      Tansy (ratty) used to steal the ice cubes out of my water! But they would always melt after she stashed them :-(
      Sherman (ferret) simply dumps the glass over and digs out the ice.
      Doolittle (ferret) always stashes his toys. He doesn't play with them, he just puts them away in their stashes where they belong. He's clearly a very organized ferret. I just wish he would organize his potty habits >:-(
      My first group of rats were very religious about stashing all their food from their bowl in one of their boxes. Rather, Guttersnipe stashed the food, Snowberry took all the paper towels and stuffed them into the nest box, and Mist once thought she was very clever when she covered the food bowl (with food still inside!) with a paper towel and tucked it in, up until Snowberry took the towel and Guttersnipe took the food to their "correct locations"!

    They both have distinctive odors too.
    Rats actually smell pretty pleasant, which is remarkable considering how much they "marinate" in their nest. At least, assuming they haven't over-marinated themselves.
    Ferrets don't smell quite as nice as rats, but it's not entirely unpleasant either. Ferrets smell sort like... um... well... ferrets have a characteristic odor. It's vaguely like corn chips, but musky in a way, maybe kinda waxy. They also have a slight skunky undertone, but really only their faces, which have most of their scent. Honestly, they have an odor that I'd never smelled before. Very different. You might also compare it to some of those artificial room fresheners.
    Ferret odor, unlike rats, hangs around wherever they've been. You can tell they've been in a room even hours later. It's not that their odor is especially strong - it's not really any stronger than rats - it's just that it hangs around. I'm told that after the vet does a check up on a ferret, all the dogs that come into that examination room for the rest of the day go nuts trying to figure out what that strange and new smell is! So exciting!

He's a bit lazy though haha. I was wondering, is there anything, that you can suggest, that is fun for male rats in their cage? He's very picky lol. Thanks

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  6 лет назад +1

      You could try a more active layout that sorta forces him to move about. The way I do this is I don't tend to really use full sized shelves in my cage, instead sticking to baskets, hammocks, bins, ropes, and so on. Now I will caution that this can go very wrong if you don't make sure that each fall risk area has a hammocks or landing under it because rats have been know to fall and injure (sometimes fatally) themselves. But as long as you take precautions you should be fine.
      Otherwise you can try foraging toys (bird foraging toys are great!) as these involve food and will motivate any rat. You can also try giving him an appropriately (12+ inch and solid surface) sized wheel.
      No matter what you do I'd try any new toys for at least a few weeks before deciding he isn't interested - in the case of wheels and some foraging toys I've had some rats take a few weeks to figure them out but once they get it down they really seem to enjoy them.

    • @the_outcast_sanctuary
      @the_outcast_sanctuary 6 лет назад

      @@ShadowTheRat I'll have to make another attempt with his wheel again. It took him a month just to start sleeping in his space pod lol. I'll definitely look into the foraging toys though. I see them in your videos a lot. Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.

    Thanks for that, Esther! ❤️ I just lost my first rat on Saturday. 😞 Thankfully it was just due to old age and natural causes. I held him all day until he passed. My remaining boy, Eddie, is hanging in there. But I’m actively looking to acquire two more boys for us.
    Quick question: do rats cry or vocally express their grief? Have you ever observed that in surviving rats after a loss? I know Eddie’s grieving, but he sometimes also makes these weird little whimpering/squeaking noises until I pet and comfort him. I don’t remember him doing this before unless his brother was grooming or agitating him. I’m spending as much time as possible with him right now & spoiling him even more rotten than usual. 🥦🍓🧀 🍕🍝🍪🍩

      Two rats starved themselves to death with me, one because his pal went to rattieheaven and they were best friends.. and the other because I was really close with him and I was busy 3 days and just came to feed.. they were with 6 so I didn't thought he'd felt that lonely without me :/ my other rat of the 5 that are still here was really close with me too and almost starved himself too together with the other, but when I saw how bad it was I immediately stayed home 24/7, I thought he wouldn't make it like the other, it was so so bad.. miraculously he did , I was with him all day long, and up till this day he jumps around happily😊 so they do show grief , some in a more painful way than others...

      Joyce my heart goes out to you --that sounds really heartbreaking! Thank you for sharing it with me. The good news is that Eddie, my remaining rat, is doing really, really well. He never lost his appetite thankfully. I got two new babies about 3 weeks ago, and they've all become best friends! The babies are constantly on the move, and so Eddie runs around like he's about half his age, which is beautiful to see. He also acts like a mommy to these babies, which is adorable. They snuggle with him, follow him everywhere, and he is always grooming them and they him. It's really sweet. He does seem to miss getting as much individual attention, so I try to make time for solo snuggles with him, but now he's so wiggly again that he rarely wants to sit still for them. It's really heartening. And because he's so attached to me, the babies have seemed to want the same attachment with me. I really love ratties!

    I bet your rats have never slept through a treat time!
    My ferrets, on the other hand, get a jar of turkey baby food as part of their dinner, which they adore (but only the turkey flavor. They tell me "chicky is icky!"). However, someone is inevitably fast asleep and has to be located and physically dragged up out of bed so they don't miss out. They're pretty deep sleepers, with the possible exception of Doolittle, though none of ours have ever gone into the coma-like "dead sleep" than some ferrets are known to.
    Judging from what I know about it, the dead sleep is a limited form of torpor, perhaps similar to how squirrels semi-hibernate during the winter. Ferrets are in fact descended from a pretty northerly species, the European Polecat, and do undergo pretty noticeable seasonal changes. In fall and winter, they put on a huge amount of weight (Sherman *doubles* in weight over the winter, going from under 2lb in the summer to close to 4lb in the winter), which they then loose again in the spring and early summer. They also put on a long, thick winter coat. Sherman has fairly light sleek fur in the summer, but is an absolute fluffball in the winter. In addition to putting on all the weight.
    The other two don't seem to change as dramatically as Sherman, and it's amazing how Sherman completely dwarfs them in the winter, but is only a little bigger in the summer.

      Hi, I chose this cage for my 2 girls since in my country I wasn't able to find a better sized one with small bar spacing and the rat cage calculator said it could fit up to 3 rats. My ratties are still very small, they are about 2 months old and the cage looks huge compared to them. I'm not sure a 3rd rat would fit comfortably there though, so even though the calculator says it's OK - that's just the minimum and I highly recommend to anyone reading this - don't force a third one in a cage this size. The bars are horizontal on the long sides so they climb just fine /they like to walk on the top part upside-down too/ and when you hang down bridges, ropes, hammocks and ladders like I did it's not too low. Of course bigger is always better and since you said it's temporary - it should be fine to use it for the first 5 months since rats get to their full size in about 9 months of age, more or less. Just make sure to hang a lot of stuff from the top to make use of the space.

    Great video! I love both rats and ferrets😊
    Have had ferrets as pets in the past, but sadly there's this issue with antibiotic resistant bacteria coming from the raw meat industry going around (at least in the Netherlands, not sure if anywhere else), which makes a lot of them chronically sick and often end in them dying in their first year of life.
    I wanted to let you know (anyone who's reading) that ferrets are actually solitary animals. So however they can be good with other ferrets and play with each other etc., it can actually cause a lot of stress to the animal (they will often not show it, but can lead to gastrointestinal tract issues as they are very sensitive in that area) to keep them together permanently. Not saying tho that there can't be exceptions.
    Anyway, now I have chosen to keep rats as pets and i love it! Currently have a little group of 4 females: Ebby, Gajah (both around 3 months), Bonnie and Nora (both around 8 weeks). Ebby and Gajah also know how to spin and go through a hoop. Learned it here on your channel!
    Keep up the great videos!

      woah, i’ve always heard that you should always keep ferrets in pairs or groups, but in my opinion it depends on the ferret, all of their personalities are vastly different and some may appreciate company and some may not

      It is an insight about ferrets that only has developed over the last few years, so it is relatively 'new' information. I notice that in the Netherlands there's also still a division in two groups who do or do not stand behind this insight. For me it makes sense, as the ferret belongs to the Mustelids or Mustela which are solitary except during the mating season. The wild ancestor of the ferret is actually the polecat (Mustela putorius) which thus is solitary. In addition, research was conducted to examine the origin of the GIT problems of ferrets and it has been found that ferrets which were kept alone did not have as much GIT problems due to (territorial) stress as ferrets which lived in pairs or even groups. In my opinion, if people really want to, it is possible to keep more than one ferret, but they should at least each have their own cage to sleep and have down-time in etc. to try and limit the amount of territorial stress.
