    I absolutely LOVE Thrulines! Most of the connections, are valid descendants. I follow each path, tracing out records for each person. Because of this tool, I was finally able to break down the brick wall of who my 3rd great grandparents were on my paternal line.. and all the other generations followed. I had suspected we went back through this particular family but had a difficult time finding the proof. With this tool it placed in the family I thought should be there.. Love it!

    I watched your videos on Sorting Shared Matches, and on ThruLines and boy did I learn a lot from every one of them. Snipper is great as is the DNAPainter. I found it was surprisingly fast to break up all the Common Ancestors on the Match list into family groups based on my great grandparents. Then I found it was easy to sort out a lot of the shared matches without common ancestors (above 50 cM) into those groups by using the Shared Matches by bringing up those I was sure of and clicking on the Shared Matches at the top. Then I started using the ThruLines. I did like you and started with my parents, then grandparents and worked my way up, and up, using them to add more matches to the family groups. More people were added to the Thrulines and they yielded some significant matches. Wow! Today a couple of major brick walls just tumbled to the ground. Thank you so much.

    Ok Crista, I have been less than thrilled with the ThruLines feature until today. Watched this video yesterday and decided to give it another chance and WOW! I haven't broken thru my brick wall YET, but I've spent all day getting closer based on the suggestions. A bunch of surnames that I kept running into and bumping my head against are FINALLY fleshing out (namely bc 8 children in 1 family married 5 from that mysterious surname! Duh!). I also found out how 1 match connects to my Dad on one line and to my Mom on another - thanks to the new sorting. Lol!! Keep up the great work!! 👍👐
    P.S. I also loved the _____ (underscore idea) for unknown maiden names. Glad to hear it doesn't muck up the system. Unfortunately 😉 as soon as I tried it I found the maiden name.

    Thrulines is one of the greatest innovations on Ancestry. I not only discovered new ancestral lines using Thrulines, I also verified existing lines. I know it to be accurate as several of my deceased 3rd and 4th cousins, who I had met in 1968 & 1969, showed up as my DNA matches along with their descendants. I began my genealogical journey long before computers or DNA testing. I can now research in a couple of hours what would have taken a decade back in the 70s and 80s.

    I have found over 50 matches which have been suggested to be spot on and always marvel at the results Ancestry have produced. They are not always direct ancestors but connections from their siblings. How do Ancestry manage to get them all correct? It has been for me a bonus and there are still some more to work out which can be sometimes quite difficult. I will try and plod on.

    I am working on my husband’s tree and he only knows the maternal side but so many of his dna matches seem to be on his paternal side which since he was adopted he have no clue. We have figured out now by 4 matches that he shares a common ancestor but I do not know how to get the Thru lines since we are not sure where are how he is related except 2-3 cousins, or possible aunts/ uncles. We have messaged all close matches but it has been 2 weeks and no responses.

    I regret to say that I've seen quite a few ThruLine suggestions that are demonstrably wrong, and the great danger is that they seem to confirm and reinforce a lot of the questionable genealogy that abounds on Ancestry. As Crista stresses, it is important to test the validity of the hypotheses suggested by the ThruLine tool. If Ancestry offered chromosome segment matching tools, it would be easier to triangulate and test the validity and nature of many of the matches.

    Greetings Crista. I think I need to give some background for my question. My brickwall is my great grandfather, I can find nothing with his parents information on it. Through research, and discovering a handful of circumstantial evidence, I THINK I have figured out who his parents are. I placed them in my tree in case Ancestry was able to find something I couldn't. When I did my DNA and looked through ThruLines, something interesting popped up. The woman I am guessing is my GGGrandmother, well her father (so my assumed GGGGrandfather) is showing 24 DNA matches via 7 of his children, 4 of which are through my assumed GGGrandmother. Does this VERIFY that I am on the right track or did me putting them in my tree mess with something? Thank you. (I hope this wasn't too confusing)

    • @tonifarah3672
      @tonifarah3672 5 лет назад

      @@cecelliarogers7346 I keep a fact in the profile for each different name found. Ancestry will search the alternate names you add to the profile, even if they don't appear as part of the preferred name. For the preferred name, I personally put nicknames in quotes, and name changes as Elias/Louis. Mainly so that persons looking at my tree will see whichever name they already know. You can use parenthesis if you prefer. Ancestry will still search for both names.

      Hello! Thanks for the kind words. ThruLines will always follow your tree first. So, if you have Potential Ancestors that you know are not right, you have two choices at this point - 1) Put the correct parents into your tree for that particular ancestor or 2) Pay it no mind. I will submit a "reject" or "remove" suggestion to our product team over ThruLines. Thanks.

I have a regular Ancestry account for myself, but I don't have a full Ancestry account for each of my parents' accounts created by testing their DNA with Ancestry. Talking about step-parents: DNA Thru-lines (& family tree Y DNA) has narrowed my search to 5 possible candidates for the illegitimate father of a Great Grandfather. One of these characters happens to be the theoretical step-father of the same Great Grandad. The baby was adopted by the married sister. However, whom she married is a mystery despite the wedding certificate. I theorised that he (a commercial traveller) was a bigamist. There is a very close dead-ringer, another commercial traveller, whose wife disowned him. It turns out that the latter is related to us by thru-lines! I had already considered surrogacy as the married sister had no children after 8 years of marriage....eerie!

    I am so confused. There is controversy over two potential ancestors. Can't be both. I pretty much proved one of them. Then I connected my dad's DNA to the wrong line just to "prove" there would be no DNA connections. But there are thru lines all over the place. Arhg! I think I have faulty logic here somewhere. Someone please help un-confuse me.

    Great video on a great new feature. I am trying to find the parents of my maternal grandmother. I know her surname and have tons of DNA matches to that name. So for example, I have great confidence that I know who her possible 2nd great grandfather was with the same surname just because of the number and sizes of the matches. But I don't know who her parents are. I'm analyzing the matches shown in the Thrulines charts. I started with a suggestion that someone made as to who her parents were, but the cM counts of the matches are too low to support that placement in my tree. I got a suggestion from someone else about another couple who may have been her parents, so I temporarily changed her parents in my tree to the new couple (Edit Relationships). I went to look at ThruLines and the charts have not changed since I made that change in my tree, so I am assuming that the Ancestry computers have not recalculated the ThruLines charts yet. Does anyone know when I might expect to see new Thruline charts?... for example, who are my 3rd great grandparents, etc.

    • @henryospencer
      @henryospencer 5 лет назад +1

      The answer in my case... it took two days for the ThruLines to update showing the new ancestors. Reasonable, considering the Ancestry computers have to search millions of trees to accomplish the update.

    This looks great IF you have Ancestry information that goes back far enough. However, I am Native American, and those records do not go back far enough. I have DNA matches with other Native Americans that do NOT fall into my direct family tree due to those non-existent records. So my question is - How can ThruLines help out with finding out Ancestry information, ie where the DNA connection is? Will this help determine if it is from my Great great Grandmother's side, or my Great great Grandfather's side, etc (those being as high as records go)?

    Hi Crista
    Was thoroughly enjoying Common Ancestors and Thrulines, and now;
    My Thrulines and Common Ancestors have disappeared. When I oops deleted my Father from my tree 6 days ago, it deleted the whole Paternal side of my family. I figured out how to retrieve all the lost people on my Fathers side @ 4 generations back, and rebuilt my tree. I still don't have Common ancestors or Thrulines. I have called Ancestry twice with no resolve. Perhaps time will get my Common Ancestors and Thrulines running again.🙏
    Any ideas?
    Is "coming out of Beta" possibly relevant to my problems ?

    DNA Circles suggested several known unrelated folks; however, looking at photos of the potential folks, I can see the genetic similarity.
    One 19th century photo of a female DNA Circle potential ancestor looked like an 1800’s version of my father in DRAG.
    The family got a chuckle on that one.
    (All of the potential ancestors are just that: possible. Regardless, the potential match is a distant cousin at the very least.)

      Don't count on Ancestry or any of the other companies to preserve information forever. Any of the tools or databases you use can be taken away at any time. You have to save everything that is important to you. Take screen shots if necessary.

      If your circles data was correct, the same information should show up in thrulines. However, thrulines function depends on your free having the same data as any other trees it may find that have the person who is the subject of your search. It works by matching. Even the slightest differences may make thrulines unable to match your data.

    Thank you for showing how you do your color coding. I'm still trying to figure out how I want to do that. My problem is that on my dad's side, I can go back to the 10th generation before I start missing grandparents. (Believe it or not, the Thru Lines confirmed a lot of the grandparents in my tree.) I'm thinking if I start coding at my ggg-grandparents? That would start at the fifth generation back from me, so I would put the little colored hearts on the fourth generation. Do you have any other suggestions? I also use the notes section to say who they were descended from and which child.

    Question One - I use the "nee" (without the quotes) as the surname for those females who's maiden name I don't know, does this affect the DNA system match analysis? - should I be putting this in the suffix box. I use it so that at some point I can identify all those females that I need to research Surnames by finding the marriage (if there is one).
    Question 2 - should I make the biological parents the preferred ones - does this make your computer analysis system give me better results when searching for DNA matches in ThruLines?

One ancestor has changed for Aisley Andi Wadi to Elizabeth Cherokee Reed. I don't recognize Reed being married to Tah Chee but Andi Wadi was. I've sent ancestory a message to research it so hopefully they are. My 5th ggrandparents Crow have changed also and will let ancestry clean it up. Very well presented. I use ThruLines every day and it is the best tool Ancestry has added for genealogy since DNA testing. I wish everyone who has done a test would at the very least connect the test to a very simple tree with parents and grandparents because then all these otherwise useless DNA matches would become useful genealogy footprint tools.

    I find ThruLines interesting, but confusing! How are your DNA matches and your ThruLines different? I'm adopted - I've been able to reconnect with the maternal side of my birth family, but know NOTHING about my birth father. My birth parents weren't married, but could have been a one-night stand in May 1960 in Cleveland, OH. When I look at my ThruLines and DNA matches, nothing "adds up" so to speak. The research I have done has been fruitless because I have no surnames to base anything on. I cannot confirm relationships at all because of this missing info. When I try to contact my DNA cousins, many of whom haven't linked their trees or have private trees, I don't get a reply. How should I proceed?

    • @CristaCowan
      @CristaCowan 4 года назад

      Hi Bonnie, Great question. Since you have identified your birth mother, you should be able to create a custom group on your DNA Match list and put all of your maternal relatives in it. That will leave you with a list of your paternal relatives. How many centimorgans of DNA do you share with the top DNA match on the paternal side?

    • @ClarisseRockinThatBow
      @ClarisseRockinThatBow 4 года назад

      @@CristaCowan Crista - Yes, I did filter the paternal side. The highest DNA match I have is a first-second cousin - 470 cM across 20 segments. He has an unlinked tree - and hasn't answered my messages. In my ThruLines (paternal side) all of my supposed ancestors/matches are always ZERO - 0? I did have one ancestor that I had one DNA match with - but I really think I'm climbing someone else's family tree. I can't believe that NONE of my paternal cousins have submitted DNA tests - so I know there must be something wrong. Maternal side, I get 5 or 6 DNA matches on each ancestor. I did delete one paternal ancestor (2nd great grandfather) from my tree because I didn't think I'm in the right gene pool. He disappeared from ThruLines - and I probably shouldn't have "confirmed" his relatives, either - and I don't know how to switch it back to the dotted green "potential ancestor" status. As I told you, I'm not getting any responses from cousins I message. My email is correct. What should I do? Thanks for your help thus far! Bonnie

    Here’s what ancestry needs to do. Let people be able to add videos to their media, and voice recordings can be added right? Just let me know where. Also tagging people in photos should be sort of like how Instagram is. When I tap on a picture the names of the people should pop up under them so I can remember who is who when I look back or when I am showing other people or if someone is looking st my tree can see. Also my family had friends and my grandparents remember who the people in the 70 year old pictures are. I can only imagine the amount of pictures of family members people might have. With the tagging, people could get potential leaves leading them to pictures they have never seen before and maybe even stories or reconnecting of friends. Consider this because I believe this will make ancestry that much better

    I have two sisters who were my great-great grandmothers--long story I won't get into right now. I have been trying to find their parents but so far I have not been successful. The older was married prior to 1850 so no names in census records. The younger was married in 1854 and "should" be in the 1850 census with her parents, but no luck there either. Now enter ThruLines. Ancestry has been trying to give me a potential father for the older sister Catharine. So in clicking on the evaluate button, it takes me to all the tree hints, etc. However, there is a statement there saying that there are no trees that place Catharine as this man's (William's) daughter. And it is true. If you go through all the trees listed, none of them list Catharine as one of William's children. I've searched for years to find any possible parent who had both a Catharine and an Elizabeth (younger sister) of the right time period, age, location, etc. and I have found nothing. So my question is this: If Ancestry is using our trees, our DNA, our matches, and matches' trees, how do they come up with a potential parent if there are no records or trees listing this man as the potential parent? Nobody who has the same descendants of these two ladies in their trees has any parents listed. It's like they truly did come from another planet and were just dropped there. The same is true of my great great grandfather who was married to both sisters (at different times and after deaths of original spouses). I cannot find his parents either. I took the DNA test mostly to find these two sets of parents, but having no luck at all. LOL It just boggles my mind how Ancestry keeps making connections without any help from the other trees. The same kind of question applies to the DNA Match list page where it will list common ancestors between me and people who do not have any trees on Ancestry. In this case, I am NOT even using the ThruLines page. I am only referring to the DNA Matches list page. I'm not looking at my tree, or any other tree at that point. The match has no tree, yet Ancestry has common ancestors.

    Good input as far as what the computers are thinking, but I have a bone to pick with that. I refuse to remove nicknames, because they are HUGE at identifying people at times. I do get that they're unofficial, but at times that might be all you have to go on. I would've guessed by now after ALL these years Ancestry would've added a separate box for AKA's or nicknames, etc. I have a great grandmother with a death certificate that has her "go-by" name as her first name. Just have programmers add a separate box and eliminate from the computer algorithm...or create a better one (or someone who knows how to do it). As far as step/adopted, etc. I feel it's important to be able to link a biological and a adopted. I know of a girl who was adopted by her step father....I am not going to go in the semantics of ethics....but I refuse to remove that relationship. It's essential to display BOTH, you need better programmers to figure out how to write better programs to figure it out. Sounds mad, but I am not (truly)...just frustrated of the lack and apparent disregard for something as useful as a AKA. That AKA might not of started as biological, but has a chance to be official.
