I loved that he made his first movie with the great Philip Baker Hall in a leading role. Just a great underrated actor from the older generation. He had some charisma. My god. PTA has an eye for everything.
How could he not care about the 2nd half of Boogie Nights ….the last 45 min of that movie is one of the greatest wind ups in cinema history. You feel the Coke binges coming to a head. It’s perfect.
The last 45 min of Boogie Nights is one of the greatest wind up endings in cinema history. You literally feel the Coke binges coming to a head as it all just explodes into madness. I don’t get Louis CK saying that at all.
I personally loved the second half of Boogie Nights just as much. It's all opinion but I do find it compelling and interesting. With all that character development and the party aspect of the first act, I always feel sufficiently invested in seeing what happens to those characters. Even after seeing it a hundred times.
Louis criticizing PTA as “he was learning…I didn’t care about the 2nd half…” This is from the guy that made Pooty Tang his debut and still managed to make it boring and slow paced. He had a successful tv show. He’s NEVER made a critically acclaimed, award winning movie yet.
His show was brilliant, and part of it is because he wasn't trying to pander and reach the general public. It's so bizarre and surreal at times it's hard to believe it actually won Emmys.
Firstly, very weird criteria. Someone who has failed in the past is simply not permitted to criticize other art? By this metric, you would also not be allowed because one can safely assume you are a worse filmmaker than Louis CK. Secondly, Horace and Pete contains some of the greatest writing you'll find in any piece of art within the last decade. You want to know who is a fan of Horace and Pete? Paul Thomas Anderson. Thirdly, using "slow pace" as a pejorative exposes your lack of knowledge. Slow is a certain type of cinema, not a flaw and Pootie Tang doesn't even qualify.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Fully taking into account his oeuvre, if Scorsese were not alive, Paul Thomas Anderson would be the greatest living American director.
And he never got better than those two first films, imo. Boogie Nights in the only PTA film I can gladly rewatch. "There Will Be Blood" is DDL's triumph, not PTA's. "The Master" had moments, I suppose, but not enough for me to rewatch the movie.
Like all great films, There Will be Blood is a joint triumph. Really can't count out PTA's extraordinary skill, it surpasses anyone else working in Hollywood today imo. Magnolia and The Master are two films I would definitely rewatch. Both are so rich in character.
This sounds made-up but I was JUST watching the scene where Mark Wahlberg sings "You got the touch" in the studio. It's how talented Louis is. Between comedy and himself a filmmaker, and a good one too.
The first half of Boogie Nights is basically a carbon copy of Goodfellas. The second half, which is excellent, feels pretty much like a trial run for Magnolia.

John C. Riley is seriously one of the most underrated actors and it’s a bit frustrating that people only know for Step Brothers and Wreck it Ralph.
State of Grace, Hamburger Hill, Dolores Claiborne....

pta = goat
Hard Eight is the most underrated PTA movie and my favorite after There Will Be Blood. Phillip Baker Hall owns that movie.
Yes, I completely agree.
Didn't care for the second half of BOOGIE NIGHTS? Gimme a break. Wish he explained himself there.
The movie ends with a man exposing himself in a dressing room so you'd figure that'd be right up his alley.

Pooty Tang was out of his control and didn't turn out how he liked.
@@Ray_D_Tutto he still shot a lot of unfunny footage
Not surprised Louie disregards the last half of the film. I mean why would he care about the downfall of perversion and self-hatred?
Right?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Fully taking into account his oeuvre, if Scorsese were not alive, Paul Thomas Anderson would be the greatest living American director.
Either him or David O. Russel (although he's a garbage human).
No.
Cringe!
I feel like Hard Eight is way too underrated

What about Punch Drunk Love?

When did Louis Coke Kaine become a critic?
