The type of mold that grows on breads is called Rhizopus stolonifer. Once the exterior structure (the sporangium) of the mold can be seen there's a very high likelihood that it's root like structure (the mycelium) has already invaded the entire contents of the bag. I've had a biology professor advise my class to just get rid of a loaf of bread if any piece of it has mold.
I work at Trader Joe's! And I will say that because we don't use any preservatives in our breads, they do tend to mold pretty quickly but storing them in the refrigerator definitely helps slow the process!
yes it's because any bread that comes in a plastic bag from a random store is filled with chemicals and preservatives, bread you get from a bakery only lasts about a week just like trader joes bread.
I have a good recipe for Brussel sprouts. wash the Brussel sprouts,, cut them in half, and put them on a cookie sheet.. dice up pancetta , put sea salt, and black pepper, mix together, put in the over at 375,, until the sprouts are tender , take out the try and drizzle balsamic syrup over them.. toss them. even use the loose leave from the Brussel sprouts they get crispy.. yummy.. I got the recipe from food network. I love your video's.
I CANT BELIEVE CAITLIN'S CORNER IS YOUR COUSIN! I have been subscribed to her all year and she's my FAVORITE RUclipsr, but I only stumbled upon your channel last week and straight up BINGED your videos and now you're one of my favorites... and you're RELATED. Small world!!
I like the mediterranean hummus! It's so good with the pita crackers. I also like the whole grain crispbread crackers, grain free granola, and peanut butter pretzels!
Trader joes is so good about taking back anything. If it's moldy or just not tasty. They are the best in customer service. Also I believe products get moldy from there because they don't have any preservatives
Also, I'm obsessed with nutritional yeast too (we call it nooch for short). My best friend swears I make the best kale chips she has ever tasted in her life! I wash the kale and tear into bite sizes, and then massage in a bowl with olive oil, sea salt, nooch, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and a little of Frank's Red Hot sauce. I usually make the spice, nooch and oil paste in the bottom of a big bowl, and then throw in the kale and really get in there with my hands and massage it in. Then bake on pans lined with parchment at the lowest temp your oven will do until they are crispy like chips! They're easy to burn though, you have to watch them. Omg they are SOOOOOO good though! I made two big bundles of kale into chips for a girls night the first time I made them and they all got devoured!
If you haven't tried their chili lime seasoning, you have to! It's really good on veggies and in particularly edamame, and a little goes a long way. 😋 Also if there is an Aldi along your travel, stop and check it out as they are TJ's cheaper sister store.
Chili Lime seasoning from TJ's. also the dried baby pineapple, it's only pineapple, no added sugar but it tastes like candy... so good! Also like the egg white salad and the chive cheddar cheese.
Dolmas are served cold and you can find them at a lot of Mediterranean restaurants. A lot of middle easterners have different versions. My family is Egyptian and we stuff ours with ground beef, rice, and a tomato sauce then it's cooked in a lemon broth and served warm. 🤤
I love nutritional yeast on popcorn, it's my favorite way to eat popcorn! I notice that Trader Joe's tortillas do go bad fast. I think I may have suggested the olive tapenade, but the one that I was talking about is refrigerated with the hummus. You should try their kettle corn which is a nice salty sweet treat.
we weren't sure which one you were referring too! I had that one in the cart but then we realized we had to put back the cold stuff because we didnt have a cooler with us. So was it the chunky one?
Yes, it was the chunky and cold olive tapenade. I didn't realize they had more than one otherwise I would specified. Definitely pick that up next time. I love to have a rice cake, spread hummus on top and then the olive tapenade, it's so good!
For the tortillas, next time you go just ask them to grab you a bag out of the freezer in back. TJ's bread is thawed out & put out on the shelves. The moisture from them thawing might be why they mold fast, but just a guess, but if you ask for a frozen bag you don't have to worry about that. Their pretzel rolls are frozen in back too.
Just stumbled upon this video and I was dying laughing because I say “Beg” too and my husband and brother-In-law have made fun of me for years! I’m not Canadian, I’m from Seattle, WA but I’ve always said it that way. Your not alone!!
I totally forgot to mention in the last Trader's haul... Get the chipotle black bean dip! It is the best! Especially with all of those chips that you guys love :) So glad I found your channel! You're so fun!
I love the canned wild salmon, trail mix cookies, shredded Mexican cheese, bhavarian bread, peanut butter cups, ancient grain cereal, hard boiled eggs (I'm not good at boiling eggs), white vinegar (mix with toasted sesame oil and it makes a great Salad dressing), any of their trail mixes are good.
That brown rice & quinoa pasta is my favorite! Its basically the only pasta I eat, and it doesn't taste like a "healthy alternative" at all. Also, the cookie butter sandwich cookies are definitely the best cookie butter product ever, they're amazinggg! I'm excited to see how you like them in the taste test.
I'm also from canada and while I was in the US for some vacations I stopped at trader joe's. That everything bagel seasonning is AWESOME. On avocado toasts with some chilli flakes... yuuuum... I will have to go back to the US to buy more :D I also bought a peach salsa that was sooooooo gooooood... mmmm
You picked up a lot of my favorites. I would add Siracha tofu, Butternut squash zig zags in the refrigerated section. Orange chicken in the frozen section (not too bad on sodium either) and bruschetta topping in a jar.
1. Coffee Flour sub for about 25% of your regular flour in your recipe. I made chocolate chip cookies with 1/4 cup coffee flour and it gave the cookies a roasty, slightly bitter but subtle coffee flavor, delish. 2. Aca'i frozen packets to make your own aca'i bowls 3. Gochujung Almonds as tasty treat that is salty, sweet and spicy. they are addictive (NEW product) 4. Himalayan Pink Sea Salt in grinder
love your trader joe's hauls!!! Can't wait to see your taste test vlog. Hopefully, you will be doing the taste test with Matt. You two are adorable together!!!
P.S. My twin 5 year olds love those PB&J Bars! I need to start buying more than one box at a time. I recommend the Organic Acai packets in the freezer section if you can find them. They are under $5 where I live and come in 4 portioned packs perfect for adding to smoothies or making Acai bowls!
My brothers got those meat bars for christmas and they loved them! I got fruit because i'm a vegan. Oh and my favorite things to get are the dates and the frozen pineapple. Some times I go wild and get nuts. But I don't really eat nuts a lot after getting sick years ago. So I just eat them some times. You need to try there gluten free waffles with sweet and sour chicken over the top. It is a change out on the chicken and waffles but its so much better!
PB&J Chocolate candy bar, Chili lime seasoning(Love on all veggie But expecially on corn and cumbers Mexican street style then on watermelon) , and Chocolate peanut butter cupcakeskids
You have to try the Dark Chocolate Nutty Bits, they are absolutely heavenly. So good. Just a nice luxurious treat, that has good ingredients, isn't too unhealthy, and hits the spot. I also recommend their coconut oil in the glass jar, it is seriously the best coconut oil I've come by so far, and they even come in little pouches now, great for on the go, and traveling. I use it both in my cooking and for beauty purposes. Good stuff.
My favs are the vegan tikka masala, and TJ's bags of sun dried tomatoes Oh, and the sriracha tofu and eggplant hummus. Hell, I love just about every single item they carry. If they have the lemon pepper pasta, omg get it. Sooooo good!
I say bag like you do. Take the tortillas back. If I buy something...i want to use all of it. And the spores have probably already spread to the other non moldy ones.
I think dolmas are Greek. I also love the brown rice/quinoa pasta. I buy the cookie thins for my mom and mail them to her since she doesn't live near a TJs. Ghee has the milk solids removed (aka the film ;-) ). I love their nut selection, dried fruits, freeze dried fruits, sprouted grain bread, chicken sausage, frozen salmon croquettes, I could go on and on...
I think they are from a few different countries after reading through the comments. So exicted to try some out this summer at taste of the danforth in toronto. And I agree the nut and dried fruit section is amazing
To prevent your tortillas going bad, put them in the fridge. It even says to do that on some of the TJ's tortillas. Otherwise they go bad super fast like in this video
great video! I really like the olive tapenade in the refrigerator section better than the one in the jar. Also..the blue cheese dip with the fig and olive crisps are one of my favorite combos on the planet! looking forward to the taste test video!
Love trader joe's! I drive 15 minutes to one when there's a "regular" grocery store only 5 minutes from my house. You're dedicated to drive to New York, haha! Just posted my own quick TJ's haul. It's all vegetarian and under $50 - perfect for my med school budget or anyone else who's looking to spend a little less at the grocery store! I'd love for you or anyone else reading this to check it out! :)

Hi Nikole, I love these Trader Joe videos. I'm obsessed with the Everything Bagel seasoning. Thanks for pointing me to it....and from a different video, I now have a pineapple cutter! Didn't know there was such a thing. I'm so happy about it! Thanks..Happy Days to you.
Don't know if your aware, but Trader Joe's let's you taste any of the products your interested in as long as it doesn't have to be cooked and as long as it's not alcohol. Just let an associate know you'd like to try something!
I am in LOVE with the epic bars, the bison one is my favorite flavor and the sirracha one is my least favorite flavor, lol you got the best and worst in my opinion... I usually have one when I go hiking, or after a workout, walking home from the gym it's a perfect protein snack to hold me over until dinner. I'd be curious to know if you like the sirracha one!!!
Love this! I am also from Toronto and travel to the states every so often when my parents go and I literally just go so I can hoard Trader Joe stuff lol. I would definitely suggest the organic dark chocolate bars for $2.99. I stock up all the time since they are also vegan :) I'd also suggest the Wegman's organic ketchup though, you can get two large bottles for cheaper than Trader Joes. If you haven't checked out Wegmans, it's worth a short trip as well.
Dolma is a family of stuffed vegetable dishes common in Mediterranean cuisine and surrounding regions including the Balkans, the Caucasus, Russia, Central Asia and Middle East. They are yummy! I get them at the local Greek place.
Trader Joe's chile and lime seasoning is very good I use it with a lot of foods. I sprinkle it on my popcorn too. Add that to your list of items if you have not tried it. I was so excited when I got to go to trader joes in NYC. Wish there was a TJ in Canada.
Dolmas (or Dolmades) are Greek. Try them in the Danforth. OMG-so so good. I'm Egyptian and we make them too but just a tad different ingredients. Thanks for the video
Next time to visit Trader Joes just advise them that the tortilla were moldy. They will credit you the amount even without having the actual item or receipt even if you go months later 😀
Oooooo use that pesto quinoa on your brown rice and quinoa pasta as like the "sauce" you're putting on the pasta it's so good..... hard to explain but delicious
Love love trader joes ❤️ hubby and I have nexus and go down grocery shopping every 2 weeks in Bellingham. Love the red lentil pasta. Next time pick up the 21 salute seasoning. It's my absolute fav
I don't know the exact name, but they carry some kind of "crazy feta" dip or "crazy greek" dip. Pioneer Woman mentioned it a long time ago and it sounded luscious.
That's funny, me and my husband say "chipatle" like your mom, it started off as a joke to be funny and now we don't even notice it but we say it like this 😂.
i find all "fresh" food from TJs gets moldy way too quickly. i never purchase fruit, veggies or bread from there anymore, unfortunately. i don't even go over to that aisle. luckily they are good for bars, eggs, meat, frozen stuff (which i limit), frozen fruit, nuts, seeds, salsa, chips/other snacks, and canned products!
Sarah Holmgren .. That's good proof TJ has "fresh". Anything that spoils quickly is because it has NO PRESERVATIVES. Just place items that go rancid quick, In the frig or freezer until ready to use. Simple as that! : )
Dolmas are famous Turkish food! I hope the kind you got does not have raisins in them, those are usually the grossest in my opinion! lol. Hope you like em.
I love the rx bars! You Got Me to try them and Amazon is more expensive for them if yours are 1.99 at trader joes, Amazon sells them for 2 something a bar
Hey girl I'm in Buffalo. & it's been hard for me. To figure out how to shop there so I really appreciate these videos please do at least one more 😊😊😊👏🏾
I miss Trader Joe's so much! Definitely need to stop by when I'm back home. RX bars are great!! I have a video on my homemade version, but I swear even though they're exactly the same ingredients they don't turn out the same! Still good, nonetheless. 😻
That just happened to me with my Whole wheat Tortillas from TJ last week. I have to use them the same day I buy because they don't have all the processed crap in them like the other grocery stores. Bummer though!
The type of mold that grows on breads is called Rhizopus stolonifer. Cara Sheehan but she just bought it. It shouldn't be moldy at the store.
good to know! Yea next time Ill have to put them straight in the fridge or freezer..
Perhaps there's less preservatives but I find that Trader Joe's breads, tortillas, etc. tend to mold more quickly than normal
thats what Im thinking too
cherylchen17 maybe they don't have any preservatives, idk.
They have to be put in the fridge to prevent this

I like the mediterranean hummus! It's so good with the pita crackers. I also like the whole grain crispbread crackers, grain free granola, and peanut butter pretzels!
We love nutritional yeast and ground flax seed on our popcorn. My 3 year old calls it "Easter Yeast". Haha. No idea where that comes from.
Trader joes is so good about taking back anything. If it's moldy or just not tasty. They are the best in customer service. Also I believe products get moldy from there because they don't have any preservatives

haha thanks! Yes he'll be doing it with me again! Our vlog is goign up tomorrow of our trip to TraderJoes.
I think it's pretty cool that you travel to a different country to grocery shop.
...and smuggles the produce over the border. LOL Rebels! (I do it too, but the other way around. I live in the US, but shop in Canada).
Dolmas is a famous dish in Greece! You can serve them with some greek yogurt on the side ;)
Love seeing all the things you buy. You should try the onion salt, bacon jerky, ghost pepper chips, and the roasted coco nibs!
thanks for the suggestions!
"Sodium is kind of high.... but it's sea salt and not table salt"
oh boy.....
I love Trader Joe's! I wish I could quit my job and work there. I am lucky that I have one about 20 minutes from my house!!
P.S. My twin 5 year olds love those PB&J Bars! I need to start buying more than one box at a time. I recommend the Organic Acai packets in the freezer section if you can find them. They are under $5 where I live and come in 4 portioned packs perfect for adding to smoothies or making Acai bowls!
Im excited to test those bars out! And yes I agree I would totally work there too haha
Dolmas are Armenian ones, it is a mincemeat with rice wrapped in grapes leaves and then cooked with water and seasonings. Tasty, try it!
oh interesting! These didnt have any meat though just rice. I think I would prefer it with meat or more seasoning.
The taco mix is awesome! I buy the organic taco shells from TJ too. The balsamic glaze is good over grilled veggies!
My brothers got those meat bars for christmas and they loved them! I got fruit because i'm a vegan. Oh and my favorite things to get are the dates and the frozen pineapple. Grape leaves!! They are amazing, a greek staple when I go out to eat greek food
If you blend the nooch in a spice grinder it sticks to the popcorn really well.
I say bag like you do.
Take the tortillas back. If I buy something...i want to use all of it. And the spores have probably already spread to the other non moldy ones.

Don't know if your aware, but Trader Joe's let's you taste any of the products your interested in as long as it doesn't have to be cooked and as long as it's not alcohol. Just let an associate know you'd like to try something!

lol were not alone!
The Jackfruit Vegan me too!!! lol I don't know it sounds the same as bag when I say it but according to my friends I say beg.
English isnt my native tongue but i dont hear a difference between bag and beg 😟
My Brown rice tortillas were moldy too when I got home. You can take them back and exchange them but I know that's inconvenient.
I love Traders Joe! I was in Toronto last year and I'm surprised they don't have one. You had a great haul! 😊💕
I am in LOVE with the epic bars, the bison one is my favorite flavor and the sirracha one is my least favorite flavor, lol you got the best and worst in my opinion... Try the bruschetta sauce (jar). So yummy on a capresse sandwich or on avocado toast
Get salted cashew butter, dried jackfruit, apple cinnamon sticks, roasted plantain chips, ginger caramel ketttle corn, Thai spice almonds and Sacha inchi seeds,
amazing thank you!
Try avocado toast with the sourdough bread and a little everything seasoning! Best thing ever!
You need to make traders Joe's lentil
Dip, it's the most amazing thing in life
Is that with the lentils and the bruschetta ???
Dolmas (or Dolmades) are Greek. Try them in the Danforth. OMG-so so good. I'm Egyptian and we make them too but just a tad different ingredients. Thanks for the video
oh yes!! taste of the danforth is coming up soon no??
Next time to visit Trader Joes just advise them that the tortilla were moldy. They will credit you the amount even without having the actual item or receipt even if you go months later 😀
Great video, nice shopping tips. Thanks!

Oooooo use that pesto quinoa on your brown rice and quinoa pasta as like the "sauce" you're putting on the pasta
it's so good..... hard to explain but delicious
oh yumm!!
I always put my groceries away when I get home even the tortillas go in the fridge, otherwise it all molds and spoils.
i was so sad.. def threw out the bag
You really should throw away those corn tortillas :-)
Also, I know you are not close by but they have an amazing return policy. They take everything back, no questions asked.
I already threw them out but maybe Ill mention it to them next time and see what they say
Love love trader joes ❤️ hubby and I have nexus and go down grocery shopping every 2 weeks in Bellingham. Love the red lentil pasta. Next time pick up the 21 salute seasoning. It's my absolute fav

Obsessed with the bagel seasoning 😋. Every time I go to TJ's I buy like 5 when it's in stock! I can't be without it ever again. Ha!
I cant wait to try it! What do you usually use it on?
Ghee is very healthy and used videly in India. It's made from cream that is deposited on top of milk :)
So good I had to watch it twice!!!
the pita bites are addicting.. i can eat a whole box in one sitting
Love the eggplant spread from Trader Joe's as well as
Ive heard good things about it but have yet to try it out!
That's funny, me and my husband say "chipatle" like your mom, it started off as a joke to be funny and now we don't even notice it but we say it like this 😂.

You have to get the Salsa Verde next time! It's the best!! :)
Great haul! Makes me want to have a snack and go to Trader Joes ha!
I got English muffins or bagels and they were molded. I work nearby so they replaced them and gave me my money back! I check things better now!!!
Next time I'll def be more careful or throw them in the freezer straight away!
im from buffalo! also the flaxseed and soy tortilla chips from there are my favorite! theyre amazing with pineapple salsa
The GF crispy crunchy chocolate chip cookies are my FAVE! 🍪🍪🍪
those sound delish
i find all "fresh" food from TJs gets moldy way too quickly. i never purchase fruit, veggies or bread from there anymore, unfortunately. i don't even go over to that aisle. luckily they are good for bars, eggs, meat, frozen stuff (which i limit), frozen fruit, nuts, seeds, salsa, chips/other snacks, and canned products!
AND COFFEE!
You
Got
Me to try them and Amazon is more expensive for them if yours are 1.99 at trader joes, Amazon sells them for 2 something a bar
oh really.. I havent tried buying them online yet but good to know
Hey girl I'm in Buffalo. & it's been hard for me. To figure out how to shop there so I really appreciate these videos please do at least one more 😊😊😊👏🏾
Ps... I go to toronto often! What grocery stores should I try there?
Nice!!! I say "beg" too. Another Canadian.
Beag for bag is a northern thing. Not how i say it, but it's how my friends in Minnesota would say it.
I love your accent I love how you say beg I mean bag 😉😘😘😘
Great buys Trader Joe's is awesome
I love grocery hauls!!
Also the pesto/ quinoa spread is the bomb👍👍😋😋😋
agreed!
Thanks for the shout out to Buffalo! I also spend quite a bit of time in Canada at our family cottage.
wheres your cottage?
I miss Trader Joe's so much! Definitely need to stop by when I'm back home. RX bars are great!! I have a video on my homemade version, but I swear even though they're exactly the same ingredients they don't turn out the same! Still good, nonetheless. 😻
I thought about making them but they are so good I dont know if it would come out the same..
take a pic of your moldy tortillas. Next time you go to TJ. show them the pic with the date etc. they will give you a new pack free
I already threw them out but good to know for next time!
Wooot wooot- I'm from Buffalo 🙋🏼! ❤️You & your videos!
That just happened to me with my
Whole wheat Tortillas from TJ last week. I have to use them the same day I buy because they don't have all the processed crap in them like the other grocery stores. Bummer though!
