Kindly explain the " past vertical thing"- it changes its meaning depending where one is in the turn, and also which IM sequence you are doing, yes? Approach: it means not past 90*? turn, bucket part of turn, you have to be also on your back? dolphin kicks, fly to back stroke, you can't be twisting to your back, but already there on your back as you enter dolphin kicking? Back to breast, when can you go past vertical, not til afte the push off the wall?
Lets try this again. I mangled thsi question below...: Is there something special about the IM, in Masters meets, or the 100 IM that disallows, means the following turns are not allowed? Cuz that's what I was told.. the bucket turn ( back flip), and/or crossover turn ( special coaches and swimmer's designed turn that perhaps cheats the rules, in back to breast? I know they are both tricky; it seems one has to remain on one's back ( not go " past vertical") until one TOUCHES ? Or until one does the push off?... but not allowed to be on your back ( then one must go " past vertical" after the push off, yes?
In regard to The swimmer that was DQ’d at the Olympics … I thought the announce said her head also was turned to far past vertical before she touched? Thoughts on that?

I am so old that they didn't teach us flip turns because they were too difficult.... That Bucket turn was also called the suicide turn, and as near as I can tell, that is why they allow back stroke swimmers to roll over before making their flip turns. Interesting to note that one young woman was DQ'd due to an improper turn at the Olympics. Frankly, I don't understand why flip turns are not allowed with the fly and breast stroke. Only real reasons are they don't have rules to cover it, yet....
