Tradition and innovation merge in the elegant city center of Tokyo
Built on the site of an Edo period (1603-1868) silver mint, Ginza is a historic district with a confidently elegant feel. The main street is home to some of Tokyo's oldest department stores, and many people still come here to enjoy the unparalleled service befitting the world-class products on offer. The side streets of Ginza offer a very unique experience with numerous boutiques and small but fine bistros. Rather than resting on its reputation, Ginza continues to evolve with the times, offering sophisticated modernity, energy and the charm of old Tokyo.
Ginza's landscape of traditional department stores has received an invigorating facelift in recent years with the opening of Ginza Six, an emerging complex of fashion stores and restaurants catering to the global consumer, and Tokyu Plaza Ginza. Japanese companies are also joining this wave of development and are investing their considerable resources, among other things, in the elegant shopping and dining idyll of Ginza Place and the renovation of a Ginza veteran, the Sony Building (the renovation work will last until 2024). Under no circumstances should you forget a visit to the long-established department stores, including Ginza Mitsukoshi, Matsuya Ginza and Wako.
