    I worked (as project manager) for one of Fincantier's subcontractor. We built the machine that was used to put together the hull, we built the welding system and we built all the hatch... AMANOX (the anti magnetic steel used) is a bitch to weld, worse than stainless steel and titanium. this is the best job I have ever done... and I still have some of the original drawings.

    The largest vulnerability of the World War II diesel-electric submarines was the fact they had to surface to run their diesel engines to charge the batteries. The Snorkel, developed by Germany, partially solved this problem, but it looked better on a design board than it did in practice. AIP submarines truly have changed underwater warfare. Now, with the ability to remain submerged and quiet for up to two weeks, this makes finding an AIP equipped submarine next to impossible. I understand when the U.S. Navy partnered with Sweden to conduct tests with their Gotland-class AIP submarine, it was virtually impossible to find. Even nuclear-powered submarines are limited in endurance by their food supply for the crew. So, if cost makes it impractical (or even impossible) for a country to buy and operate nuclear powered subs, the AIP suddenly becomes a lot more attractive and retains a powerful attack capability.

      The issue isn't just costs. As shown in the video, the type 212 can remain submerged in water as shallow as 17 meters. That's critical because the Baltic Sea is a puddle, and if you needed deeper waters, you'd have to surface for transit and all the subs would huddle in the very same spots. When the Russians wanted one of their big subs in a parade in St. Petersburg, they had to show it to the world in the Denmark Straits first, directly off the nose of a NATO partner, because it was impossible to get that thing to St. Petersburg submerged.
      If shallow water capability is critical, nuclear subs will likely be too large.

      @@ohauss worse, nuclear subs need to have a certain amount of water below the keel, for the secondary coolant cycle pumps to intake and expulse water. that is another reason why nuclear subs cant operate in shallow water.

      Actually, the snorkel [DE: Schnorchel] was developed by the Dutchman, Jan Jacob Wichers, who called it the “snuiver” [EN: sniffer]. AIP, particularly the hydrogen fuel cell Permasyn system developed for Germany’s AIP submarines by Siemens, however, is a German innovation (and a bloody brilliant one at that). These Type 212A submarines are perfect for locking down the Baltic and Mediterranean seas…

      군대는 요리사를 그리 많이 두지 않습니다, 육군 경험상 127여명에 요리사가 2~3명이었는데 1~2명을 취사지원이라면서 잠깐씩 보조하게 했죠.
      해군도 요리사는 1명이지만 시간이 되는대로 도와주는 전우들이 있을 것입니다, 전투에서는 레토르트 식품을 섭취하니 굳이 많이 두질 않죠.

      Keep in mind: German subs need to be able to operate in very shallow areas of the baltic sea. A large sub would not work here.

    The Swedish AIP is based on the Sterling engine. It's not in the same class as the German AIP. Sterling AIP was fitted to Japanese submarines but proved difficult to maintain. The German system will evolve and eventually extend it air independence capability.

    Good video. But I want to add some other point. Armed unmanned surface vessels, such as the Turkish ULAQ and MİR, can carry variable depth sonar, ASW torpedoes and ASW rockets. They are a couple of tons. Normally, no submarines launch a 533mm torpedo for them. It will be overkill and overly expensive. But, in the future, they will have to. The new systems, such as the IDAS and Murane, can also solve this problem.

      this subs are working with different USV, their sub fleet is top notch tech! that's why the US needed a frigate that can defend their fleet against such subs, so they bought Italian frigate for their future frigates!

    On Nato manouvers a German 212A was designated as an enemy sub for ASW carrier group practice. The 212A had an American carrier locked in it's periscope. The whole carrier group had no idea it was there :)

      That's because the US isn't using it's war tactics during those exercises. In training you want your training partner to go through all the moves even though you can stop them .

    Canada should partner up with Germany and Italy to make some version of this (like the CD or better) our next generation of sub. We have a fuel cell industry here too, so a business partnership could work.

      I hope they do. The new japanese boat could be interesting too for Canada, but the Japanese have very little experience in international defense indsutry partnerships and exports. The partnership with Germany and Norway could build on better foundations.

    Some ideas are old. 1. The Hydro- drive system was explored in the 40ies in Germany, called Walther Drive System. It never made to military service. The Boat was named V 80. Capable to drive very fast under water with out any airsupply. The handling of Hydroperloxyid was not easy so it never make to a real navy boat. 2. The radar reducing or consumtion surface techology was also proofed since 1944. The Alberich surface, named after a mystic german dwraf, made of rubber and some other ingredients and a mamorized surface should reduce the sonar and radar capabilities of allied vehicles detection systems. Both, the raw materials were very rare and the lack of good and permand glue, the project was only once tested on two boats. Many patterns of the the systems were lost while on patrol due to the permant kinestetic power of the water. 3. But it has been used to proteced some of the late snokel heads of the U Boats to decrease the detection from destroyers. 4. Even an remote automatic AA gun were installed on the XXI boats in the turrets, two dooble 2 cm AA guns, controlled from the inside the boat, but only on surface. The XXI Boats should also have a Hydroperloxid drive, on the first intention, never realized due to the handling and logistic problems. 5. In 1943 a light helicopter with self driveb rotation blades and one pilote was intrduced on some of the IX- boats, which had operated in the South Atlantic and Indian sea, to increase visualitity range. Of cause it was not a drone but the idea was the same. So not all Ideas are very new. Today we face a much large wider technology and materials.

    Thing must be pretty spacious for the crew by submariner standards considering the Seawolf has a crew of 140 while the 212 has only 27. Yes, the Seawolf is triple its length, but it has nearly 7x the crew size.

      DW did a documentary called 'Submarine Soldiers' (on RUclips) that follows a crew through workup and initial cruise. These boats are pretty cramped--hotbunking is normal.

      A more fair comparison would be to compare by volume rather than length (the Seawolf is both longer, wider and higher). If we compare the surface displacement (not a perfect measure estimation of volume but the closest I could think of right now) to crew size we have Seawolf 8600 tonnes by 140 crew 8600/140=61.
      For the Type 212A we have 1524/27=56. So a little more displacement per man in the Seawolf then.

      A senior RAN submariner went on board a Dolphin Class submarine and when he descended into the hull he exclaimed this is like the Tardis. Compared to the cramped Collins Class the German boat was extremely spacious despite being a smaller boat.

    you sound turkish af. 212a is one of the best subs out there. these are the F-35s of the seas. hope they can minimize the upcoming CD variant to some similar dimensions as 212a. smaller subs means less detectability.

    The Germans came up with every trick on this one. That plastic coating almost reminds me of a kind of aquatic zimmerit. Serves similar purpose. Anti-Magnetic shielding.

    6:12 Lithium-ion batteries are a bad idea in a submarine: once they catch on fire, they can't be put out, aside from the toxic fumes they produce. Lead-acid batteries, not so much.

      Lithium iron phosphate (LFePO4) batteries are the ones that will replace the 212. They have been testing them for three years now and have successfully passed certification.

    I wonder if it would be possible to replenish Hydrogen and Oxygen stocks by splitting the saltwater using electricity generated by the diesel?

      You could, but it probably doesn’t make sense. The boat has good endurance in AIP mode. You would use the diesel to cruise when stealth is not required. The overall endurance of the crew is limited. Any conversion of diesel to H & O is going to be inefficient. I looked into this in relation to a sailing yacht with a water-maker. Did it make more sense to have a large water tank or rely heavily on aux diesel generator for electricity to power the water-maker? My conclusion was to carry enough water for multiple days of cruising and treat the water-maker as auxiliary.

      @@oanskeptic5822 yes, the electrolysis process is highly inefficient, but can it be done if power comes by a cable from a friendly ship? But then you need to chill and compress oxygen and hydrogen for storage, so most likely not worth it.

      @@Wuestenkarsten you mean phases of non readiness. This is/was due to the slashing of the bundeswehr internal sparepart stockpiles, maintenance capabilities and logistic division under minister of Defense Guttenberg in 2011. The first Unit endered Service in 2005 and is still in service, there is no planned decomissioning date.
      The only submarines that got decomissioned in the last 20 years were the type 206A uboats, the predecessor of the 212A

    This Submarine looks amazing however those countries with nuclear-powered submarines UK ( My country ) US , France etc won't go back to diesel-electric submarines because they can stay underwater longer the only thing that stops them from staying underwater is the resupply of provisions !!!!!!!!

      well nuclear submarines are significanly louder and have limitations operating in shallow waters.
      There is a job for both systems

      The US is the only country operating exclusively nuclear submarines. The UK and France aren’t “going back” to diesel-electric subs - they never left them in the first place.
      Nuclear submarines have many advantages but also drawbacks. They have to be a certain size to accommodate the reactor, coolant loops, and steam turbines. These are also inherently noisy so they need very sophisticated insulation and dampening, which adds even more size.
      Size is not a problem when you’re doing blue water operations, like escorting a carrier group. But when you’re sneaking up on Russian ports in the Baltic, a nuclear submarine is less than ideal.
      Also you have the cost. Nuclear subs are expensive to procure and maintain. If you don’t even need the endurance and speed (like, again, in the Baltic), you’ll be better served with a couple of diesel subs than a single big nuclear sub.

      I think AIP is a serious threat to nuclear, you can build 3-4 of them to 1 nuclear boat, they are more stealthy, carry the same sensors and weapons and can operate in shallower waters.

      Since WW1 "U-boat" is a German submarine, since WW2 a "panzer" is a Geman tank. U-Boot, German = submarine, Panzer, German = tank.

      Difficult to say without vlassified information. However the sub is 20 osh years old so yeah a new sub might be superior.
      This is why the CD Version is now getting produced.

      I very much doubt that , the type 212 can only stay out at sea for 50 days . Without resupply . British , USA nukes . Can stay out for 180 days easily . Also the Australian boats potentially will have to travel great distances

Designed and build the type IIA IIB and Prototypes of the Type VII for the kriegsmarine . . Had snorkels , advanced hydraulics , airconditioning , high tech equipment , in the mid 30s . selling their designs and subrmarines to poland , norway , turky , sweden sovjet union romania etc etc .
      Where the germans started to incorporate the more advanced equipment in to their own designs mid to late war 6 years after the dutch where already using them .
      where developing 3 cilinder submarines in 1939-1940 before the invasion , designed a 3 cilinder submarine for the brits in 1941-42 for the brits , Not build due to cast and developed in to the Dolfijn class after the war . Designed the Zwaardvis class. And Walruss class submarines , having the premiere submarine training course and school .
      SO what has germany actualy designed since the war . Absolutely nothing only some low capacity brown water submarines. Absolutely no experience in Bleu water attack subrmarines.
      Even more funny the dutch desginged their first home made frigates back in the 80s
      SO please enlighten me how a country that was banned from building ocean going submarines , for decades and not even having a viable naval design bureau to build frigates . And even to day the geramns need dutch exptersise to build and design frigates and other maritime craft
      . Have the experience in building them , have the experience in operating them at extremly high levels . and covert missions .
      SO please explain where do the germans get that experience that should be higher than the dutch . .

    No diesel-electric submarine is the most advanced system in the world. Nuclear submarines are. Some countries don't have the infrastructure to support nuclear submarines, so they have class two vessels.

      Are just different.
      The nuclear sub is great if you have a blue navy, but they make more noise underwather.
      The diesel-electric subd are more silent than the nuclear one, but they are great for a regional navy, where they will struggle in a blue navy without having designated close harbors how to stop and refill their propulsion systems.
      It's all up to what navy you are. But in therm of underwather deadlyness regarding a sea fight. The most silent diesel-electric subs are harder to find, so they have an advantage on that.

    make a good sub, then save money on power station (it's not nuclear) making it practically useless in today's battlefields

      Really ignorant comment. These subs are meant to mainly move in coastal waters, not that far from their native bases and be able to get close to the shore - wich is something the much larger nuclear subs generally can’t. These can move under water for a couple of weeks without having to surface and they are also significantly more quiet, wich is pretty damn important for a sub…
      (You can also get several of these for the price of one nuclear)

      @@e.m7116yes exactly, these German subs are mainly littoral, but can go blue waters if necessary. The newer models used by Singapore Navy have extended air endurance to 1.5 months without snorkeling. 1.5 months. Enough to go anywhere and take out objectives and back without ever surfacing. The dude didn’t know his stuffs… don’t mind him 😂
