I hope you look further into Jimi Hendrix! His music created a wave that flows into music today. Even rap artists say in interviews that they grew up on Jimi. His story is inspiring. He grew up in poverty and made it big. But, unfortunately died at 27 on “accident” because of his girlfriend. There are a few documentaries I highly suggest looking up. Some are on RUclips. Hope you enjoy the content if you do.
Jimi was way ahead of his time. He was 27 years old when he left this world in 1970. And there will never be another Hendrix. I'm 61years old and I've been listening to Hendrix since I was 12. His music is still alive and well today. So, young lady, he still has a lot of music to listen to and react to. RIP Jimi... We appreciate you!😎✌️

The first time I saw him was at the Westchester community center in 1967. We spellbound. Second time was at Woodstock Third time was at the singer bowl in San Diego with Janis Joplin. His concerts are still vivid in this country 71 year old brain.
It is such a treat to see a young person experiencing Jimi for the first time. I am 70 years old and I saw Jimi perform live 3 times. I met him at a club in 1968, 2 years before he died. He was the greatest rock guitarist of all time. By the way, this concert was near a beach on Maui in Hawaii, and the microphone is wrapped with foam because the wind was so strong that the mic was howling. This is from a movie called "Rainbow Bridge"".

Great comment! He always deflected accolades to other guitarists when people mentioned he was the best guitarist . He knew during his time no one was doing what he could do . He was just humble and a gentle soul.

I was lucky enough to actually grow up with this kind of music when it was brand new! It was a trip. It's a darn shame that more of Jimi's music--and better versions of it--isn't available on RUclips for people to get into now.
This was filmed on the side of a volcano is Maui. It was 60 mph winds,. They needed to rip foam out of the cases for the amps and quitars and wrap the mikes with them so the wind wouldnt take over.

The Man. Chuck Berry was the first guitar hero. Jimi destroyed rock and rebuilt it. A real game changer in guitar music. The microphones have foam on them to cut the wind noise. They are doing a big outdoor concert in Hawaii
Great post! JH is of my generation. So many great artists of that era and he is probably the best electric guitarist of all time. Eric Clapton was jealous of him. To make it even more amazing is that he played a right-handed guitar left handed and strung it as a right-handed guitar. In other words everything was upside down. Chord progressions, lead rifs, everything played backwards and upside down. Thanks for hosting this!
Can you imagine what being at a gig with this guy was like? I can, because been there, done that! And yes....he's using his teeth to play the guitar. When Jimi is in the groove, Jimi and the guitar are one. The music just flows from Jimi to you. It was incredible. I miss Jimi.

He was almost glued to his guitar 24/7.I heard he even cooked his food wearing his guitar. He "paid his dues" by playing at every opportunity that knocked.

It`s a blend that stomped on the stages all over the world between 1967-1970. Glad to see that you are discovering Hendrix. Look for his funky Band of Gypsys album, it is where the Digital Underground got their sample for the song, "The Way We Swing." Oh, and yes, he was playing the guitar with his teeth.
WOODSTOCK Jimi was largely unknown, but after he played there, he became a legend ! The "THING" on the mike was a filter to cut out noise from the wind.
Jimi was the highest paid act at woodstock and closed the festival for a reason.. he was very very veryyyyy well known by woodstock. He was largely unknown at Monterey
I started college in Buffalo in 1967 As I walked on campus I heard All Along the Watchtower by Jimi blasting from 1 dorm window & the Doors' Light My Fire from another. Bliss.

This was his last American concert before he died. It was at the foot of a volcano in Hawaii. The thing around the mic was foam. The winds from near the volcano were so strong it was making noise in the mics and picked up on the recording. They ripped the protective foam out of their cases and wrapped it around the mics to try to reduce the noise. It may interest you to know that after Hendrix died (9/18/1970), they mixed this recording. The drum tracks were unusable. So Mitch Mitchell, Hendrix' drummer, went into the studio to re-record the drum tracks - and he nailed it in one take! I used to know two women who were friends with Jimi Hendrix. One of them was at this concert. They both described him as a very humble and shy man, who was a perfect gentleman.
My daughter brought her boyfriend in and Jimi was on the radio. I heard her say too him dont talk right now, hes having a jimi moment.. bless her heart.
Hendrix performance at Berkeley university ,wow, that is another great moment,the performance of Voodoo Chile,it’s like whoa,it was at the time of the anti Vietnam war and civil rights movement,it was before my time,but when I watch it on film,it’s like ,I hear that tune and I get visions,Jimi was part Native American,and he seems like some sort of shaman or something,very powerful performance..

The foam wrapped around the mic acts as a windscreen to reduce extraneous wind roaring drowning out the actual vocals. So nice to see anything out the usual, highly limited array of choices open to fans due to the estate's desire to protect his immense legacy from undue exploitation, for better or worse as far as the perpetuation and growth of said legacy fares. Try his 'Fire', for example. 'Red House', 'Machine Gun', should be over 10 minutes, ideally Band of Gypsies
Many people seeing Hendrix for the first time are so caught up in watching/hearing him that they fail to notice there are only three people in the group . . . putting out a ton of sound.
First time watching you and you were so positive on Jan 5th this year. And then the 6th happened... Oh Dear God. But Music is one of those things that you get to experience that is fantastic regardless of the year or the turmoil in the world. I loved your reaction and yes listen to the original studio recording to hear the lyrics. The thing on the mic looked like someone tied a child's blanket around it, but that was to reduce noise across the mic from the wind. PS keep my seat warm, I'll be back to see more of your reactions.

Check out Jimi's Hendrix when he was with The Band of Gypsies. It was an all-black band in which Jimi was performing with two of his friends. I like the song "Power to Love."
He started playing when he was 15. He did not practice like some of the other famous guitarists. He ran on natural ability, and had the most incredible sense of the music, the feel he had was incredible. He was laying down the foundations of a genre that was just being formed.
I am not really sure what you are trying to say here, Hendrix practiced all the time, constantly, day and night, his 'natural ability' was being so entranced with and committed to the guitar, his girlfriends tell stories of him falling asleep with his guitar on his chest rather than them, he was not some magical music god who somehow knew shit, he watched everyone, learned from anyone he could, he would sit on the side of the stage with a tape recorder to learn licks from other musicians. His genius was taking all that and doing what he did, but the idea that he did not practice 'like some other famous guitarists', whatever that means, is absurd.
@@mpotter9944 you got to look at the time period. Hendrix had a one-string ukulele for a few years but his real playing started when he was 15. Say around 1957. Rock guitar was in its infancy in terms of effects. The first fuzz pedal came out about 62. The crybaby pedal didn't come out to about 66 late 66. Hendrix when he was younger went to the military for about a year. Other than the blues artists, he didn't have a plethora of selections available. Either hear it on the radio or go get the record. He never practiced to learn sheet music. He never practiced scales in terms of aeolian, phrygian scales. I'm pretty sure if you ask Hendrix when he was alive what's a pentatonic or aeolian, he probably wouldn't know as much. when I was younger and I started learning to play guitar when I was a teenager, I started to learn all the scales. I practiced day and night, scales, songs etc. Hendrix because of his raw ability could bypass all of that. He just played by pure instinct and would naturally find the notes by ear. He also did a lot of freeform time. So you could say he played a lot. Buddy Rich the great drummer for example, started playing when he was a toddler maybe one years of age, 18 months,I'd say, Buddy Rich admitted he never practiced. Not in the traditional sense. He played with the band. He had natural ability. He could hear a piece in one sitting and know the song. Hendrix in a way was similar. He learned Sgt Peppers after it came out on a Thursday, then played it on that Sunday live in front of McCartney at a performance gig. So again you could say that Jimi Hendrix played but I see that as different than practiced. Like he used his thumb when doing the Bar chords. He did what came naturally and easy to him and just went with it. He didn't spend hours memorizing aeolian or pentatonic scales, up and down strokes versus another type of picking. Diminished chord versus another type of chord. As mentioned he can bypass that, and given the technology and the rapid change with sound he adapted very rapidly to it and took the lead in front of Beck, Clapton and Page
@@nthdegree1269 I went down a Hendrix rabbit hole many years ago when I started playing guitar, have read a few biographies, all I am saying is the whole mystique and myth around Hendrix and his guitar ability is way overblown, he practiced and played constantly, he taught himself by learning from others, musicians would get angry at him while they are playing their set and Hendrix is on the side of the stage with a tape recorder copping their licks. You want to say he had some magical edge over other musicians, thats fine, but the truth of the matter is Hendrix did what he did through putting in the thousands of hours just like anyone else - practicing, playing, jamming with anyone and everyone he could, blood sweat and tears. he had a vision for his sound and he worked relentlessly toward that goal. If anything to say he had a 'natural gift' diminishes his own role in what he achieved.
@@mpotter9944 When I say practice, I mean like Micheal Angelo Batio and the shredders like that. You can hear a clear distinction in those styles between the looser or feel oriented style. Joe Satriani, is still blown away by a few of Jimi's performances, particularly when Hendrix was with the band of Gypsys. That type of feel for the music is innate, I don't think you can actually teach that to that degree. It can be developed but it was inside of Jimi and he manifested it through playing rather than practice When I played guitar starting out, I would take a scale and practice it as slow as possible and do that for eight hours, and work on speed that way. Hendrix was not doing that. You can hear it in the way he's playing. the closest thing to him in terms of Blues playing would be someone like Stevie Ray Vaughan. So rather than hard practice I don't see players like BB King Stevie Ray Vaughan Jimi Hendrix improving through strict practice regime. The type of practice they would be more involved in would be playing, learning through hearing records. It wouldn't be some regimented drill. that would be very apparent in a band like dream theater playing something like Since I've been Loving You, by Zep. You can hear in their version the feel is just not there. Sure they're much more technically proficient players because they've been through both long hours of drills and playing, but sometimes you start losing the feel.
I love your enthusiasm for Jimi and his music! I was only 7 when he passed away, but started playing guitar 6 years later. An older brother of a friend of mine told me when I was at their house one day; "Man, you've GOT to listen to Jimi Hendrix! He came out with a copy of "Are You Experienced", put it on the record player, and that was IT! I have been a Jimi fan ever since, I eagerly try to find new information about him, his music, his equipment, anything I can get my hands on! To that end, if you want a good, well written book to read about Jimi, I urge you to read "Jimi Hendrix, Electric Gypsy". One note on a comment you made as to the microphones at the Maui concert being wrapped in foam, it was to cut down on the wind noise. The wind was why the film "Live In Maui" has a lot of dropouts with the caption; "All Cameras Stopped", because the wind kept knocking over a lot of them out in the audience area. The thing on the mike was to keep the wind from popping in the mike. Jimi was outside on a windy day so to keep unwanted sounds of wind that foam was put there.
The crowd was a hippie commune that he was performing for, the free love flower crowd. I saw him 4 times . The last was Atlanta Pop fest. Check out purple haze live from Atlanta Pop. I was there that 4th of july night 1970.
There was nothing like Jimi Hendrix before Jimi Hendrix. Ever since it has been after Jimi! That "thing around the mic" was simple foam rubber used as a wind block.
That foam tied over the mike is what they had to use as a sound buffer and a spit shield back before we invented mic screens. It hept the natural flow of heavy breathing from bleeding through to the recording equipment.
You definitely want to react to the video of Jimi playing "Hey Joe". Jimmy completely changed the way people play the electric guitar. He is pretty much revered as a guitar God. We lost him way too soon.
Jimi Hendrix made electric guitar famous. He was a pioneer and after him, all of the white boys started trying to play like him. Also, Prince, Stevie Ray Von, Ernie Isley and even I myself all play like Jimi. Jimi had the nerve to be different. Another pioneer was Larry Graham who started the funk bass and we all started playing like him. Check out Graham Central Station. The fast stuff not the slow stuff.
Foxey Lady is one of my favourite Hendrix tunes, along with, Red House Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Along The Watchtower. His version of the American National Anthem, live at Woodstock is inspirational as well.

Love the video! You should check out his live album with the Band of Gypsies. It was the last major project Jimi did, an all black musician band formed by drummer Buddy Miles. They played a few shows at the Fillmore East in NYC in late 1969/1970 and recorded all of it. The music is mind blowing. They practically invented funk up there on that stage. Sadly they had issues with their manager and broke up, just a few months before Jimi ultimately passed away as well. Gone to soon no doubt. It’s a shame how his career was always getting messed up by greedy managers and producers. He basically had to live in England for half his career to even get noticed as a black man, despite being the undisputed GOAT. If he were alive today he’d be one of the most famous people in the world.

Don't know if you noticed but he was playing that guitar backwards and upside down. As a left handed player he couldn't afford a left handed guitar so he just flipped the guitar and learned that way.
Just found this. He has a lot of stuff to check out, "Axis: Bold As Love" is full of great stuff. One funny thing he had in common with Ringo Starr from the Beatles. They were both left-handed, so Ringo played drums made for a right-handed drummer, and Jimi took a guitar for a right-handed player, and turned it upside down to he could play it. Both great before they could afford it hahaha....
Jimmy Hendrix's hands were so big he could play the bass rif with his thumb while he played the lead and rhytm with his fingers on the bottom of the neck. His style revolutionized Rock n Roll. I forget where I heard it fromm but there's a story that B B King called Eric Clapton to a theater to see Jimmy Hendrix. The story goes on to state that B B told Clapton to come see the man who was going to put them all "out of business." If you don't know who B B King or Eric Clapton are then you should react to them next.
This is from a concert in Hawaii and there is a movie called Rainbow Bridge. Everyone was seated according to their Zodiac sign. Jimi learned a lot of tricks like playing with his teeth on the Chitlin' Circuit playing for Little Richard, the Isley Brothers etc.

FYI, the microphone had a bunch of foam wrapped around it because of all the the wind (the concert was performed right next to a volcano). The conditions were not at all ideal for a live performance. But it didn't have any effect on Jimi's performance.

This was his last American concert before he died. It was at the foot of a volcano in Hawaii.
The thing around the mic was foam. The winds from near the volcano were so strong it was making noise in the mics and picked up on the recording. They ripped the protective foam out of their cases and wrapped it around the mics to try to reduce the noise. It may interest you to know that after Hendrix died (9/18/1970), they mixed this recording. The drum tracks were unusable. So Mitch Mitchell, Hendrix' drummer, went into the studio to re-record the drum tracks - and he nailed it in one take!
I used to know two women who were friends with Jimi Hendrix. One of them was at this concert. They both described him as a very humble and shy man, who was a perfect gentleman.

Hendrix performance at Berkeley university ,wow, that is another great moment,the performance of Voodoo Chile,it’s like whoa,it was at the time of the anti Vietnam war and civil rights movement,it was before my time,but when I watch it on film,it’s like ,I hear that tune and I get visions,Jimi was part Native American,and he seems like some sort of shaman or something,very powerful performance..

Check out Jimi's Hendrix when he was with The Band of Gypsies. It was an all-black band in which Jimi was performing with two of his friends. I like the song "Power to Love."
He started playing when he was 15. He did not practice like some of the other famous guitarists. He ran on natural ability, and had the most incredible sense of the music, the feel he had was incredible. He was laying down the foundations of a genre that was just being formed.

I am not really sure what you are trying to say here, Hendrix practiced all the time, constantly, day and night, his 'natural ability' was being so entranced with and committed to the guitar, his girlfriends tell stories of him falling asleep with his guitar on his chest rather than them, he was not some magical music god who somehow knew shit, he watched everyone, learned from anyone he could, he would sit on the side of the stage with a tape recorder to learn licks from other musicians. His genius was taking all that and doing what he did, but the idea that he did not practice 'like some other famous guitarists', whatever that means, is absurd.
@@mpotter9944 you got to look at the time period. Hendrix had a one-string ukulele for a few years but his real playing started when he was 15. Say around 1957. Rock guitar was in its infancy in terms of effects. The first fuzz pedal came out about 62. The crybaby pedal didn't come out to about 66 late 66. Hendrix when he was younger went to the military for about a year. Other than the blues artists, he didn't have a plethora of selections available. Either hear it on the radio or go get the record.
He never practiced to learn sheet music. He never practiced scales in terms of aeolian, phrygian scales. I'm pretty sure if you ask Hendrix when he was alive what's a pentatonic or aeolian, he probably wouldn't know as much. when I was younger and I started learning to play guitar when I was a teenager, I started to learn all the scales. I practiced day and night, scales, songs etc. Hendrix because of his raw ability could bypass all of that.
He just played by pure instinct and would naturally find the notes by ear. He also did a lot of freeform time. So you could say he played a lot. Buddy Rich the great drummer for example, started playing when he was a toddler maybe one years of age, 18 months,I'd say, Buddy Rich admitted he never practiced. Not in the traditional sense. He played with the band. He had natural ability. He could hear a piece in one sitting and know the song. Hendrix in a way was similar. He learned Sgt Peppers after it came out on a Thursday, then played it on that Sunday live in front of McCartney at a performance gig.
So again you could say that Jimi Hendrix played but I see that as different than practiced. Like he used his thumb when doing the Bar chords. He did what came naturally and easy to him and just went with it.
He didn't spend hours memorizing aeolian or pentatonic scales, up and down strokes versus another type of picking. Diminished chord versus another type of chord.
As mentioned he can bypass that, and given the technology and the rapid change with sound he adapted very rapidly to it and took the lead in front of Beck, Clapton and Page
@@nthdegree1269 I went down a Hendrix rabbit hole many years ago when I started playing guitar, have read a few biographies, all I am saying is the whole mystique and myth around Hendrix and his guitar ability is way overblown, he practiced and played constantly, he taught himself by learning from others, musicians would get angry at him while they are playing their set and Hendrix is on the side of the stage with a tape recorder copping their licks. You want to say he had some magical edge over other musicians, thats fine, but the truth of the matter is Hendrix did what he did through putting in the thousands of hours just like anyone else - practicing, playing, jamming with anyone and everyone he could, blood sweat and tears. he had a vision for his sound and he worked relentlessly toward that goal. If anything to say he had a 'natural gift' diminishes his own role in what he achieved.
@@mpotter9944 When I say practice, I mean like Micheal Angelo Batio and the shredders like that. You can hear a clear distinction in those styles between the looser or feel oriented style. Joe Satriani, is still blown away by a few of Jimi's performances, particularly when Hendrix was with the band of Gypsys. That type of feel for the music is innate, I don't think you can actually teach that to that degree. It can be developed but it was inside of Jimi and he manifested it through playing rather than practice
When I played guitar starting out, I would take a scale and practice it as slow as possible and do that for eight hours, and work on speed that way. Hendrix was not doing that. You can hear it in the way he's playing. the closest thing to him in terms of Blues playing would be someone like Stevie Ray Vaughan. So rather than hard practice I don't see players like BB King Stevie Ray Vaughan Jimi Hendrix improving through strict practice regime. The type of practice they would be more involved in would be playing, learning through hearing records. It wouldn't be some regimented drill. that would be very apparent in a band like dream theater playing something like Since I've been Loving You, by Zep. You can hear in their version the feel is just not there. Sure they're much more technically proficient players because they've been through both long hours of drills and playing, but sometimes you start losing the feel.

I love your enthusiasm for Jimi and his music! I was only 7 when he passed away, but started playing guitar 6 years later. An older brother of a friend of mine told me when I was at their house one day; "Man, you've GOT to listen to Jimi Hendrix! He came out with a copy of "Are You Experienced", put it on the record player, and that was IT! I have been a Jimi fan ever since, I eagerly try to find new information about him, his music, his equipment, anything I can get my hands on! To that end, if you want a good, well written book to read about Jimi, I urge you to read "Jimi Hendrix, Electric Gypsy". One note on a comment you made as to the microphones at the Maui concert being wrapped in foam, it was to cut down on the wind noise. The wind was why the film "Live In Maui" has a lot of dropouts with the caption; "All Cameras Stopped", because the wind kept knocking over a lot of them out in the audience area. The thing on the mike was to keep the wind from popping in the mike. Jimi was outside on a windy day so to keep unwanted sounds of wind that foam was put there.

There was nothing like Jimi Hendrix before Jimi Hendrix. Ever since it has been after Jimi! That "thing around the mic" was simple foam rubber used as a wind block.
That foam tied over the mike is what they had to use as a sound buffer and a spit shield back before we invented mic screens. It hept the natural flow of heavy breathing from bleeding through to the recording equipment.
Also... It helped mask the sound waves of all those stage speakers!

Jimi Hendrix made electric guitar famous. He was a pioneer and after him, all of the white boys started trying to play like him. Also, Prince, Stevie Ray Von, Ernie Isley and even I myself all play like Jimi. Jimi had the nerve to be different. Another pioneer was Larry Graham who started the funk bass and we all started playing like him. Check out Graham Central Station. The fast stuff not the slow stuff.

Love the video! You should check out his live album with the Band of Gypsies. It was the last major project Jimi did, an all black musician band formed by drummer Buddy Miles. They played a few shows at the Fillmore East in NYC in late 1969/1970 and recorded all of it. The music is mind blowing. They practically invented funk up there on that stage. Sadly they had issues with their manager and broke up, just a few months before Jimi ultimately passed away as well. Gone to soon no doubt. It’s a shame how his career was always getting messed up by greedy managers and producers. He basically had to live in England for half his career to even get noticed as a black man, despite being the undisputed GOAT. If he were alive today he’d be one of the most famous people in the world.

Just found this. He has a lot of stuff to check out, "Axis: Bold As Love" is full of great stuff. One funny thing he had in common with Ringo Starr from the Beatles. They were both left-handed, so Ringo played drums made for a right-handed drummer, and Jimi took a guitar for a right-handed player, and turned it upside down to he could play it. Both great before they could afford it hahaha....
Jimmy Hendrix's hands were so big he could play the bass rif with his thumb while he played the lead and rhytm with his fingers on the bottom of the neck. His style revolutionized Rock n Roll. I forget where I heard it fromm but there's a story that B B King called Eric Clapton to a theater to see Jimmy Hendrix. The story goes on to state that B B told Clapton to come see the man who was going to put them all "out of business."

This is from a concert in Hawaii and there is a movie called Rainbow Bridge. Everyone was seated according to their Zodiac sign. Jimi learned a lot of tricks like playing with his teeth on the Chitlin' Circuit playing for Little Richard, the Isley Brothers etc.
