A backlink is a link from somebody else's website or web property of some type, that links "to your website" or "Back to your website from theirs", hence why they call it a backlink. They're just links from 'anywhere' back to your site. Some are worthless and can be gotten for pennies per thousand. Some cost an easy $2500 or more each!
