Legend. The man traversed the history of jazz. How great that he endured this long. Jimmy was playing Blue Note and Smalls up til quite recently.
Kind of Blue is the perfect album in many ways. It's timeless and impossible to grow weary of. Sketches is so moody. Full House is a great album. The title track is awesome, but I really love S.O.S. Jimmy's uptempo ride is sweet--I like how he always was in that space btw'n the triplet and the quarter note. Very sensitive player, but also really called out the quarter note.
Thanks for giving the drummer some, Rick! Jimmy is important.

He was there as part of the International Association of Jazz Educators Annual Conference. It was absolutely life changing for me. Every performance I saw was phenomenal from The Yellowjackets to Renee Rosnes to John Pattitucci Group, Dave Weckl Band, Oscar Peterson, Benny Green & Russell Malone.... so many other legends. Meeting Mr. Cobb was a very casual thing. He was very pleasant to all of us present. The whole event is something I’ll never forget for as long as I live.

There's soooo many different stylings of jazz from the early New Orleans sound of the late 19th century across the Swing era of the 30s to the atonal Free Jazz stylings of the 60s through the Jazz Rock and Fusion of the 70s up to contemporary Jazz that encompasses all of these styles and mixes them with whatever influences and instrumentation the composer, band, artist likes. It is unlikely that you dislike all of them :)

@@bernhardkrickl3567, the New Orleans, Swing era, & smooth jazz are the among jazz that i can digest easily. While the rest of the styles probably, i may have to develop good hearing sense to appreciated them.
Since jazz is arguably a highest form of music, i guess certain jazz genre could only appeals to or appreciated by seasoned musicians.
But hey, i really like Coltrane's Giant Steps, maybe i could handle some hard jazz stuff out there.

RIP Mr. Cobb I am a fan of Kind of Blue, and your work, a milestone in music history for sure. I dig the be-bop daddy-o.

“He was a very special and unusual person - a gifted musician with natural talent, like an athlete. And a gifted human being with a great, happy personality,” his wife Eleana said.
“He played all around the world. He was vibrant up until the end,” she said. “It’s a big deal that he’s gone. It’s very painful. I’m a little bit in shock.”

Fabulous tribute, Rick. I was in tears. Cobb outlived the rest of the crew by decades. Those albums are landmark works, no doubt. I have most of them, and there's nothing to compare. This kind of music just doesn't exist anymore. Pity.
How I wish I could have been on hand to see the Half Note sessions. I did manage to see Wes in person in DC in '67, just months before he died. So that will have to suffice. It was a great evening. I was just 17.

heckler73 that was my very first thought.... Lars is far too arrogant to be watching such an inspirational music teacher - especially given the subject matter is Jazz.

The last living member of one of the greatest ever jazz recordings: ‘Kind of Blue’. Jimmy Cobb leaves an incredible legacy. RIP.

Jimmy Cobb was a true legend. My dad was a Wes Montgomery lover and would play his records for me in the early 60s when I was a kid. I didn't really understand how important those musicians were until I was older. I liked them though. Thanks for this tribute to Cobb.

Shocking. Just yesterday I stumbled upon a documentary on Miles Davis on Netflix. Jimmy Cobb was interviewed on it, and talked about "Kind of Blue". I was amazed that he was still alive. And this morning when I got a notification about THIS video. I was shocked by this amazing coincidence. RIP Jimmy Cobb.
