Exploring the Tide Pool Creatures! ADVENTURE FOR KIDS

- Exploring Tide Pools and the Tide Pool Creatures! This is called a brittle star and you should be careful how you are holding it because it can actually detach its legs. They crawl across the sea floor using their flexible arms for locomotion. They are also known as serpent stars.
And here "blue Linckia" or the blue star is a common inhabitant of the coral reef in the shallow waters of tropical Pacific ocean. There are approximately 1,500 species of sea stars in the world. They have a mouth on the underside of their body to feed on ocean bottom debris, as well as mussels and clams. Sea stars are capable of regenerating body parts from body fragments. For example, if a starfish were cut in half, two whole starfish would grow from both halves.
So, cutting them in half won’t kill then, rather it just makes more of them. Fisherman learned this the hard way when they tried to reduce their numbers as the star fish were devouring their clam beds.
For me the Blue star represents the ideal tropical scene.
There are also are unidentified species, which can be quite terrifying.
Then there are eels. This is a baby Moray eel. Looks like he got trapped under the rock and scared of us big monsters looking at him. These eels have sharp teeth and will attack if they are provoked. They can be found in openings of rocks and coral, so keep your hands away from these areas.
OH, look what I found, sea slugs. The sea slug is also commonly referred to as a sea cucumber. This is mainly because of the of the sea slug's shape and the fact that it is normally found on coral or rocks normally being very still, making it look like a type of aquatic vegetable. The sea slug is a herbivorous animal and feeds on plankton and decaying matter on the ocean floor. It can move along grazing on the rocks and coral reefs for algae. By munching on the decomposing plant matter on the ocean floor the sea slug is of great benefit to any marine environment.
Let’s see what else we find. Look at this crazy STARFISH that only has four legs. First time I saw one of these starfish with only 4 legs and not five. Cool.
Oh, this is a great find. The crown-of-thorns starfish! This large sea star may have up to 23 arms, although 13 to 18 are more commonly observed. The spines are venomous and can deliver a painful sting even if the animal has been dead for two or three days. Looks so pretty, duh.
Of course there are all kind of fish, Love the bright color of this one. This fish will change a color to dark blue when it senses danger I suppose. Don’t ask me how I know that.
Blue stars are everywhere. Look on the bottom of star. I just love their color.
Sea Cucumbers move slowly 3 inches per hour along the ocean floor sucking up sand and debris. Incredibly, over the span of a year, this creature can vacuum up to 200 pounds of sand! Not many sea cucumbers are left around here. Would you imagine, people actually eat them. In some countries sea cucumber is considered gourmet food. Looks like it would taste like rubber to me. So populations of sea cucumbers are already rapidly depleted due to over harvesting and upsetting the balance in the ecosystem. So we will not tell anyone where we found it. Hope you enjoy.
