- A few years ago, I made a video showing how to make your own tall planters. And then a year or two later, I showed a smaller version. But now when I try to find the tall round trash cans, I can’t find them any more! So I decided to update the video with tall round trash cans that are available right now on Amazon. And I have to say, these are probably my favorite!
These planters were really easy to make, and affordable! For $60.00 I was able to make a pair of really tall planters to go with the other 4 I have already made.
If you are looking for the things I used in this video, here are the 2 most important things to get:
Tall Round Trash Cans that I used (35 inches tall) : amzn.to/37vHGqX
A little bit shorter trash cans (26 inches tall): amzn.to/3cW0osQ
Heritage Chalk Paint: amzn.to/3fg7iuC
This is a really fast and inexpensive way to dress up your front door. You could also use them with your horse jumps, as decorations next to your standards.

They turned out so pretty, but the original colors were extremely pretty. ❤️
They look nice. I do like the original color better. Adding feet to them would be even more eye appeal! Great idea!
I like the original color better too!
You can always use a plastic bowl instead of the pine cones. A plastic bowl will fit well and won't go all the way down it will fit really tight that's what I do I hope I'm making sense
I sort of like the original colours!!! They're cooler than the painted!!!!
I do too. At $30.00 trash can you can also buy a regular planter at any box store. Yikes
Ya me too
Yep, like the before better. Thanks for the idea!
Agree like the colors not painted white
Agree
I like the trash cans unpainted! The look really nice just out of th box but I guess it's a matter of the look your going for!
I really like this idea of using trash cans because tall planters can be so pricey. I’m gonna make some and add something for feet. Also think I’m going to spray paint mine with that stone look textured paint and put a protector finish on top to secure as I live in a pretty windy/rainy area. Thanks for your video.
Nice video, still like the original metal color
Susana R. So do I, I really like the metal color, the way it comes!! Why make extra work for yourself??
@@carolynhester8805 If one just uses the trash cans as they are, where's the crafting? You can't say, "I made this" if you just buy them and fill them up
@@lisasrexstar7796 Nope, but you can say "look what I bought for about a third of the price of other planters"! Works for me.
@@jtidema Agreed!
The original color looks awesome. Great idea!
Hey cool video. My neighbor does cake decorating she took a disposable pastry bag and some weather sealer/caulking and made a pretty design that I painted over it aded some nice raised texture.
That’s a good and easy idea… Especially with those Russian cake decorating tips. Big. Detailed. Cool.
BEAUTIFUL!
Genius!
picture!
I too liked the original color! Looked more stylish!
I like the original color too
Plain, brush paint, spray paint, splatter paint, decoupage fabric, decals, etc….just as she said….customize to your liking!
GREAT IDEA….THANK YOU!
smart way to filled up with pine cones. I'm haven't thought of that use pine cone. Great idea. Thank you for sharing.
I use styrofoam in lg planters
I use empty plastic containers to fill the planters...makes the planter so light
I have been doing a smaller scale on my porch..the small trash cans at walmart 1.67 each put small hole in bottom,, plant flowers or minature veggies,,, put next to railing,, everybody who sees it goes wow over it
They are totally fantastic! Thanks for the tips for saving money on making your own tall stately planters. I've been looking at these at the local nursery for years now and could never bring myself to lay down over a $100-200 for them. Now I know what I will be making later this week! Thanks again for posting such a great tip that allows me to get the tall planters at a budget friendly price.
When drilling into plastic, use your drill in reverse to drill forward. It'll be less likely to crack or split.
Thank you for that tip!
Candle and a screwdriver or a soldering iron.
Or a glue gun minus the glue or a wood burner...lol
Just use a smaller drill bit to start it and then use the larger drill bit.
What an fantastic idea, they all turned out so pretty! I suffer with Degenerative Disc Disease, and find bending really painful, so using your idea, and adding feet, will save my poor back! As you said, I can paint them in whatever colours I like. That's what I love about DIY's, we can share our ideas with each other, and then add our own twist to those ideas to make them work for us. THANK YOU for sharing. ❣❣❣
I hope you still have the tops. You can make hanging planters .
How do you make the hanging planters?
Glue the lid closed so it will hold gravel, potting soil & a plant. Drill holes for drainage. Drill holes on the sides so you can add the chain to hang them. I'm not very good at explaining. I hope you can visualize what I have tried to describe. Hopefully, she'll do a video making hanging baskets out of the dome type garbage can lids.
Great idea!
To fill the planters you can use paper either run threw a shreddar or crushed in a ball. Pine cones was a great idea.
One lady did a video showing her planters with empty milk jugs in the bottom. Another lady uses any paper as well as table scraps which are compost & turn into dirt.
i will definitely use the pine cones from the yard good idea!
@@jujubeantoo you can also use empty cans, soda cans or bottles to allow drainage rinsed of course and with lids if u have them
Doesn't the paper compact down a lot as soon as it gets wet? The pine cones would eventually rot and compact too, but I think it would take awhile.
They looked better before they were painted.
Totally agree that’s the one thing I wouldn’t have done, otherwise great job! They looked royal as is.
She stated in the video that was the look she wanted. You do you, no need to criticize.
She meant ....
I love them unpainted, but still look great 👍
I'm sure 😊
Should add ball feet can buy balls to go on the bottom to help with drainage.
Michael's or cans would make good feet too
I like the original can as is, they go with my outdoor decor as is; however, I am a faux planter thumb person.
Love the pine cone idea as I always struggle with moving a large, heavy planter and have pine cones to spare, as well! Thank you!
Thank you so much for showing the finished product FIRST in order to see if your audience even wants to make the product. Other designers try to trick people and make people wait until the end of their video because they want you to watch their whole video. I just skip to the finish and check it out to see if i want to make the item when they do that
Good point, but that’s also went to fast forward slider bar is for. You can also scan to see if it’s worth your time. But a good video maker I will always show the finished product, then give the details, and then show the finished product again. That’s the basics for a good presentation. Tell people what you’re going to tell them, then tell them the details, and then wrap it up by summarizing what you told them.
It was seriously so sweet (and kinda sassy haha) how you said, "Sure they may not be painted to your taste but you can paint them however you like" ... great attitude. I'm going to take a couple of looks at some other vids of yours now :) well done
I love the original colors
Very nice and I really like that you painted them, now they go so much better with your house colors than the original. Thanks for sharing.👍🌹
These planters are beautiful and such a good idea!
Speay foam works great as a filler just use some sticks or some branches to make a path for drain holes when its a setup and dry just pull them out
At first glance, I recognized trash cans. I agree with others in the comments that the original color is more convincing for a planter. I do love the pinecone idea however. Thank you for that.
Very pretty, love this idea. I fill my planters with cut up pool noodles. Gotta find a trash🗑 Thank you 🌺
These will be good for my birds of paradise that go out each summer on the porch! They getting huge , so thanks, cause planters are super expensive in that size !! ❤❤❤
I really liked the original color of them as well but my mom likes the white as well never thought of using pine cones we have a ton as well I’m allergic so I use Styrofoam in my big planters.
You did a great job. Great way to use up pine cones and trash pain
Brilliant idea
I'm going to use this idea.lhave plenty of pine trees, this will help me get rid of debris to. Thanks.
I like the color they were. It even shows up better near the house siding.
I like the original colors too but good idea
They look great
Yo dry project is so beautiful👍 Save A Buck and good you go girl.🌱🌾
Excellent idea about the pinecones !!!
What a wonderful idea. I just ordered one trash can. Thank you!
That's my kitchen trash can 😊
Its so nice. This is a great transformation from trash can to planter.
I might try this. TFS 😊
Great tips, thank you!Who knew that tall planers was a thing and that they cost that much?I certainly didn't and having watched you;I am sold!
Love the original color of the cans.
thanks for the info on the paint. Since I'm a fairly newbie at DIY-ing, it really helps. And so many people just skim on the the paint info I guess because they already know the basics and think everyone else does too.
I have to agree, the original color is better. However, its your so do you. Thanks for sharing.
i liv those...all of em infact
Walmart has a set of 6 flip top tall trash cans for $60......sometimes they go low 35 for set.
What a clever idea regarding the pine cones.
I like the new arrangement.
Love love this almost brought so much wood but this is awesome
You are brilliant! Thank you so much. Great idea!
Very nice!
Lovely & thank you for sharing 😍 I never would have thought to use pine cones but that's a good idea thank you thank you thank you
I absolutely LOVE these! I am going to give it a try this Spring. Thank you so much.for your awesome video. Jann
Could have left him there original taking the lid flipped it upside down seal all the cracks on it and turned just the lid into a flower box and put it on top of the tall portion and it would have really looked elegant
Good idea.
Wow
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing
I've just stumbled across this video. What a great idea, I love this!!!!
Very pretty
Thank you! 😊
Here's a hack on drilling the drainage holes: Use a 3/4 inch paddle bit, set the drill on reverse, and don't press down too hard on the plastic when drilling. It will give a precise 3/4 inch drainage without damaging the plastic.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful idea with us. I love it! How to order the trash can with lids? Thanks in advance!
I like black planters. The colors pop
You are phenomenal! Thank you soo much! Ooohwee!! You Go Girl!
Love this! Thank you
Very Nice
Today, 9/20/20, they are $75 and that's just for one!!!
They look beautiful! Thanks for sharing this.
You are ready funny but looks gorgeous Foreal!!!!😁🥲
I love it great job.
I'm close to 60 years old & hadn't been to the dentist in over 20 years! I broke a tooth six years ago and broke a different tooth four years ago. I stay at home most days and dont always brush my teeth. Dreading what the prognosis might be, last week, I went to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned.
Luckily, I have strong teeth. Complete x-rays revealed I have no decay, including my broken teeth with missing enamel and exposed dentin. The dentist was shocked that my teeth were in "A1" condition after decades without professional dental care and that I was not having any pain or problems with my broken teeth.
The dentist considered my broken teeth an emergency situation and they should be filled immediately. I was told leaving the dentin exposed allowed food, liquids, saliva and bacteria to travel down the tubuals in the dentin directly to the tooth root. The dentist insisted that this would lead to root canals of my broken teeth.
I decided to continue to care for my teeth & body as always.....with moderation. I avoid medications as much as possible, eat a varied diet, rich in dairy, nuts and proteins. I eat fresh veggies as often as possible.
I must note that I do drink Coca-cola and Pepsi products and eat pastries/sweets occasionally throughout the week. I don't have skin breakouts, allergies or food sensitivities.
My point is, there is no educated nutritional special approach to healthy teeth. A varied diet, not vegan, not vegetarian, not keto and etc. is healthy for teeth and body. Eat everything! Get nutrients from everywhere!
I do try to limit consumption of highly processed food, but remembering my rule of moderation. The human body is naturally designed to compensate for varied food consumption. Total elimination of foods or excessive regular consumption of certain foods is not healthy! Moderation for everything.
I must stress the importance of hygiene. Many nutrients are obsorbed through oral capillaries without entering the stomach. Keep your mouth clean! Chew slowly to allow absorbstion of micronutrients. The key to a clean mouth is water. Eventhough I don't always brush, I do always rinse. I thoroughly rinse my teeth with water after eating or drinking anything. I avoid swooshing water under my tongue so natural enzymes can continue to break down food micronutrients ready to be absorbed by the bloodstream.
Keep a clean mouth and eat a varied diet for strong, healthy teeth and body.
Thanks for the trash can idea! The paint is actually called Heirloom Traditions Paint.
Great idea and I do like the white
I like the color you painted
Your planters are real nice and your son is handsome
Such a great idea! I really enjoyed watching your video. I learned something new today. Thanks
Great video very clever idea🙂
Great loved your plants so beautiful
Great idea 👌Thanks for sharing 🙏🙏 ❤
So nice
Wonderful video. I wonder how we could repurpose the tops that came with them?
You could repurpose the lid by fixing lid shut, drill some holes & presto hanging basket. If you were to put dirt directly into it , i'd line it with a plastic bag so as not to rust it out too quickly. Latex paint may work also to protect metal parts
I like the original color also it looks modern.
Thanks for this awesome idea, I actually like the painted planter’s great job!
Love the white look. Thanks
To stop cracking when drilling. Heat the drill bit with some flame
Thanks for that idea!
Such a great idea!!! It turned out to look so cool!!
BEAUTIFUL!!! Thanks for the share. Cheers!
Love it!
Beautiful.
I love this idea.
Great idea to use pine ones as filler. 😊
Great idea!!!! Large planters are VERY expensive so your idea is very clever & smart! I’m subscribing! Thx 😊
Good ideas
Looks Fabulous.
I'm gonna do two of the Tall Planters.
Finger Crossed 🤞
A set of 3 as a rule always looks better
I love the idea of using pine cones to take up space and be less weight. Do your plants drop down when they decompose?
Gorgeous!
I am a new subscriber . they are gorgeous !
I use pool noodles to fill up the bottom. I cut them into pieces.
These are wonderful ty for posting
Thumbs up ideas. Volume could be louder.
I like the raised planter idea but all the extra dirt and pine cones seem unnecessary to me unless you really wanted a plant to grow larger inside that container. I would still drill holes but weight and or stack bricks inside. The pine cones will decay and you may end up with basically a compost pile in there. I do like the look, event painted. Looks like cement. A new technique is to add baking soda or coffee grinds to chalk paint to texture items. I maybe would somehow build a shelf for inside. Leave the plant in original pot or a pot that can be affixed to edge of the plant tower. Has a lip to hang over? I do have a green thumb. I double pot all the time into everything. I cut down the black plastic gallon and bigger containers that came with plants to fit in more shallow pots. Even soda bottles etc. It’s way less tedious to lift an inner pot out and change out a plant. But I really like the trash can idea as a raised look. In place of a giant cement pot i cant move. Lots of potential with this idea.
How do you keep the dirt from falling in between the pinecone's....
Hi, we own a landscape construction company and have some landscape fabric, that would work. Landscape fabric is what some people put down before they plant a garden ect., it keep the weeds from coming up yet allows for drainage. Maybe cheesecloth would work, you can get that at any fabric store and is cheaper!
