Kodak Vision3 - The Most Cinematic Film? [First impressions]

  • Join me on this film photography vlog as I'm trying out Kodak Vision3 500t with the Fujifilm tx-1 aka Japanese XPan. Shot this film for the first time at night, pushed it 2 stops. It's certainly the most cinematic film by definition, but is it my favorite? I am not quite sure yet. Definitely need to shoot this film more to form a proper opinion, but I hope you enjoyed this vlog.
Kodak Vision3 is originally motion picture video film, but it can also be shot with stills cameras with a few adaptations. There's popular brands like silbersalz who sell these, but you can also find them for cheaper off of places like amazon/lazada simply by searching for kodak vision3. There are 3 different speeds, 50d, 250d, and 500t. I chose 500 pushed 2 stops because of my whole thing for night photography and inability to use a tripod.
This is almost the same as cinestill, at least in theory, but with an added remjet layer which prevents those trademark cinestill halations. In practice though I do see some more subtle differences, especially in temperature, but there are many factors that may explain those differences so I can't speculate furhter.

I think they all turned out gorgeous- the cold overall coloring emphasizes the rainy weather and looks so lovely with those softened reds

I really like the video! I'm always so hyped up when I see you posting new video. shooting f4 at night is probably a though thing for sure, but this camera is so unique, it's cool.

Thanks very much! Yeah the f4 is tough, might try with a tripod next time as well although I hate dragging one with me

I don't think these shots are boring but you have to think/create a story! For example that one you took with the family sitting on the right of the photo. Once i took a shot of a woman walking alone and didn't notice she was wearing a coat saying: stop following me. This tells a good story of loneliness. I love the moody/dark/under-exposed vibes, keep creating!

Hah yeah speaking of shirts look closely at 1:34. But the photo still looks bad imo so the real story is that I'm a terrible photographer :)
Seriously speaking though, the shot with the family is one of the better ones from this day, had I waited there a bit longer perhaps something would have happened to make it a bit more compelling and I could have been a bit closer as well. The shots at the end though, not much going on. I'm happy with a few of these but not gonna pretend any of them were legendary.

@@teemu.mp4 we have to admit that it's pretty challenging what you're trying to do(film handheld night shots). I have the same mindset that that if you keep a low profile and constantly trying to improve that's going to make us at least descent!!!

These are so beautiful! I love your style~ I wonder if the colour difference between Cinestill and Vision 500t partly comes from the Cinestill being developed in C41 and the latter with ECN-2

I love the look of this film, I have one roll but havent had the opportunity to shot it. What frightens me is the possibility to get washed blacks, or shadows for that matter

I just shot another roll of this without pushing, like it a lot more this time (might be a video in a few weeks)

Your lens is just too slow and your shots under exposed. You need to get a f/1.4 prime lens. If you would have shot a f/1.8 or f/2 lens you wouldn’t have even needed to push the film at all, but a f/1.4 would give you extra margin to over expose your film at rated speed. Also consider a travel tripod. These you just sling over your shoulder. They aren’t very stable in wind but strike a great compromise.
Also at night, you really have to spot meter a mid tone or meter a highlight and do exposure compensation.
You cant blame the film. When really the issue is a slower lens and no tripod.

I think it's not ideal to shoot it handheld with an f4 lens. I would try to shoot the next roll with a tripod and have it longer exposed ... this said, it will sure eliminate to have moving subjects in the frames. But just to get to see the difference. I am not sure what reciprocity failure Kodak vision 3 has, but it seems to be quite minor. Anyway, I am curious myself if you get better results next time, since i am also thinking of getting some of this stock 😀

    • @teemu.mp4
      @teemu.mp4  3 года назад +1

Yeah I mean I thought about it, might be worth experimenting with but a tripod is far from ideal as well. Maybe the exposure is cleaner but you get blur, lose subtlety, mobility, its a pain to drag with you... Need to have a clear plan for shots to make it worthwhile.
