I have both of these versions but never realized the floor in Goro's Lair was crap on Genesis. I also never noticed how compressed Scorpion's "Get Over Here!" sounds on Genesis. Nice to see them side by side. I just wish the music matched the correct arenas on Sega CD.
It makes sense, the advantages of CD version: Sega CD didn't added horsepower to Genesis, just disc space. So they improved animation (space for more sprites), and sound. In the other hand, loading before the fight, when Shang Tsung transforms, and before the fatalities, which breaks the gameplay flow. Back in the day, it wouldn't worth to buy the Sega CD version, if you had the cartridge.
SEga CD is a lot better, I cant understand those people that cant see that. Lots of animations, lots of frames, a lot of sounds, new opening. Only problem (if we can say it is a problem) is the wrong music and the loading (that are not so long).
@@dijabreu The arcade board may not even have much more advanced fm than the MD so with the cd version you're probably getting the arcade plus added cleaning up and maybe reverb or something. The raw fm synth from the md is very clear.

The Sega CD could have been better if not for the loading times and many of the music on the wrong stages. It got everything else right with Sub-Zero correct stance, more voices overs and more frames of animations. However the Genesis just plays a bit better and faster thanks to no loading times despite all the missing details. The Genesis music alone makes it different and unique. And it's something I come to appreciate.
A versão Sega CD possui as músicas do arcade mas não correspondem aos respectivos cenários com exceção do The Pit e do Throne Room. Possui também as falas do narrador e alguns efeitos sonoros. Mas visualmente não mudou quase nada. Apenas a chama no segundo cenário e os corpos no cenário do Reptile. Não conseguiram nem colocar a lua no cenário das estátuas. Fora que tem os loads quando enfrenta o Shang Tsung. Achei um trabalho bem preguiçoso. Não sei se valia a pena o investimento.
I think the CD version looks like the Sega 32X version, but now it includes "free blood" without using the "ABACABB" code, and it looks way cooler with the updated lifebar hud, but they changed the stage musics, like the Courtyard, it has the "The Pit 1(reference to the number coding of Mortal Kombat Trilogy)", or even outside of it (The Courtyard), at the Buddha Statue stage, it has the "VS GORO in Goro's Lair", but they have their reasons, and its okay.

Shame that sub uses the scorpion's stance in sega genesis, I think there was no need for that, mk2 is bigger and every ninja has his own stance in that same console.

Why are they not able to include this small upgrades and details who make the differences in the Megadrive-version. The system could handle it easy. I had this game and love it but I can't understand why the programmers were so lazy...
Time and space limitations. The cartridge doesn't have the near unlimited storage space of the CD. Plus they were working on a major time crunch to get the game ready for Mortal Monday.

And that extra time was a big part of the reason why they were able to polish many of the shortcomings of the Genesis version. Not all of them, as things like color counts and resolution were no different between the CD and base system.
The Sega CD effort was a piss poor effort. Music in the wrong stages, long load times, perhaps a bit more animation (and actual arcade music, even in the wrong places), and the same washed out colors dooms the CD version. Stick with the Genesis version if you must play a Sega version of the first MK game. Though I like Matt Furniss's efforts with games like Caveman Ninja (incredible OST on the Genesis), I absolutely hated the changes to the music on the Genesis version. Don't tweak what isn't broken to begin with.

MK1 and M K2 were literally the most popular games at the time but got some abomination ports that could have been so much better or Genesis
Str8duval Not sure what you're talking about here, the Mega Drive version is the best home port of MK1 and Ed boon has gone on record saying as much & was also highly acclaimed by all game critics that reviewed it at the time! You also have to remember this is on a 8 meg cartridge, for comparison super street fighter 2 was on a 40 meg cartridge.
RETRO GAMES BOY 78 this is my point. literally one of the biggest games of the generation was only giving the a 8 meg cartridge. I don't think the game is necessarily bag but it could have been so much much much better had they really actually spent time with it. They treated it like it was a Genesis original when it was a arcade worldwide success. Smh
Stra8duval well Street fighter 2 CE was 24meg but those extra megs cost money and SF2 CE was £60 here in the UK compared to MK 1 which was £40 so i probably wouldn't have bought it new if it was going to cost me a further £20. Also, i believe Capcom were in charge of their own home ports so that definitely makes a difference because probe certainly didn't have the kind of money to throw at a port like Capcom had. Even so, it doesn't change the fact that MK1 on the Mega Drive was an excellent port and impressed the vast majority of those that played it at the time.
RETRO GAMES BOY 78 Again it wasn't necessarily a bed game and I'm sure many people enjoyed it but you would think something is highly touted as MK1 and MK2 could have found a way to put more effort or money into it. Some of the omissions are just downright unacceptable and makes it look lazy. Sub zero's missing stance, No groans when characters are hit. Most of the voice samples being removed. Completely revision set of tracks, Missing background items, again not a bad game and probly the best 16 bit port but just wasn't able to retain the arcade feel
Because expensive add-one like that never really succeed. Basically you have to pay for two whole systems to get games that aren't really significantly better than just the base system. Not really worth the money.
I bought the Sega Cd game in the late 90's and I was so disappointed how slow Shang Tung morphed into characters I never played it again the Genesis port is superior.
Graphics: Sega CD wins - They both look identical. But the Sega CD version clearly has more frames of animation. Music: Sega CD wins - Red book audio from the arcade original. Enough said. Sound/Voices: Genesis wins - Sound effects and voice samples are terrible on the Sega CD version. How it can sound worse on the CD platform amazes me. It was the same thing with Samurai Shodown and Fatal Fury Special on the Sega CD. JVC was just terrible with porting sounds and voices on the Sega CD. They could have learned from Capcom with the excellent Final Fight CD. Gameplay: Tie

This game should have been a lot better than it was on the Genesis. It's an eyesore to look at, terrible sound in the CD version how could they get the soundtrack wrong, as well as having the same identical graphics.
Sega CD should have been its own system. The Sega CD was superior to the SNES in every way, but the fact that it was an add on to the Genesis made the graphics throttled. It had to go through the outdated VDP of the Genesis. What a stupid move.
The fighters names are called out and Shang Tsung turns his head to watch the fight and claps, in the throne room. This was in the SNES version but missing on the Genesis version.
Genesis/Megadrive Wins by having Kickass Original Music and more gore. Yes more gore on Genesis. Some of u idiots missed that in the Genesis/Megadrive versions, blood dripping from the head after A subzero rips it off. Not on the Sega CD version. It jus all comes out in one splash. Which is pretty much laziness. It's no different then an uppercut. At least on Genesis u got time 2 enjoy you're Victory by watching the boys blood dripping from the head. And Adding Blood 2 the pit and goros stages walk doesn't make the CD version more gory. If anything, taking out the blood dripping from the head on subzero's fatality makes it less gory. And as 4 the CD version having arcade music. Not matching stages kills it. Genesis version has some updated arcade music and it's own. Which only makes it cooler with a more creepy vibe. The pit stage on Genesis sounds straight out of Friday the 13th with its music. People that don't see that Genesis is best are dumb as shit. Also. The ones saying SNES is better?. Give me some of that shit. Cuz u got 2 be high as fuck. XD

Snes version was virtually unplayable because of the control lag. It looked great, sounded okay but played so awful that I felt it should have been recalled. The Genesis version can't compete with snes on graphics and audio because it's old hat to the snes. But the genesis version played as good if not better than the arcade. It was so easy to control and the music was superior to the arcade. Matt Furniss is a musical genius.
lol. are people unaware that sega started selling systems that came with 6 button controllers? I got one for christmas when i was young. The our controllers are better argument is such a bad thing to fall back on. Counting the fact that you can get the right stuff to play the game just like every other console and the fact that the ED BOON even stated in an interview that the sega version had superior handling and music that it was the superior console port. Precisely the music (which is the arcade original) ruined it all... we all so much prefered that of Megadrive !
yup just watching the fighters stances in the select screen the movements are way more fluid in the CD version.

They basically got the arcade music correct on the Sega CD but on the wrong stages! That’s what I hate. I can tolerate the load times.

Sega CD should have been its own system. The Sega CD was superior to the SNES in every way, but the fact that it was an add on to the Genesis made the graphics throttled. It had to go through the outdated VDP of the Genesis. What a stupid move.

Genesis/Megadrive Wins by having Kickass Original Music and more gore. Yes more gore on Genesis. Some of u idiots missed that in the Genesis/Megadrive versions, blood dripping from the head after A subzero rips it off. Not on the Sega CD version. It jus all comes out in one splash. Which is pretty much laziness. It's no different then an uppercut. At least on Genesis u got time 2 enjoy you're Victory by watching the boys blood dripping from the head. And Adding Blood 2 the pit and goros stages walk doesn't make the CD version more gory. If anything, taking out the blood dripping from the head on subzero's fatality makes it less gory. And as 4 the CD version having arcade music. Not matching stages kills it. Genesis version has some updated arcade music and it's own. Which only makes it cooler with a more creepy vibe. The pit stage on Genesis sounds straight out of Friday the 13th with its music. People that don't see that Genesis is best are dumb as shit. Also. The ones saying SNES is better?. Give me some of that shit. Cuz u got 2 be high as fuck. XD

GJD it sounds better than the Genesis and it doesn't require load times like the Sega cd, but Sega CD sounds really sexy
Snes version was virtually unplayable because of the control lag. It looked great, sounded okay but played so awful that I felt it should have been recalled. The Genesis version can't compete with snes on graphics and audio because it's old hat to the snes. But the genesis version played as good if not better than the arcade. It was so easy to control and the music was superior to the arcade. Matt Furniss is a musical genius.
Black Popeye SNES port is horrible. There are no arcade endings or attract mode. Fake finish moves also.
lol. are people unaware that sega started selling systems that came with 6 button controllers? I got one for christmas when i was young. The our controllers are better argument is such a bad thing to fall back on. Counting the fact that you can get the right stuff to play the game just like every other console and the fact that the ED BOON even stated in an interview that the sega version had superior handling and music that it was the superior console port. I don't know about you all, I love snes...BUT. im not gonna argue with the guy who made the game everyone argues about.
