Ghazwa Uhud was a significant battle fought in 625 CE (3 AH) during the early years of Islam between the Muslim forces of Medina, led by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the Quraysh of Mecca. It took place near Mount Uhud, on the outskirts of Medina, and followed the Muslims' victory at the Battle of Badr the previous year.
The Quraysh, led by Abu Sufyan, sought to avenge their defeat at Badr and assembled a large army of approximately 3,000 soldiers. In response, the Prophet Muhammad mobilized around 1,000 Muslim fighters. However, 300 men, led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy, a hypocrite, withdrew from the Muslim army before the battle began, leaving the Muslims with only 700 combatants.
The battle strategy initially favored the Muslims, who gained the upper hand. The Prophet positioned a group of archers on a strategic hill, instructing them to hold their ground no matter what happened. However, as victory seemed imminent, many of the archers disobeyed these orders and left their posts to collect the spoils of war. This created an opening that the Quraysh cavalry, led by Khalid ibn al-Walid (who later embraced Islam), exploited, turning the tide of the battle.
The Muslims suffered heavy losses, and the Prophet himself was injured. Among the martyrs was Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib, the beloved uncle of the Prophet, who was killed and mutilated by Wahshi, a slave acting on orders from Hind bint Utbah.‪@Thekohistani‬
