Jet JBOS 5 Oscillating Spindle Sander

- Sanding curved pieces of wood evenly and to a high standard is not easy. I have tried many home made methods over the years with nowhere near perfect results.
The Jet JBOS 5 solves the problem and in a sturdy "Trade" rated package that comes with a very generous supply of accessories. In this video I introduce the machine, show you how to get it set up and do a short demonstration of its use.

Just bought this bobbin sander, this is an awesome machine. I make wooden clocks and this will make sanding the cogs a whole lot quicker. Great video as usual keep up the great work.

Another good review. I have had that machine for a couple of years and also really like. It does do a great job of collecting the dust and great when you have to sand a curve.
I do think it would be beneficial to have a removeable guide pin on the table(similar to a router table). It believe it would make it easier to get an even pressure on the sanding sleeve at times.

Nice tip for changing the diameter of the tubing.
I think the general consensus for cleaning sanding disks, belts, drums, etc. is to use the rubber cleaning sticks that are sold for that purpose. An old shoe will also work in a pinch.

As well as vacuuming the sanding sleeves, I occasionally use a rubber cleaning block, just to get a bit more out of them :-) Great machine.

Yes, rubber sole. It's useful because you can just put your hand in the shoe to hold it against the sander; it's like a ready-made tool.

Nice video Peter. I used to use my drill press for sanding as well. I used it with no bearing issues for a long time. The trick to longer bearing life is to use a sanding drum that has a bearing on the bottom. Make a drill press table from plywood or mdf then make another piece of plywood or mdf with a cut out the diameter of the back half of the bearing. The bearing rests against the plywood and the plywood/mdf and the bearing of the sanding sleeve take most of the abuse. If you need to access more of the sleeve to make larger/deeper curves just use one piece of plywood with a recess a touch larger than the diameter of the sanding drum bearing and make sure the back of the bearing is touching the plywood/mdf. The drill bearings will likely still wear out but you will probably get triple the life. I don’t recall the name of the sanding drum with the bearing but I’m sure a search will bring it up. I gave mine away when I got my drum sander. Also, if you buy a drum sander try to buy the oscillating style as the sanding sleeve will last longer. A cleaning eraser will help as well.

New Brit Workshop It is a nice unit Peter. My oscillating sander is not nearly as heavy duty but was what I could afford at the time and it has been a decent unit and I can’t justify replacing it.
Have you had a chance to try one of the Festool hoses with the gray sleeve and the integrated power cord and if so what do you think of it?

What I want to know is can I do Varies degrees of corners on this machine? and is there sanding attachments that can sand mirror finish stainless steel so that I can polish the finish back into it proficiently? Only reviews Ive found are over sanding wood.
Hi Shanarah, If you mean different radius corners then yes yo can by using different diameter bobbins. You will not be able to use this for mirror finish work. In order to do that you will need special equipment and polishing paste. Peter
Hi Peter thanks for a good review. One question, will the bobbin/axle stay perpendicular to the table if you sand thicker pieces that put a force higher up on the spindle, for instance 2" piece of wood? Like other spindle sanders It's only supported at one end of the shaft and I have no idea if that's stable enough for my intended use.

Hi Keith, I will have to look at mine again as I have no done a sleeve change on a spindle for a while. I think that loosening the nut at the top and twisting gently anti clockwise is how I have done it. I don't think that I have ever had a problem. Peter
I just watched this and thanks for the video. I’m looking to replace my Delta Boss spindle sander that I’ve been happy with until I bent something that now causes vibration. I’m not a big Jet fan but was wondering how happy you’ve been with this sander?

I bought one recently and I just used today for the first time and I feel like it's vibrating, like if the shaft would not be rotating straight (it looks like it is checking with a square). Could you please tell me if this is normal?
Maybe I am pushing too hard... I can listen to something like while you are sanding there's a little boucing effect as mine, but your hands doesn't look shaky).

Hi Mercedes, Mine does not vibrtae at all. When it is swiched on the bobbin rotates and goes up and down very smoothly. Peter

Did you have any problems with the bobbin not being true? I am getting a lot of vibration with the machine I just received which I am assuming isn't normal watching yours in action. Thanks. Ian
+Ian Taylor Hi Ian, No problems at all. See if you can check whether it is just the one bobbin or if it is the mount (ie all the bobbins wobble) then report it to your dealer. If it is Axminster I am sure that it will not be a problem. Peter
Thanks for the video. I just got one of these second hand and it makes a bit of a noise and I thought it may be a bearing. It's at the top of the oscillation. Yours seems to make a similar noise. Nothing is loose and it looks like no run out. I'm hoping they all do this. Any thoughts?
I suspect it is the same on all of them. Most machinery will have a characteristic running noise and much of that will be due to design. As long as it does the job and does not overheat it should be fine. Peter

One improvement I'd like to see would be to use Bobbins built like the (no longer made) Carroll Sanders - so that you can replace the sandpaper rather than have to buy the more expensive sleeves.

Dear Sir: congratulations for your review.
I'm looking for a quiet (I hate noise) bobbin sander for my instrument making workshop and I'm looking some brands and models. Of course, this Jet looks even more than I really need for my work. But, I see that one have to change the whole axis when need to change diameter, while other machines, like Triton (too noisy, I think) it has a single fix axis and one only have to change the rubber bobbin and sleeve, so it's easier and faster.
Also, I've been looking at Axminster hobby bobbin sander, which has a less power motor that could also work. I wonder if rubber bobbins are compatible for every machine.
I would like to know if you've deal with these good and bad features.

Hi Asier, I am only familiar with this particular bobbin sander. It is very easy to change the bobbin, it might take 30 seconds. It is quiet but I do not know what noise other models might make. I really like mine and I use it quite often. The dust extraction is good as well. Peter

Oh, that changes my point of view. I was concerned about the axis durability as one has to screw one and again every bobbin change, but I suppose it is hard enough.
About the noise, I've seen Triton videos and they seem to be over-revoluted (2000 rpm), brush motor and plastic shell, so they sound even more than an old Dremel. I really hate sharp motor noise and Triton advise for 89db!!!

Shame Axminster's replacement loadings don't fit so nicely I have the floor standing version of this and have a 75&100mm loadings currently stuck half way on. I wouldn't mind but at £15&£18 each they are bloody expensive

Could you please tell me the power of that motor? As I saw in Jet website, they produce that model both in 1/2 and 1 hp. I found a second hand 1/2 hp one, but I'm not sure it has power enough for instrument making.

Hi Asier, Mine is 650 watts which I believe that is about 0.87 Horse Power. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop 650W motor, JET have scaled it back to a 375W motor now, but the price has not dropped
Yes, it is a better motor and there was never any issue with power. It consumes half the electricity which is a very good thing. Peter
