I am the rapier fencer in the video.
I practiced capo ferro style rapier and modern fencing epee a little.
I am the manager of a small mixed sword fighting group in Korea.
Most of the swordsmen I've experienced use Korean traditional swordsmanship and Japanese or Chinese swordsmanship.
I'm very used to tactics with long reach, and I've never fight with a weapon longer than a rapier.
Another rapier fencer I'm practicing with is very good against spears and halberds.
It is true that the rapier is at a disadvantage. But it's not an impossible fight.
I was very inexperienced. I learned a lot on this day.

If you want to beat a polearm with a sword, you need to be very aggressive and close distance quickly. Because of the forces involved the polearm can easily overpower the rapier and blow through its defense. The whole point of keeping your point forward is to threaten the opponent, but when your opponent has a massive reach advantage, this threat is empty. Best bet is to rush and dodge, in my experience. Even that is iffy. Mixed weapon fighting against polearms is very difficult and is a great example of why they dominated the battlefield for so much of history.

The rapierist might as well not bother holding his sword in an extended guard like that, it does nothing to stop the Halberd. His best chance would probably have been to half sword and try to close that way, but even then it's such an uneven matchup.
This is why Halberds were battlefield/guard weapons and rapiers were self defence weapons! Imagine the fear facing off against a huge ass axe spike pole like that too. XD

I think the difference between military martial arts and civilian self-defense martial arts is not the difference between strength and weakness.
I often spar with the sabre, a military weapon that was active in the same era as the rapier, and although the rapier is a weapon for civilian self-defense, it has an advantage over the sabre.
"Military use" and "civil use" only refer to their intended use.
Of course, it is true that rapiers have a disadvantage compared to halberds and spears.
However, it is not an impossible fight and I failed because of my lack of skill.
My colleague is good at fighting opponents with spears or halberds with rapiers.

      @@sumire-fanclub
There may be a bit of cultural misinterpretation here.
When the halberd was a battlefield weapon, the halberd and the pike were the ones deployed up front to challenge anything in front.
When the European sabre was a battlefield weapon, the musket was the thing that challenged anything up front. The sabre was not the weapon meant to be first in line.
Only in the case of cavalry did the sabre become the first rank weapon, and you probably do not fence from horseback very often.
The people here more likely mean 'Main Arm'(halberd, spear, musket, automatic rifle) vs 'Side Arm'(rapier, sidesword, sabre, pistol) when they say military/battlefield vs civilian/self defense

Actors fight with weapons made of safe materials to avoid injury. However, safety weapons cannot be confronted. The length of the halbud I made is 210cm. 2.8kg. The ax is made of pp blade. The center of the axe is an iron pipe. The stick is a thin iron pipe and a PPC pipe. When a stronger impact than normal is transmitted, it bends. This is to prevent the opponent from getting hurt. I'm really surprised no one has mentioned that the rapier user should have tried to use different angles of attack. Attacking on a line like that against superior reach would almost always end in failure. By mixing up angles of approach it forces the halberd user to have to aim for a moving target rather than just timing the attack.
It was really satisfying seeing a halberd go up against a sword. I think spears and long pole arms are very underrated due to lack of appearance in movies, shows, and games. Nothing beats "put it on the end of a long stick" for improving a weapon's performance and abilities.

Why does the person with the rapier have a completely exposed hand? That seems needlessly risky. Years ago, I fractured one of my sparring partner's fingers on their offhand with one of Lancelot Chan's Realistic Sparring Weapons, simulating a single-handed sword. That was with some forearm/hand protection, though it may have left the fingers exposed. & I'm not large or strong at all. (It wasn't a bad fracture or anything, but still.) With a heavy two-handed weapon, the danger to exposed fingers must be high. I wonder if this also affect their sparring, as I know I'd be more reluctant to try to grab a halberd (an important technique) if I had no hand protection.

There's a reason that, during the same time period when rapiers were very popular, guards in many european countries used halberds. Usually longer than that one, too. Not an unwinnable fight by any means, but a noticeable disadvantage for a rapier user. I think a shorter but thicker sword might have a better advantage by having more steel to work the enemy weapon with.

With the rapier you want to close the distance if your opponent has a pole arm. Don't stay at the range they have an advantage. Block then close to engage.
Polearms are great to keep you away at a distance. Not so great close up.
The Rapier/Smallsword are for aggressive types . Not necessarily for playing defense. It's for the risk taker.
The length of rapier can matter a bit as does the stiffness.
A 36" rapier is a fairly good length if you aren't used to longer swords at all.
Then you can work your way up to 41" and then 45". It's a process over time.
    Increased weight does effect you.
    I prefer a 36-40" blade .
A shorter blade may mean you need to up the Vitalism and Aggression on your part.

Thus it should not be taken that way as the thing being taught is how to use the weapon not what weapons it was designed to combat. Furthermore swords generally are sidearms not primary weapons so it would make sense for a manuscript to show them facing more battlefield oriented weapons due to the fact if one had lost their main weapon they'd be at least able to protect themselves with their sidearm though of course it is dependent on circumstance.

Even if he had a dagger, he would still have a difficult time against the halberd.
Also it should be noted that this "halberd" in the video...is shorter than the real one.
If they used the same actual length... The rapier guy would mostly lose.

That's like going again an assault rifle with a handgun. Maybe next time bring a shield to make use of your left hand.

This bout seemed to have less movement than many others that I've seen on this channel. I'm guessing that more movement would be the only chance that the shorter weapon would have. Maybe I'm wrong on that point, but I can't see how the shorter weapon would have a chance without significant lateral movement.

Rapier doesn’t have the heft to knock the pole arm aside. A long sword would do better but still very disadvantaged.

Idk it wasn't a solid rapier it was the flimsy one and the dude using it wasn't reacting fast enough I wouldn't underestimate the rapier but Halberd is legit a good weapon spear and axe combined

This is something I HEAVILY CRITICIZE on Dark Souls and will surely go on on Elden Ring: *WEAPON REALISM AND LOGIC.*
In this case: 1- how a long weapon like the Halberd REQUIRES the use of both hands(and Dark Souls 4 brings back power stance, which is DOUBLE the illogic). 2- Also he grabs the Halberd in the end, not in the middle like Dark Souls.

Halberd dude is holding back, or just too slow. As a halberdier of 24 years I can tell, you gotta be quicker than that. And have a close game.

Если бы топор был бы настоящим, то на конце был бы большой вес, и так быстро он своей алебардой работать не смог.
А тут у алебарды вес игрушечный.

The rapier is definitely a good weapon and it could definitely beat a halberd of course if the person using it is good enough also the blade might have to be less flexible just enough to at least hold off another sword idk maybe I'm right

I wish From Software had introduced more logic and realism in weapons in their "brand new IP" "Dark Souls 4"... But they just copy paste the same nonsensical logic from Dark Souls(I AM NOT, NOT, criticizing the games itself, which I love).
So I guess we'll see players Power Stancing Halberds: using a Halberd on each hands. Because it's realistic.

    • @philipearakaki

Well, there's nothing really stoping you from dual wielding halberds in real life
