The Alpha Legion is the Chaos Space Marine Traitor Legion about whom the least is known. The Alpha Legion was once the XXth Legion of Astartes created during the First Founding by the Emperor of Mankind to carry out His Great Crusade to reunite all of Humanity in a new golden age under His rule. They are experts in infiltration, covert operations, misdirection and diversion tactics, and their armies contain many Chaos Cultists and other mortal agents in addition to regular Heretic Astartes.

My favorite Alpha Legion story. Probably fake but still, awesome.
A group of people were playing 40k rpg. They had a drop in who didnt know the game so they so they played a just for fun game. The guy could pick any group of space marines. Guy said he hear of alpha legion,, they wear blue right?
GM said no that's ultra marines.Player insisted they seemed cool, could he play alpha legion. Fun game so ok.
Mission involved going underground to get something. New guy wants to put a bomb in the tunnel just in case they need to flee and collapse the tunnel.
Ok. Seems a little over cautious but new player involvement is good. Dm tells new player to write it down. He does and puts the note aside.
Blah blah blah. They get the thing and are leaving. One player (not the new guy) falls behind a bit and OHNO! The player is a traitor! Traitor holds up the others, makes them throw their guns down and put the thing they got on the ground and back away. The group does.
As the traitor is walking to get the item, the new player says 'he is standing in the section of tunnel where the bomb was set. how long have we been on this mission?'
Dm, I dont know 40 mins
Player tells the dm to look at the note he put aside when he planted the bomb.
Dm picks up the note and written on. It says 'set explosive at 40 mins'
Bomb goes off killing the traitor. Everyone stares at the new player.
    New guy "I am Alpharius"

Little Trivia: Back during WWII, the UK Security Service, a.k.a. MI5, made a counter-espionage and deception operation against the Nazis where they captured Nazi agents, either real or fake, and spread disinformation to their controllers. The name of this operation? The Double-Cross System or the XX System. This operation is overseen by a committee, the Twenty committee, because the operation's name can also be read as the Roman numeral for twenty.

I am so sorry, I don't want to be the actually guy, but I don't think this will count as "actually," more trivia if anything. Two things, first, the super clean death of Alpharius, and the reaction of the alpha legion is actually the strongest evidence that it wasn't Alpharius that was killed, but instead Omegon or a random Marine. Same for Rogal Dorn being alive, every time a primarch is killed for good and certain like with Horus, Sanguinius, Konrad Curze, or Ferus Manus, the psychic impact it has on the legion is crushing, and forces them to suddenly pivot toward their unsavory habits as a whole. The death of Sanguinius had the Black Rage become more common, Ferus Manus's death cause the Iron Hands to start hacking off limbs, less because they were injured, and more because of a type of Body Dysmorphia etc. No repercussions happened when Alpharius or Dorn died.
2nd, and this is more of a funny little story, but the meme of Alpha Legion being Loyalists was addressed by GW with a story of one Alpha Legionnaire that thinks he's still loyal to the imperium.

The recent Horus Heresy 2.0 has made Alpha Legion the ultimate troll army. Their army wide ability is that whenever you want to shoot, charge or do a reaction to an Alpha Legion unit they count as being 2" farther away than they actually are. That means if night fighting is active they can stand at 23" away and shoot but you can't shoot back, if they are more than 10" away you cannot charge them and most reactions require the reacting unit to be within 12" and there are some pretty powerful reactions that let you shoot, charge, give everyone a cover save, make one dude into a sacrifice that just absorbs all the shots etc. meaning you can deny a lot of defensive power with careful positioning. I'm expecting to see a big explosion in HH Alpha Legion players in the near future.
Well that and Exodus and Armillus Dynat exist.

There's a fairly common fan theory that though the majority of the Alpha Legion turned traitor, they're unwittingly doing the work of loyalists. The fan theory goes that Alpharius turned traitor, but Omegon stayed loyal(maybe it's the other way around, maybe it's both, maybe it's neither). After Alpharius was killed at the Battle of Pluto by Rogal Dorn, Omegon took full command of the legion and began secretly waging war on the traitors.
Many people point to the Alpha Legion's actions on Vraks and other battles where they intentionally drew the attention of the Imperium to crush an out of control cult or other chaotic shenaniganeries or separatists in position to cause a whole lot of damage that the vast nightmare bureaucracy of the Imperium would normally be sluggish to respond to, or even skip over entirely.

Heres the plan to make them cooler in 40k: Get rid of all the Daemon engines, let them steal the cool new toys of loyalists like Primaris marines and repulser tanks, Let them take Imperial allied detachments who they deceived and used as meat shields, let them plant explosives before the battle that their opponents trip over, let them use the opponents units to shoot on each other because they sprung a trap or have agents within, give them sniper and scout characters to pick off named characters, let them be impossible to decapitate and have whole HQ units count as warlords, Let them infiltrate and scout or force your opponent to deploy in ways they dont want to...

Love the Alpha Legion lore and how open they are to interpretation. The armor color is so cool as well even though they have never been super powerful on the tabletop they would one of the worst to fight as a Guardsmen on a planet.

It's been a long while since I've played 40k but I've kept up with the game periodically - I love the presentation of the codices and battle reports are fun long form videos - and the Alpha Legion had two fairly recent editions where they were powerful (for CSM). There was the edition where you could essentially field infinite cultists and the one where you got enough minus to hit buffs that you could run Lord Discordants directly up the table turn 1 without getting them shot to pieces. They were especially good at objective battles. It was *really* fucking hard for your opponent to score from killing your warlord.
It probably couldn't top any metas but you could absolutely clean up at your local game stores with decent play on your part. It's a shame Bricky never got to play against them.
Favorite faction in 40k. Love the fluff (they did a bit more than that in the Heresy, Bricky), crunch, and aesthetic. They really lend themselves to the Your Dudes aspect of the game.

The Alpha Legions lore is much like they are themselves in universe. A lot of conflicting stories and various theories between the people in the know. The only "real" depictions we have seen of the alpha legion are the cases of short stories and full novels where they get a pov. Like the primarch book or the Shroud of night novel.
For example we know now that Alpharius was tought by Malcador, who founded and led the Officio Assassinorum. So it is easy to look for connections there.
Another one is that because of the whole switcheroo we saw happen in the Primarch book, the running theory is that it was Omegon who died (or maybe didn't) to Dorn. Following that because Alpharius was raised in the Imperium and omegon wasn't there is the Idea that they where each leaning towards the opposite sides.
In the end who the fuck knows
It's not unreasonable to assume that one of the twins is alive (most likely Alpharius). And that there might me a bigger part of the legion still united but duping everyone . While there are scatterd warbands who follow whoever is more convenient at that moment.

Then there's also failsauce like Kernax Voldorius.
Shy, you did the guys a disservice. You should have given them the poll results from Warhammer Community where the Alpha Legion got the most votes out of all the Traitor Legions (even got into the top 4 out of all the legions).

they are such a cool and unique legion, it's a little shame that the fluff doesn't quite translate onto the tabletop. For example, the range of miniatures heavily caters to that full on demon possession/warp mutation aesthetic which doesn't really suit them. I like a lot of the new rules they got but I feel like more could have been done there.

I realized that many of the names of actually (supposed) alpha legion marines are just really cool sounding words that would absolutely be used in a spy blockbuster as codenames, either straight up or a corrupted version of the word, which also sounds really cool when you use your “movie trailer guy voice” to say it.
