Valley Lodge, yas! I mentioned them in 00s videos, as their first two albums in 02 & 09 featured college mate John Kimbrough of Walt Mink, who re-recorded two of the songs he wrote for them for his Teen Judge project in 2018, also recommended.
I second Tommy's recommendation that they listen through the communty's recommendations and circle back to them, which I've been suggesting lately. King Gizz can be annoying, but they do have talent and every third album has some great stuff.
My #1 is the third and last album of the Norwegian psych prog band Spirits of the Dead. They aren't officially broken up that I know of, but haven't heard from them in a decade. For some reason the album was removed from streaming services which sucks for you. I have the LP (well worth getting, great design) and FLAC files.
Glasgow's Hidden Masters is a one and done Rise Above band that is an absolutely must hear for fans of The Dukes of Stratosphear and psych rock. They swing like Cream -- check out videos of some amazing live performances. Alasdair "Alpha Michelle" Mitchell went on to be in Rosalie Cunningham's band for a while (former leader of Purson, her albums are also highly recommended -- third album To Shoot Another Day is due this year).
2013 is stuffed full of really great psych related albums. The dark melancholic folk prog of Wolf People, expansive Danish psych of Causa Sui, flute-driven doom psych of Blood Ceremony, the brilliant Beatles-influenced Purson, more Danish psych prog with Fuzz Manta, Austin's massively underrated garage psych/prog band White Denim, Nasheville's All Them Witches, Chicago's The Luck of Eden Hall, Polish Canterbury prog The White Kites, The Black Watch, The Greek Theatre, Papir, E.L. Heath, The Dandelion, The Dials, Motorpsycho, Papernut Cambridge, Soft Hearted Scientists. Whee!
    1. Spirits Of The Dead - Rumours Of A Presence
    2. Hidden Masters - Of This & Other Worlds
    3. Wolf People - Fain
    4. Savages - Silence Yourself
    5. Causa Sui - Euporie Tide
    6. Blood Ceremony - The Eldritch Dark
    7. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City
    8. Purson - The Circle And The Blue Door
    9. Magic Circle - Magic Circle
    10. Beastmilk - Climax
    11. Fuzz Manta - The Stonewolf
    12. White Denim - Corsicana Lemonade
    13. All Them Witches - Lightning At The Door
The Luck Of Eden Hall - Victoria Moon
    The White Kites - Missing

Crystal, the most Prince adjacent artist on my list is a “lost” 80s album! Two ladies and a DJ doing sensual disco proto-darkwave with world music influences from Germany fit for the club or dancing in your living room. The songs were recorded in the early 80s but they were dropped from the record label. Resurrected with a 2013 release. This is my plea for you to listen to Saada Bonaire. Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt
Drake - Nothing Was the Same
    Article Monkeys - AM
The Flaming Lips - The Terror
    Avicii - True
    Worst of the year:
Now, I will be very unsure if anyone knows at all wtf this even is, but I discovered this some time in high school, and idk if you’d even consider it music at all, and it’s as unknown and perturbing as you can get, but I recommend that you investigate it..
Menometrorrhagia - Extreme Gore Noise Terror
That is my worst of the year. The genre is listed as “gorenoise”, and it’s basically disturbing and interminable machine gun drums and noise bass and vomit and stomach noises. I think it might be the worst thing I’ve ever listened to. Who tf is this for is what I ask..wow.

    • @AsItShouldBePodcast

Believe it or not I actually ran across that Menometrorrhagia album while digging around for my list! It is indeed garbage beyond all description. Not sure how I failed to put it on my "Worst of" list. I think I just found it so try-too-hard - like desperately trying to be as "X-treme" as possible with music not being even a remote part of the consideration - that I decided not to give it any attention. But I co-sign on your pick and your comments!

@@AsItShouldBePodcast Thanks Paul! Very surprised you knew about it, you must dig real deep into research! 😊
And yeah, I totally get what you’re saying about it. It’s my worst, but in truth, it’s impossible for me to really judge it because: whoever made it, it’s exactly what they were going for. So, it’s hard for to truly judge it, it is absolutely trying too had to be disturbing and gory and edgy, but for listening experience, it’s a negative zero. 😂

I was trying to think of how I would describe the album to you yesterday. All I could come up with was…sometime in late 1986, Prince was stuck in NYC for the summer. So he wandered around Queens, Brooklyn and Harlem, watching the people living their lives. He’s doing this one hot afternoon when he suddenly runs into Peter Gabriel at the local Bodega. They exchange pleasantries then venture into the fading daylight. After an hour of walking together, Prince looks at Peter and says, “You wanna make an album?”

Alrighty then! It is 2013. Funny y'all asking us to recommend stuff to Crystal when I remember her in a few videos saying that when someone tells her something like, "Oh, you'll love this! You like this and that, so you'll love this" that instantly she hates it or is just not interested. Ha! I can understand that, believe me. I feel weird recommending anything to anyone because, like, who am I to do that? I'm no expert. I just like what I like and that's it. Everyone's like that, really. I appreciate when someone is interested in what I like but at the same time I do feel odd about it. Ha!
Speaking of which, I have a top 7 for 2013. So, here goes:
    7. Mosquito - The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Not a very well-liked album by even their fans but I dig it pretty good. I even like the album cover which has also been judged negatively.)
    6. New - Paul McCartney (Good album, though I don't think it's as good as everyone said it was at the time and even now. And I believe it's called "New" because it refers to new and fresh ideas and new beginnings in life. He did marry his third and still current wife around this time, so.)
    5. The Next Day - David Bowie
    4. Pure Heroine - Lorde (When even Springsteen is covering one of her songs live, possibly because he was playing New Zealand and he couldn't think of any other artists from that country to cover, you know I had to dig deep into this. And I approve! We'll see how I feel about the rest of her discography thus far.)
    3. Foreverly - Billie Joe + Norah (As in Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day and Norah Jones. I initially thought this was just gonna be the two of them doing the best of the Everly Brothers or their "greatest hits". Myself being an Everly Brothers fan since I was, like, 2 or 3 years old and much later on becoming a Green Day fan and an admirer of Norah Jones as well, I was on it 100% as soon as I heard about it. Found out it was a track-by-track cover of the Everlys' Songs Our Daddy Taught Us album, which was fine by me, and I think they did a good job with it. Bit "lush" maybe in that they had a band backing them up while the original album was just the Everlys and their acoustic guitars, but still, I dig it.)
    2. The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You - Neko Case (I think I wanna marry her voice. Or just her. And her backup singer Kelly Hogan. Ha! Neko's released a number of albums, and so far, this is the only I've heard all the way through, but MAN is it good. Speaking of MAN, that was the single off the album, and lyrically, a bit ahead of its time even though maybe that wasn't what she meant. But still, LOVE it.)
    1. You Are What You Absorb - Palmyra Delran (She was in The Friggs and Pink Slip Daddy. Not sure if any of you have heard of any of those bands, but she was in them. Ha. I THINK I heard of the Friggs but not of the other one. She's from Philadelphia, so she has something in common with Crystal. Ha. I think she still has her own radio show on the Underground Garage channel on Sirius. The album is just pure garage rock/power pop joy. Even a song called You're My Brian Jones. Considering Brian was an asshole behind the scenes, I don't think that's a good thing, but still, it's fun.)
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are a modern psychedelic/prog band that seem to crank out albums at all times and that I would've figured was "Paul-core", but oh well. Ha! Only heard a few tracks of theirs and they're good though not something I wanna really dive into at the moment.
Old Sock. Even at the time, I was like, "What? Really, Eric?"
The clip of Paul doing The Beautiful Ones at that Purple Rain show is here on RUclips courtesy of Paul himself. And I can certainly understand what Crystal meant by the women falling out of their seats. I've said here in the comments a few times that Paul is a great singer and performer, so I'm not surprised.
Yeah, true that Jimmy Carter hasn't released anything worthwhile since the 1970s. Especially since Gregg Allman died.
And now, we wade into 2014. See y'all then. ;)

Well, I think the difference between this and the "recommendations" that Crystal complains about is that those are instances where people are basically saying. "What?! You're not in THE CLUB?? What's wrong with you?!". Or you just hear about it too much before you've actually heard it to the point where you're already sick of it.
Oh and thank you for your comments re: the Prince clip. Forgot I put that up!

Sunday Damar here and I will agree what Tommy is saying about Bon Jovi...he's basically saying the same situation I have with Duran Duran with their first two albums...both of those album are great but once we get to Seven And The Ragged Tiger album, we were thinking what happened. Same with Culture Club with their first two albums...banger albums but what happened to them on their third album. But with Bon Jovi with their fourth and fifth albums Slippery When Wet and New Jersey...I get what Crystal and Paul were saying too. So with me, I'm on everyone's side because that's how I feel on the artists/bands I love like David Bowie, Prince, Duran Duran and others

Ah well, that's YT for ya. I will post my 2014 list but not sure if I will continue past that - or if it even makes sense to do so since almost no one is seeing my lists/comments these days . . .The fun part is the discussion . . .

Unfortunately I cannot make any recommendations to Crystal because these are the years that I tuned out contemporary music and went back to the vault called the 1970s. Things do get better in the current 2020s era.

I get the whole idea of "I can't put an album on a top ten list if it isn't worthy of being on a top ten list,"--really, I do, so I am in no way arguing with Crystal--but if the brief is to pick the ten best albums of the year, then that's what I'm going to do, even if I have to put some weak material on the list. I know I have put some albums on my past lists that I wouldn't recommend, but I can still say that the albums on any given top ten of mine are, as far as I'm concerned, the better albums of that year. Being a top ten album in a crappy year just means it's one of the better crappy albums that year. If I start judging albums across time, I'll only have full top tens for maybe eight or nine years...
With that being said, here are my top ten albums for 2013. I genuinely like all ten of these, but I only recommend the top four...
    10. My True Story, Aaron Neville (the down side is that it's a collection of oldies; the up side is it's AARON FUCKING NEVILLE)
    9. Now Then & Forever, Earth Wind & Fire
    8. The Blessed Unrest, Sara Bareilles
    7. Where Does This Door Go, Mayer Hawthorne
    6. Modern Vampires of the City, Vampire Weekend
    5. Shadows, Lenka
    4. Volume 3, She & Him
    3. New, Paul McCartney
    2. Didn't It Rain, Hugh Laurie
    1. Grinning Streak, Barenaked Ladies
Just to show how uneven the lists are from year to year, look at my number 1 album there. I make no apologies for being a Barenaked Ladies fan. They are good musicians and songwriters, they have strong senses of humor, and they always put on a good show. And I like Grinning Streak--I think it's one of their stronger albums. But it isn't their best album. It isn't better than Gordon, or Maybe You Should Drive, or Stunt, all of which placed at number 1 on my list in their respective years. (It isn't as good as the album they released in 2015, Silverball--spoiler alert.) In fact, I think the best BNL album was Born on a Pirate Ship from 1996, and THAT album only hit #3 on my top ten for that year. If albums had to have a minimum level of excellence to make it onto a list, then it seems logical that every #1 should be comparable to prior #1s like Pet Sounds, Pisces Aquarius Capricorn & Jones Ltd, or Abbey Road, and that just isn't going to happen very many times....

Villagers had the vinyl release Awayland in 2013, I think Crystal might like Villagers if she hasn't listened to them before. And I seriously like Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine, "White People and the Damage Done." De Staat's album I Con was first released on CD (Dutch alternative rock sung in English). But, yeah, the year was pretty dead for me as well.

What happened to Bon Jovi when grunge came out and killed all hair bands is the same thing that happened to progressive rock bands in the 70s when punk came out. Adapt or die basically and some bands like Genesis and Yes made changes to their music to keep going in the 80s.
