  • I filmed this skateboarding footage using a Super 8 movie camera in the mid 1970's around the Cronulla area. I'm hoping some locals might recognize themselves! Filmed by Ross Myers.

It reminds me of growing up in the 70's/80's ...Summer holidays riding all day on your bike with your mates. You wouldn't get home until sunset -- not a care in the world because you were safe, and mom and dad knew you were safe. ...Hot chips wrapped up in paper ...Playing test cricket at the park ...Day/Night matches in the back yard with the porch light on hahaha ...life was simple ..it was just perfect

Grew up in US not Australia and a bit older - I would have been at University already in mid 70s when I'm guessing this was filmed. Still this could have been my friends and I in the days when we all LIVED outdoors and thought life would always be sunny in every way.

I grew up on the Mornington Peninsula Vico, in the mid seventys they tar cealed the dirt roads all around our bush community. At that point we rod old push bike's & modified dragsters from the local dump, thrown away by the upper middle class rich kids.
The tared sealed roads were smooth, we made skate boards out of old hard wood planks, useing old school roller skates cut in half, bolted in place for the trucks & chalky wheels.
My first advanced board was a Mckoy fiber glass deck with graphite
run Cones & bearings, it was all about long sweeping turn & speed, big down hill bombs, that's just how it was, loved thoes days. All so motor cross Bush riding, BMX, Surfing 🏄‍♂️

Born in Sutherland hospital 1958. Lived in Kirrawee. Took the (Red Rattler) to Cronulla beach every weekend.... Family re-located to Perth WA in 1971. The beach scene here back in the day was exactly the same. Skateboards/Girls/Surfing......................... Please Lord take me back to that era......

1970 - Record everything on what would have been a heavy camera
2021 - Record no memories on a device with 4k capability in your pocket - no memories.
I am so jealous of the time that you got to grow up in and your videos make me yearn for a time that I wasn't alive in

A lot of stuff gets recorded nowadays, way more than what was filmed back then. Only difference is, most of the stuff that's captured now is crap no one will ever watch (fireworks, a concert/festival, etc). As a 20 year old I've noticed this so much

it strange how some songs cut through all the rubbish that exists now and bring you back down to earth and allow you to clearly see what is important in life. No mobile phones or high pressure commercialism just simple fun. The basic art of Skateboarding just seems to capture all that was, for some reason. Its the perfect union of vision and audio with the song "forever young "

born in 1968 in sutho hospital,i grew up in the miranda/gymea area when just about eveyone had a qtr acre block, few units and no mass townhouses.i know growth and population is inevitable, but what a shame to see the shire the way it is today.the local infrastructure will eventually succumb to the rapid growth of people and developement.the area has also a rapidly changing demograph with certain groups not giving a damn about the lifestyle we grew up with.

Most of Cronulla moved up to the Gold Coast and Tweed-Byron area with their divided inheritances because it's cheaper and turned it into clique Tinny Swamp. Kids are meth heads, bikies, covered in tramp-stamps, hoons, drunks and druggie shit. So cool.

Actually, these days they look exactly like the old baking lizards of and in their 70s, in speedos that propped themselves on the South Cronulla beach pavilion steps all day while their bellies spread and skin turned into leathery sandpaper.
