss me off
USS - 8.5
Ark - 8
Croc - 4.5
HTDJ - 9
Metalhead - 5
BM - 10
Spot on mate
It’s amazing that you can review shows just as well as you can review music!!! This is great content!!! Keep it up!!!
Damn it Melon not all British TV is from the BBC, Black Mirror is a channel 4 show.
Fucking colonials at it again.
From music reviewer to meme reviewer to anime reviewer, we've come so far.
FluxIncapacitator that’s right. Pretty sure the plot of Hang the DJ went right over melon’s melon.
More like
USS Calister- 9
Arkangel- 7
Crocodile- 6
Hang the DJ- 8
Metalhead- 6
Black Museum- 9
USS Calister- 9
Arkangel- 5
Crocodile- 5.5
Hang the DJ- 6.5
Metalhead- 5
Black Museum- 7.5
How to describe theneedledrop in 3 words 25:33
Melon, your opinion and political videos give me life
That Guinea-pig thing was telegraphed super hard and I kept trying to tell myself it wasn't gonna play out that way.
Rank your favorite black mirror episodes!
Alejandro Barrera
The one where the Prime Minister has to fuck a pig, will always be fucking amazibgly tragic to me.
Alejandro Barrera Shut up and dance, White Christmas, White bear, Black Museum, San junipero
Plump Potato Rump I never totally liked that episode, It cool but when you look back at It It's a police procedural when a prime minister has to fuck a pig. Interesting by itself, but technology Is very marginal, although the ending moral is kinda cool. But if Black mirror, was all like that, i wouldnt have continued it
Fifteen Million Merits and San Junipero >>>>>
Moving Fifteen million merits Is incredible too, loved It so much It made me go on with Black mirror since i liked the First episode but was not sure about continuing it
eveything you said about hang the dj is wrong and you should stop now
hang the dj is overrated dogshit and i know im a year late but it blows ass
Glad to hear your opinion, I had a debate at work about the whole guinea pig part and found that many of them defended the ending. We live in a sick world.
Another running theme for some of them in this season is Pizza! BTW How many times does Fantano say the word "like"??
You dont understand the theories behind the episodes, also you missed many points like in the arkangel you found odd that only that girl had that technology but actually the girl one of a small amount of beta testers of this product wich eventually got banned.
John Koroliov still, why was that the story? They introduced this interesting concept then just wasted it.This entire story has basically been told a hundred times before, the episode would be almost unchanged if the technology wasn't present and they just replaced the vision with her following her daughter. It was just a wasteful of their concept. They could've done so much more with it.
John Koroliov Black Mirror doesn't need theories, just enjoy the interesting stories. It seems that it's your first exposure to good writing?
The cops said the baby was blind when they were in the house btw
I can't believe you rated Hang The DJ a 3 >:o
Melon can't stop dropping spicy content, he is not human but just pure anthropomorphic spice.
Watch 'Inside No.9'. Kind of like black mirror - British, horror anthology. On netflix and iplayer.
Shearsmith and Pemberton are geniuses at mixing comedy and horror, all three of the shows they created have been fantastic.
Damn thanks bruh.
Is it on US Netflix?
I don't know. I assumed all netflixs are the same. I live in the UK.
You didn't understand Hang the DJ
Toph Beifong fuck off youre blind
Buns Sounds like you’re scared, the pebble
Toph Beifong You’re blind just like the Crocodile baby.
Channel 4 not bbc get your facts right
I really liked the guinea pig twist, same with hang the DJ. Still you make very valid points. Your reviews are always structured so well!
This is excellent Blackthony Mirtano. I like that you're expanding to other media
It's just a simulation bro
who tf watched this whole thing
i played it in 2x speed
Me
lucas I give this thing an Eazy E.
Weird that you didn't seem to watch any episodes, melon. You spent half an hour just talking about "the blacks." Smh.
I'm glad someone hated the Guinea Pig Memory plot twist as much as I did.
Arkangel more like light 2
"Why does the hospital allow them to offer patients experimental treatment?" How is that different from experimental drug trials in hospitals these days? And hasn't the point of a lot of black mirror episodes up to this point been often new technologies being misused? Like the shows called black mirror cus the point is that the technologies are not evil, but the shows an exploration of the negative things about ourselves that they reflect back. So yeah, the idea that medical research might not begin to incorporate technology (even though it already has see bionics or whatever it's called) is silly, stop being so silly.
I loved uss callister
You are objectively incorrect.
Pointless gimmicky username your are objectively incorrect because they made a subjective statement of personal preference
