I can't believe I went 10 years without knowing about this. What a gem
He is watching everyone try to be something they are not. (Everyone is fake.) He runs away and finds himself to be down to earth. (He finds happiness and comfort in the simplicity of life in love with someone having a child.) He runs back to show everyone he can be just as good as they are. (This is the way the world is. Everyone wants to be someone and wants to appear as if they are special.) He sees what really matters at the end of the video. Not to mention the judges, which are really just everyone around us judging us on a daily basis.
It doesn't matter who we are or what we want to be. He realized true happiness was something greater than being selfish. At least that's what I'm getting...

@@davidvanbakergem1674 I would say he was torn because he became confident and found himself later in life. He looks at his kid and realizes he is getting older. He missed out and didn't live the life he wanted before he became a father so he sacrificed his family for the experience.
Went to high school with the drummer. Had agonizing crush on him for three years of my life.
I took an acting class in Austin a couple of years ago, improv to be exact. I'll never forget what the instructor told us on day one, never be afraid to take risks, be bold, take chances and never shy away from an opportunity. Two months ago I got a part in my colleges play, for my audition, I showed up and had nothing to planned. Needless to say I went on that stage and improvised. Now I have a leading role in that very play.

Amazing metaphor for the smoke and mirrors of the entertainment industry. He is hyping himself up for the proverbial talent show, seeing the inauthentic nature of the stunts the other competitor's are using to win. He rejects it and runs out into the wilderness, connects to his basic need for food and shelter. Finds a woman and falls in love. Even her simple facial features represent the simple lifestyle that he now lives. But watching her and his son dance together triggers something within him and his need to perform and share his art with the world. He runs back knowing that in order to "win" and be a "successful artist" he is going to have to play the game i.e use all of the stunts the other participants used to gain approval. And while it is fake, and he is fully aware of it, he is telling us that he is willing to play the game. Rejecting the potential meager and simple life offered to him by his hypothetical wife and child in the wild, he choses to perform and play for us. Amazing that this is the music video for a popular song that was in an Ikea commercial, a real life manifestation of him playing the game to gain notoriety and success. Beautiful and self aware piece of art
There is an assumption that he "falls in love" This is not there - there is no factual evidence. Remove that aspect and you'll go further with your understanding of what's happened. Not all relationships are based on love. Notice she is the only women he's seen; he hasn't seen anyone for quite a while, etc.

The meaning of the video was pretty straightforward to me. The fact that his dream family faded away in the end clearly highlighted a final point. That by copying the dancers before him to make the judges happy, he sacrificed his own personal happiness. The larger meaning is that it's perfectly fine to be original and not always listen to what society tells us to do. He says 'The more I listen, the deeper I sink'. Deep stuff.

I remember seeing this music video for the first time on MTV as a preteen I fell in love with the sound instantly but haven’t heard it in literally a decade and recently found it again i was searching and only knew the piano keys in the beginning 😭 this song is sucha masterpiece

basically, what this means is that he was doubting himself and his abilities because of other people telling him he couldn't be good enough and could never attain his dreams. they're wrong though, but he can't accept that and that's what stops him from making his dreams come true. so he runs off and he marries and has a child but it's that child that makes him remember his dreams again and he tries to go and get his dreams but it's too late; he can't have his dream without crushing another of his.

As awesome as the whole metaphor for acceptance and fear of failure as the whole desert scene is, my favorite part is still the "special effects" during the talent show portions. Brilliantly done!

This band has produced some amazing, impressive music. Awesome voice, great lyrics (imo), and they have some genius melodies. Most of the songs on their first album were amazing. Electric guest is a gift to mankind. Can't wait to hear more of their stuff

I remember the first time I saw this was on TV. I wasn't really paying much attention and I thought it was the end of the song when he ran off. I was confused as fuck and started to wonder if it was an advert for something, then he ran back and started performing. I lost my shit. Since that faithful day I look it up from time to time to have a bit of a giggle

Look at how nervous he is before going on stage at the beginning of the video. I think the video was about him conquering his stage fright, but when he ran away he stayed so long he started a family. Then remembered why he ran and went back and killed it on stage. He doesn't look so happy with his choices at the end, which goes with the lyrics. IMHO

Electric Guest makes consistently stellar music videos.
One could interpret the boy as any common man or woman facing the fear of acceptance in society. The fear causes this person to flee from the trial he or she should be undergoing and the woman and son symbolize the possibility of choosing to run. By going back to the audition, the boy gives up, in essence, any future of a scenario where he and the girl end up together in order to overcome his fear of acceptance.
he also may be giving up on a way of life that would have been more in accordance with himself, and less with society's expectations.. at least that's what his expression at the end makes me think
Or he just has an awesome jacket, and that's all we need to know because overthinking everything is the reason we're scarred and thinking of how not be scared, then trying to blah and blah blah

Well, in terms of reality, the music video talks about a boy accepting himself, and the others around him. The audition was a metaphor for his fear, the judges was his acceptance, and the woman and baby girl are his hope, as seen judged at the end. It may be confusing at first, but you'll get it.
Yes, I've noticed that too, and I've been thinking and I just realized that maybe the video is trying to say that things are not always as we think it is or how we see (because there is always a trick behind the dance move... so it can be a metaphor)
